  1. Maybe one of the dads has a shop in his garage and can make the kits for you using scrap plywood or pine boards. If he pre drilled the holes the boys would just need to screw it together, lightly sand and stain or paint. When I did craftsmen I hauled all my stuff to the parking lot of the school and one adult manned each power station and guided the Webelos in using the tool. I didn't know about GTSS back then. We had the use the compound miter saw, press and electric screw driver. I did not let them use the nail gun. . We made squirrel release boxes for the conservation dept.
  2. I can see the issues with focus and resources, but isn't that a function of parental involvement ? I assume it is volunteer based like most youth sports. Making national news is a media decision. I don't know the answer to the gender in sports issue. But we have to realize there are differences. For example in swimming at the younger ages the girls can generally swim faster than the boys and if not get disqualified less often, but once the testosterone kicks in things flip. Are swim teams discriminating by dividing up the sexes ? What about the Olympics ? Most HS sports also discriminate on economic class as well. I know of one public HS swim team that requires $2k in suits. On suit is $500 and can only be used for the final championship. That's nuts.
  3. How does Little League discriminate ?
  4. Food is always a gift that gets used. No not a tin of cheese lovers popcorn. Depending on your budget, Omaha Steaks is a nice gift. Overpriced, but they are good. You can usually find deals online. A Honey Baked Ham goes over big I'm my house. Tickets to a sports game, mid he likes sports. If you really want to go all out get a Lexus with a big bow in the roof.
  5. Point taken Alex. I appoligize for my comments.
  6. Pack recall you mentioning the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster a while back, I ran across the term somewhere else recently and decided to goggle it. Wow what scream. Seems the the perfect religion for any atheist who has issues with the BSA DRP. Friday is their Holy Day so it has the added benefit of solving conflicts on campouts. Lots of craft opportunities for the Cubs as well.
  7. I am certainly not trying to be disrespectful of her faith, but I have a hard time understanding this particular situation. I taught preschool swim lessons for a year with a married Momron woman at the Y, though there was a guard present. We did however get together many times without the presence of another adult. Lunch break at a burger joint with one of her daughters during a guard class. I rented a tiller for my garden and went to her house to deliver some extra compost and cultivate her raised bed garden. I am sure I was invited in the house for a glass of water. Other occasions surely occurred were other adults were not present and maybe not our children. We never went out for drinks or anything like that. Two of her daughters babysat my boys on few occasions and I one on one drove them a few blocks back home. Maybe I have distorted liberal humor, but my view is cheaters are going to cheat. They will find a way. But a den meeting with with a bunch of small children is not one of those opportunities for temptation. Maybe I am an exception but in 19 years of marriage there has never been another woman I had a real desire to cheat with. With that standard I don't see how anyone can participate in the job market in this country.
  8. Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Go with an Eagle if you can afford it.
  9. ROFL. I am sorry christineka I know this is serious for you but I hope you can see the humor in what you wrote. A man and multiple women is fine, but not one man and one woman. How very Mormon. What is the position on two men and one woman ? LOL. How is anything inappropriate supposed to happen with 6-8 boys bouncing off the walls ?
  10. I would be pissed as well if done without my permission. I would however give my permission, what a great educational opportunity. Would probably want do do some debriefing afterwards to make sure nothing sunk in to deep.
  11. "With gay parents, you ALWAYS have at least one who is not blood related and sometimes two. It is a big difference." Except in Arkansas or the southern part my state Missouri.
  12. BD what is OWL then ? I have two trainingcertificates from that weekend BALOO and OWL -Webelos. I think OWL is just less to write with the "leader skills" left off.
  13. Most of it they can practice at home. Buy a super cheap tent to practice setting up in the dark. Knots, get the pioneering MB book. Make fire starters and char cloth. (Dryer lint, gulf wax and egg cartons are cool). Field guide from library for plant and tree identification. A fire pit from a garage sale. Sharpen his knife and the kitchen knives. Push-ups / pull-ups etc.
  14. Laundry and ironing are often overlooked. They need to be able at least iron their cap and gown.
  15. If he is 18, takes YPT, and fills out an adult application and whatever MBC application your council has it should not be a problem. In my council there is not a registration fee for a MBC. Some of us may be a little harsh, but realize the way you described the process sounds really bad.
  16. I think you know our ultimate goal is to help you do the program correctly. Many of us have contacts and experience that can help you get correct information you need. What council and district is your toop in ? Is it the Mid Tennesee Council, Trail of Tears District ? If it is one of us can contact your District Executive Ryan Vanden and see if he can get you the resources your troop needs. The web site does not appear to have an online MBC directory. That is OK as it is National Policy that information should only be available to certain unit leaders. Not all councils follow that directive, mine doesn't. Here are the relevant sections of the 2013 GTA 7.0.2.2 Web-Based Counselor Lists Online counselor lists present a number of challenges. They should only be placed on official council websites that conform to the National Council guidelines at http://www.scouting.org/Marketing/Resources/ CouncilWeb.aspx. Give attention to protecting counselor privacy. Limit access to those who have merit badge– related responsibilities, such as advancement committee members and chairs, or unit leaders and selected assistants. Scouts should not have access. Their interaction with the Scoutmaster in discussing work on a badge, and obtaining a counselor’s name, is an important part of the merit badge plan. 7.0.2.3 Unit Counselor Lists Units may establish their own lists of counselors, who may or may not opt to work with youth in other units. This may be necessary in wide geographic areas. It can also be helpful to have ready counselors for the most popular badges. Recognize, however, that Scouts learn from the perspectives of counselors outside their own troop. Note that all merit badge counselors, including those serving only one unit, must be registered and be approved by the council (or district, if authorized) advancement committee.
  17. Then if the CO will not take action immediatly RUN FAST. I have problems with my troop but nothing like this.
  18. There is 99% chance that is the best course of action. If this is the only bad apple in a otherwise good troop I would first investigate removing the cancer. I wouldn't count on it though.
  19. The place to start is with your COR. They are responsible for the selection of unit leaders. The COR can preplace the CC on the spot no questions or appeals. The Scoutmaster has no power over the CC. I suggest you detail the type of CO you have and the relationship your troop has with the IH and COR.
  20. I am not a fan of excessive video game time but I have to ask. 8 beans for reading how much of the New Testament? Surely not whole book ? 4 hours of piano buys 30 minutes of video ? Beans or cash, pretty much the same thing. Work is being monetized. It may be effective, just rubs me the wrong way at that age. Btw. Deodorant or anti-perspirent ? Coercing someone to use artificial scents seems a little harsh. Young noses can be very sensitive. If perspiration is the problem that is another story.
  21. "If youth leadership can sign off on rank requirements what is wrong with merit badges?" Lets be clear here. You have indicated you were signing off on MB requirements.
  22. Why doesn't that work ? Women and men work together all the time in this country. This isn't Saudi Arabia. Please tell me this isn't a "binders full of women" issue.
