  1. Perhaps you should consider the top of the knots as the top of the pocket. Then the World Crest is still centered giving a pleasing appearance, basically like Mike Walton's picture. This might be bending or breaking the rules, but you can live with it, because if you've got this problem you're already a very "knotty" person. :-) I'm with Kaji, I've only got 3 now. (but 4 and 5 are getting close).
  2. I give our Scout Shop in San Diego an A-. The usually only come up short for the September COH when we need 14 of some merit badge. Then again, if we got to ordering earlier they'd be there. Otherwise they are outstanding.
  3. Yesterday, the Silverwoods were on the Roger Hedgecock show. Here is the interview to listen to. http://rogerhedgecock.com/content/blogcategory/10/26/ The entire 3 hour program was broadcast from a local hotel, where we had some of the Norman Rockwell and other Scouting art on display. It was great publicity, the phones were ringing off the hook at the council office with people who wanted to sign up their kids or volunteer them. Enjoy
  4. Just last week we held our annual council dinner. It was a great time and our 16 new Silver Beaver's were given the recognition due them. But there was a part of the dinner that was far more exciting to me. Our council had a young man, Ben Silverwood, who was awarded the Medal of Honor with Crossed Palms. That is the heroism award at great risk to own life. I suggest that you read about how he save his entire family last June as their catamaran hit a reef off the cost of Tahiti. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20060129-9999-1c29medal.html for the brief story or http://www.s
  5. Phun with a Purpose. I would ask the boys to come up with a purpose for the movie they selected. (Although almost any answer would be acceptable.)
  6. Here is what is slowly working in our unit. I arrived in the troop about 2 years ago, new to the adult side of Scouting, but from a strong youth background. Becuase I already believed in the value of it, I immediately went out and started attending training and inviting others to go. It has been a slow process, but next week the entire troop committee is going to the new Leader's Essentials and Troop Committee Training together. That's after a year of them saying, yeah maybe we should do that, which came after a year of me saying hey, there's a training event coming up I'm going if any
  7. It's done. This weekend I finished my last ticket item. Two of us from the same patrol (Owls) coincidentally finished on the same day and were the first in our WB class to finish. If you are reading this and you have not attended WB, let me be either the first person, or yet another person to tell you that it is invaluable training. The material you will learn is on par with any Fortune 500 company at a fraction of the cost. The material will help you to become not just a better Scout leader, but a better person. My wife, who is slowly joining my son and me on the Scouting trai
  8. Great information shared all around. Here is my two cents worth as a pastor who has done the classes and as a Troop Chaplain. 1. Be prepared to have a pastor who is clueless about the process. You will be doing all of the Scouts in your congregation a service by introducing him or her to the Awards. You may suggest that your pastor poll the youth to see if there are any others who would like to go through the program together. (It is more phun as a group) 2. When the final paperwork is finished, make two copies of the application that gets mailed back to PRAY (or the denominati
  9. These are great! Some were already included others will definitely be added and the rest will be great follow-ups. In the process of doing this, I have become involved with resurrecting our Council's Religious Relationship Committee. Even when this manual is compelted as a Ticket item. It will probably evolve into a more complete resource, or secondary booklet. "Back to Gilwell happy land, happy land, I'm going to work my ticket if I can."
  10. I took mine out of council last summer for a number of reasons, the greatest of which was timing. I had a great time and don't regret it. Well, I'm back to working on my ticket item. Look for my new thread in this forum and help me with one of my ticket items. Please help me on my ticket item Let's hear it for the raptors! I will always be and Eagle (Scout), but I used to be an Owl and a good old Owl too. W4-43-05
  11. Fellow Scouters I would appreciate your help. Three ticket items down, and two to go. I am creating a "How to be a Troop Chaplain" booklet. This is something that goes beyond the single page issued by national. It is not a "Scout's Own" or "Scout Worship Service" resource book. It is meant to be given to a Chaplain or prospective Chaplain who may have only a minimal amount of Scouting knowledge, and give them a running start at doing the job successfully. We have them for SM, SPL, PL, Den Chief etc., why not for the Chaplains. I would appreciate any suggestions for topics you fe
  12. I attended TDC (formerly Train the Trainer) in December last year. (Out of Council as I seem to do often, but not the same out of council where I went to Wood Badge, but I digress) I agree that it was a very good program. Like your course, this class was comprised of this council's Wood Badge staff for the coming year, and almost everyone else had their beads or was working on them... Except this one young mother of a Cub and a Webelos Scout, who was not even a registered Scouter yet. Three days prior, she had taken the position of Training Chair on their Pack Committee. The Cubmaster
  13. Our troop wears a troop design neckerchief. Most of the units in our area wear them as well.
  14. All in favor of packwife as Committee Chair, say, "aye." "AYE!" Seriously, it sounds like you are the natural person for this job. May I encourage you to contact your concil or district regarding training. There is a Leader Specific Training for the Troop Committee, which includes New Leader's Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge. It would be a great thing for you, individually or your committee as a group even better, to go through. it will answer most if not all of the questions about role in the committee and troop. Motion carries, congratulations packwife.
  15. Welcome to Jumpstart Tech support. I'll be as basic as possible just in case. I know that when I get frustrated with something I stop seeing things that should be obvious. 1. Log into the Jumpstart website 2. Go to "Brotherhood", then "challenges" ("Challenges" appears on the mustard colored bar below the Blue tool bar with "Brotherhood") 3. Click on the little note pad that says memorize on it (It's the far left one) 4. You should now be in challenge one. In challenge one is everything you need to memorize for brotherhood, the first of which is...(drum roll please)...the admonit
  16. It's coming to San Diego in October for a one week engagement in two thatres. Check out the trailers it looks hilarious. I've already put it on my calendar to see twice in the one week enagement. Has anyone seen the movie already?
  17. Congratulations! the Brotherhood ceremony is a good one. You are far more likely to remember it and understnad it than the Ordeal ceremony. So wil you be cnaging you Username to VABrotherhood? :-)
  18. Yes Vicky, Youth Venturers (17-20 years old) at Woodbadge AS STAFF! They don't get the third bead, cause they don't have the first two, they don't get the neckerchief. But they are on staff...at WB...as part of the official curriculum. -Karl

  20. Tally one more for the Owls. It seems like just yesterday I was on my course. Oh yes, it was yesterday. I used to be an Owl... W4-43-05
  21. Wilderness Wood Badge...is the only way to go. I just got back from Old Baldy Council's Week-Long Wilderness Wood Badge, the course suggested by Soupmom. It was wonderful. (I'm from San Diego-Imperial Council) We carried in everything but our water for the week. "No phones, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury." I cannot image how a weekend course could ever achieve the same results. I'm glad that more Scouters are able to get the training, but I sure want to suggest that if you can go weeklong, do it! Coincidentally, about halfway through the week, I discovere
  22. I just got back from my week at Woodbadge. We had a Gilwell Crew 1 advisor on staff and a 5 person Venturing Crew of young people 17-20 years old. They arrived Tuesday and finished the week with us. Overall their participation was a real boost to the event. I can only wonder if it will spur them on to be participants in a few years, or whether they will think they've been there, done that. I used to be an OWL...
  23. I recently attended the Troop Committee Challenge, and not two weeks later sat in our Troop Committee meeting, during which a long discussion about policy was held. I could not help but think that if this group were Trained, including NLE and TCC, the discussion would have lasted 15 minutes rather than 90. For the person who has done SM/ASM training it's mostly review, but for the average parent it's great!
