  1. I thought people can give gifts up to $10,000 tax free to any individual. I would assume that legally the Scout troop is considered to be an individual. And what about Eagle Scouts receiving monetary donations for their projects? I know they are supposed to have a fundraising plan, but can they accept donations? Gifts of material from a lumber yard would seem to be similar to cash.
  2. My comment was meant to be respectful as I too believe in wearing the full uniform or not at all. Excellent suggestions for promoting this. Thanks.
  3. Bob, I for one appreciate your explanation of the rules of Scouting and have yet to find a significant disagreement when it is fully explained. However, there are many aspects of Scouting that are subject to interpretation. When the requirement says "make a satisfactory effort" and the SM says it can only be made by holding a POR in the troop, well that is his opinion of a satisfactory effort. There are many other examples where the Scouter's interpretation is quite different than what your explanation is. With close to 5000 posts and 30 years of experience, your opinions engender signi
  4. At a recent Camporee, the Sunday morning assembly was running late. After announcements, the religious service began without any oppportunity for dismissal or break. An Evangelical Christian minister was brought in to conduct the service. Needless to say, it was quite offensive when he told a significant number of the Scouts and adults that they were going to Hell if they had not accepted Christ. I don't care if you feel this to be the TRUTH, it may not be your neighbor's truth. The youth leader and adult advisor of the event had a number of apologies to make at the event review.
  5. Rooster, It is a volunteer organization. If the person leading the event or public prayer wants it to be Christian, (or Hari Krishna or whatever) it is their prerogative to do so. But, they should respect the beliefs of others (as is REQUIRED by the 12th point of the Scout Law) and allow for other forms of expression, if desired. If no one wants to have an additional expression of faith, so be it. If they want to not participate in your prayer because it offends them, they can not participate. But, to not allow for these alternatives is the problem that the religious members of BSA do n
  6. "The only thing that has allowed this practice to continue is that no scout in the unit has been aware that he has the right to appeal. It's not that the unit is right, it's that they have never been caught." Actually, no Scout has ever been denied advancement because of the uniform issue. Also, no Scout has appeared before a Board of Review out of full field uniform since I have been with this troop.
  7. In reviewing the entire thread, I must conclude that Bob White is, again, correct in his interpretation of the rules. I would be willing to bet (having never met Bob) that he is ALWAYS in a full field uniform, when appropriate, as described in the BSHB. I would also bet that the troop he is involved with is a Full Uniform Troop. Train them, Trust them, let them lead... So how do you get a troop that is not "full uniform" to wear it if it is not required somewhere along the line?
  8. "Wear full uniform for all ceremonies and indoor activities, such as troop meetings, courts of honor and most other functions. The uniform should also be worn during special outdoor occasions, such as Scout shows, flag ceremonies and special times at summer camp" The BSHB also says "like the Scout badge, the uniform is an emblem of Scouting." It also says "Scout spirit refers to the effort you make to live up to the ideals of Scouting." I think the troop decided that wearing the uniform is a demonstration of effort. IF the troop considers wearing the uniform to be an example of Scout S
  9. The unit cannot solicit donations. But, can an individual make a non-solicited donation to the unit for a specific cause? A troop needed a new trailer for camp supply transport. Why couldn't someone donate to the unit for the specific purpose of getting the trailer? Or could someone donate the trailer itself?
  10. 2CD Why bother? What good is University when you are already brainwashed.
  11. Hey Unc, I kinda thought you might be talking to me too. I recently called someone an idiot. I'll keep a finger on that backspace button. Good advice. Thanks.
  12. In our troop, wearing the Scout uniform is considered an example of Scout Spirit. The Scout who does not wear the uniform can legitimately be faulted for not showing Scout Spirit. The Scoutmaster can consider this with each rank advancement.
  13. ps Congratulations. You made Senior Forum Member in 21 days.
  14. I never thought I would do it. I will ignore this user Jason OK
  15. My son went to the New River at Powhatan last year and really enjoyed it even though it rained every day. There are other programs there, They have a website at http://www.bsa-brmc.org/camp/k
  16. Hitler, Idi Amin, David Koresh and Jim Jones... These men personify the anti-Christ. As you can see from the responses, many have respect for the ACLU as it takes on unpopular legal battles, whether we agree with the specific issue or not. The opening of this thread suggests that if we respect the ACLU then we respect the Anti Christ. And you wonder why you yourself do not receive respect? As I and others have suggested, Jason, you should stick to Scouting issues. You clearly can use the help.
  17. When asked "what would you add to the Scout Law if there were 13 points?" the Eagle candidate replied "acceptance". Another replied "tolerance". This has always been one of my favorite questions to ask the Eagle candidate. Maybe they don't see enough of it in our society. I see the problem as a severe interconnection of religion and politics. And the politics comes from the Savage Nation and Rush Limbaugh. SRBeaver said it very well. The beneficiaries of the ACLU are the same members of society that Jesus would have tried to help. Love your enemies and turn the other cheek. It is
  18. I am a new Crew Advisor and just finished Venturer Specific Leadership Training. Our Crew is small- only 5 active young men. It is their's to direct with my assistance. If they don't want to meet, they don't. If they want to do something, I help them find a way to make it happen. I have told them that if they complete requirements, they will get credit for advancement whether they are interested in it or not. I continue to encourage it and I hope we will see advancement with time.
  19. Bob White says it well. And very clearly. Also, uniform inspections are required twice yearly for Quality Unit recognition. The troop can require uniforms at meetings. This is not adding to the advancement requirements. The Board of Review is held after the requirements are complete. An Eagle Board of Review in our district would be halted if the Scout were not in full "field" uniform (thanks Bob). Again, Scouts that appear in "mixed" uniforms with blue jeans, etc. look silly to most of us who are always in full uniforms
  20. A scout is courteous. A scout is kind. A scout is friendly. I am sorry, but I really can't help myself. JasonOK- you are an idiot. You continue to define yourself as such with each post. The ACLU provides balance in a country that is tipping. They have to fight their battles in court and if they cannot support their arguments, they lose. Satan could not have chosen better than to have you on his side. My advice to you: Try sticking to Scouting questions.
  21. My religious view are irrelevant to this thread and to BSA. You really can't tell if I am Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu by my posts. BSA supports duty to God of any type. It is personal and private. The religious fanatics that are writing here validate my points with each and every post. Arguing over the English translation of the Bible is not what this thread is about is it Hunt? I feel sorry for the Scouts that are exposed to the intolerant ideology (and bigotry) expressed by these fanatics.
  22. NeiLup More importantly, many Vietnam War supporters felt that if you did NOT support the war, that you were not supporting your country. This same argument is being made today by those in favor of the Iraq War. Few disagree with going after the Taliban and Al quaida in Afghanisan. But valid disagreement exists for persuing the war in Iraq. Some are now saying that being against the war in Iraq means you are giving solace to the enemy and failing to do duty to country. The greatness of this country is that it allows dissent. Dissenters are also patriots, in that they are willing to sta
  23. Hunt, the voice of reason strikes again.
  24. Let's see... Northern Ireland- Christians killing Christians in the name of Christ. Bosnia-Serbia- Christians killing Muslims in the name of Christ. Nazi Germany- Christians killing Jews in the name of Christ (don't protest, they were described Christians). And so on....
  25. Jason OK First, Rocky was a work of fiction. Second, BSA did stand up and was supported by the "liberal" judges when they won the right to define the program with regards to atheism and homosexuality. Third, you sure seem angry.
