  1. Cooking seems to bring out the best and worst in a team.

Let us know how it goes.

Just don''t add a small paddle in a canoe to the trip....oh wait, that was another post.

Keep up the good work Joe.

  2. one word: Barilla Tortelloni. well that''s two words.

Boil it up. heat Spagetti suace and light a candle. Find a violin player and you are eating some very good Italian food. 4 servings weigh 1/2 lb.

Went 44 miles in the ''dacks and had that the second night.

John why would you lash the D.O. to the thwart in case of a tip over? If there is no portage we bring the DO. There''s a loop in the lid and a bail. I can smell the apple pie now.

  3. In World War 1 the French used to kill one soldier in a failed unit "Pour les autres", which even though I failed French meant "for the others".

Well you can''t do that and the French also found out it didn''t work.

What you can do it talk to them and set up rules that they want. You can also explain to them that there are many good things in the Bear book and unless they stop acting like overstuffed, never scolded, undisciplined, privileged young American boys that they will not have a den.

I used to sit my kids on the floor in silence and they hated it. They thought it was a waste of time. I had to do that three times, then only threaten to do it.

The other thing you can do is make the parents attend. These little brats are the product of their parents. Make the parents attend until you get some semblance of order.

I also used to make them run around the meeting building to "run the satan out of them", sometimes it worked.

  4. Eammon had a post on this awhile back. His son asked for one for a gift.

Owning three "Creighton''s" I can attest to their look and feel when wearing them.

The Marine Corps did not expect me to carry an armload of wood when wearing one.

The standard shirt serves us "OK" I''m sticking with that.

  5. Again,

Some are assuming Joe was unsafe

needed but did not have a LTP

    Why?

Why can''t we figure he was within the guidelins set forth by S.A. and G2SS?

Was he also running with scissors?

    Petting strange dogs?

    Drinking from a garden hose?

    Crossing against the light?

  6. I''d say the SM has your lads welfare and well being on his mind. He may be adding something,I don''t think so, he is asking your son to exhibit practical knowledge.

    Pick your battles.

If not, your son, the SM and you are going to have a great couple of years together.

Getting signed off isn''t what this is all about. Keeping your son safe from a potentially painful problem is. The SM went out of his way to cut some samples, you are worried about getting singed off. The "hours" would be well spent. Ever had to take steroids so that you could open your Ivy swollen right eye? I have. Get the oil on your hands, need to relieve yourself????, got the oil and a rash where the sun doesn''t shine to dry your blisters. More steroids.

As far as the SM teaching maybe some of the older boys aren''t worth learning from. Do you really want the bad ones teaching your son to avoid a bad spot?

    Think about it?

  7. Why are we assuming Mac Doaks did something unsafe.

Safety Aloat( Already have it, I assume) and a float plan(2 maybe 5 minutes to write and make a copy) and he''s off to the races.

The topic was about Whineymommy moaning that her son missed some fun.

If any of those included thought it was inconsiderate to do a spur of the moment activity they could just say "No , thank you."

  8. Why has nobody mentioned the DE''s role in this?

Use the UC(if he exists), and the COR and the DE.

In the testosterone based world you are in the brain sometimes does not get top billing in the thought process. At least it did not always at Camp Lejeune in 1981.

You folks are very procedure oriented. All those orders that get written are to insure everyone''s job/billet and responsibilities get explained and outlined.

Figuring this guy to be an Army SNCO he should know what a chain of command is. He is not in a Cub Den''s chain of command. Generals do not command squads. This guy must be told to stick to his own knitting

  9. With tremendous predjudice I agree with Mr. Eisely. Semper Fi!

    Don't forget the National Archives.

Nobody mentioned the Tomb of the Unknown at Arlington.

The Spy Museum is OK if you prep them about how the US and Soviets were in the post war years. (Tough for them to grasp)

Go to Arlington House and hear about General Lee's decision in the Civil War and subsequent siezing of his home and then payment to future a generation.

Ford's Theatre and the House across the street.

Across the street from the White House there is an interpretive center that is almost as good as the White house.

The Postal Museum is good for Kids and big Kids. The History of the Postal Service was interesting for my Son at 11.

Skip the National Aquarium ---Sea World is much better.

As far as the Marine Barracks Eigth and I. Look it up on the net and call them. I am sure with enough notice they will get you Tickets. The Silent Drill Team is a must see.

Prepare the boys for lots of walking and I might even bend the game boy rule to allow that while waiting in line at some places depending on if you go during a school break or for summer.

Just remember (in the North at least ) history is not as exciting as it used to be for kids. I would suppose that History is more important in the South. That's one of the things I admire about the South.

  10. We did :

Wash DC:Did it in a weekend stayed at Scout loop at Greenbelt National Park. Boys had fun but it was a 3 day weekend and the drive was far for just 3 days.

    Gettysburg

Stayed at Camp Conewago BSA camp. Did Hershey on the same weekend.

    Good time.

    Boston:

Stayed at Camp Sayre. Good time, saw and walked around on USS Constitution. Ironsides Museum is great. Boston Aquarium. The Museum of Science is supposed to be great. Freedom Trail. You could easily spend a week there. Battleship cove is about 45 minutes away. Sayre has an indoor pool so's y'all can come in February break if you want to.

All three places have lodging for a minimal charge.

Watch out the folks in Boston talk funnier than y'all do. (just Kidding)

  11. Check out Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains.

They have 50 milers in some very nice country. Fly into Albany NY. Our Mountains are about twice as large as yours are.

I've been to Alabama. It was pretty, hot, and the people were very respectful. Nice place. But I can see how boys need a change once in awhile.

Wakpominee will let you split the Troop. Some kids H.A. some boys traditional camp. The guides are BSA, so you will keep your money "within the family". One adult is required for H.A. treks the other being the Voyageur. The other adults could stay with the younger Scouts for a conventional camp experience.

FT Ticonderoga is about 20 miles away, it and the surrounding area look pretty much the same as when Gen. Knox took the cannon to Boston. Ft. William Henry has had a small town grow up around it but still neat to see.

Saratoga the turning piont of the Revolution is about 20 miles away

    go to wakpominee.org

  12. I agree with Avid. Not end up in the news, not hurt a boy, not have any person in my community be able to piont to an incident and say SEEE, look at what they did. Most important not hurt a boy.

I see all these kids getting hurt in the news. I'm sure their leaders were avg. guys trying to work a good program, what is it they have in common?

    -they violated something obvious?(Fire, SSD,G2SS,SA,)

-they left the kids alone for a moment or two?

-they knew a kid needed extra attention(the NC kid who was lost for 4 days comes to mind)and let their guard down.

-Maybe the most important, they pressed their unit beyond it's capabilities?

The answer from some bean counter at National would help.
