Sender, Quixote is correct. The book needs to be signed by the WL, Assistant or designated person. On badges such as aquanut I've accepted the signature of a swim instructor or life guard. You stated that you didn't want a small group of boys getting badges the others don't. My thoughts as a Webelos Leader is that I want my Scouts to work on activities at home with their parents or at school with their teacher. I test the Scout on what he has worked on and if he meets the requirements to the satisfaction of the leadership we sign off. I had one Scout earn his Showman Badge by working with his band teacher at school who signed off on his book. The Webelos program is a transition program between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. I try to get the Scouts to start taking the initiative and work on their own. Good Luck Paul

Please keep us posted. Unfortunately we all need to be reminded about predators. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Paul -
Our Troop will be reseeding several large areas at our primary reservation. Everything except the labor has been donated.

can someone be a cubmaster and scoutmaster
ScouterPaul replied to pack51's topic in Open Discussion - Program
pack51 I don't know of any regulations that would prohibit a person from serving as both a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster. I am currently the Cubmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster. -
le Voyageur Welcome back! I've missed your expertise.

Backpacking 103 "My dogs are barking!"
ScouterPaul replied to Mike Long's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Thanks Mike -
Bob White I understand the new patrol method. I have a question on leadership. Let's say you have 6 boys in the patrol and rotate patrol leader every 2 months. Here is the question do you let the boys vote every time or do you rotate through the 6 boys. It would be possible the boys could vote the same Scout as leader multiple times. Do you put limits on the number of times a boy could be leader the first year? Do you have any advice? Thanks
-
Thanks Bob White Your answer is exactly what I thought it would be. Bottom line is that we give the boys every chance to make the correct decision using our coaching and other skills to hopefully get them there. But in the end if all else fails we must step. ONLY IF ALL ELSE FAILS!

Bob I'm experienced in Cub Scouts new to Boy Scouts as a leader. This is a good what if question. What if the movie made it to the outing and what if the SPL said is was ok for the Scouts to view it. Would you step in or would you let the Scouts live by their decision. I realize that if we have done our jobs correctly then this wouldn't happen but what if? My Scouts are all 11 years old, we have a new Troop with no older boys. Paul

Can you be on two committees?
ScouterPaul replied to featherswillfly's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Your are right on the money Tim. We all wear many hats. Unfortunately we can only be registered and recoginized in one formal leadership role per unit. -
Bump to FScouter I think all of us who post on this forum do so because we take our Scouting roles seriously. I know that I make a mistake of some sort every day of my life. I'm here to learn and share and hopefully make the scouting program that I offer better.

What is Woodbadge?
ScouterPaul replied to featherswillfly's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
My course cost $195.00. This covered all course materials, food ect. I did not have to buy anything special. The only requirement was a complete uniform. Shirt, pants or shorts, socks, belt and baseball type scout hat. I had all this so I didn't have to buy anthing. We were provided with a course t-shirt, hat and neckerchef. -
What is Woodbadge?
ScouterPaul replied to featherswillfly's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
featherswillfly I'm in the middle of my Wood Badge training. I can't speak for what Wood Badge was before they revamped it (Wood Badge for the 21st Century). Our course covers two 3 day weekends Friday morning to Sunday evening. The first weekend was primarly indoors with the emphasis on leadership training and team building instruction. We spent a coniderable amount of time learning about how to turn a patrol into a high performing team. We were divided into Patrols , I am an Owl, and we did everything together as a patrol. We each will take a turn as Patrol Leader and will lead our Patrol for the day. This includes attending a PLC meeting and being responsible for everything our patrol does for the day. It is an intensive experience with everything directed to teaching the leaders how to instill leadership and team building skills into ourselves and our Scouts. We also covered project planning in detail and each patrol chose a scout related project to develop and present during the second weekend. My patrol has met once and will meet again before the next weekend. These meetings are run just like a Patrol Meeting would. The second weekend will be totally outdoors. I haven't been to this part yet so I can't tell you much. I do know that we will live the patrol method, camping, cooking ect. We will do a conservation project during the weekend. Our project will be run by the Camp Ranger. Wood Badge so far has been everything I was told it would be. I would strongly recommend you to take it. The energy of being around 70 committed adult leaders (40 participants and 30 staff) is truly inspiring. It is my understanding that you don't need to be invited to attend Wood Badge. It is open to all registerd adult leaders, Cub Scout, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts and Varsity Scouts. The only requirement is that the leader must have taken all training that is requried for their position. This would include fast start, NLE, and the Job Specific training for your position. Wood Badge is open to everyone. Oh yeah. You wil need to write a ticket which is basically a pledge with yourself to fullfill specific goals related to Scouting. You will have 18 months to complete your before you have completed the course and receive your beads. Sorry about the length (could keep on going) but I've been invigorated by my experience so far. -
Can you be on two committees?
ScouterPaul replied to featherswillfly's topic in Open Discussion - Program
featherswillfly It's my understanding that the only person who can hold two positions within a unit is the COR. That is within the same unit. Pack's and Troop's are seperate units, they may be charted by the same organization but there are two distinct charters. I am the Cubmaster of our Pack and an Assistant Scoutmaster of the Troop. I'm also working on getting some cross pollination (spelling?) on the two committees. I want a Committee member from the Pack to serve on the Committee of the Troop who doesn't have a son in the Troop and I want a Troop Committee member to serve on the Pack committee who doesn't have a son in the pack. -
featherswillfly I'm from Lousville, KY myself.

Backpacking 103 "My dogs are barking!"
ScouterPaul replied to Mike Long's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Mike What's your opinion on tread and the effect on trails? We're planning on taking our Scouts, 8 boys all 11 years old, to The Great Smokey Moutain National Park. We would like to take a couple of day hikes on the AT. Can you recommend any particular section of the park? -
Where do I start. I am a Cubmaster and an Assistant Scoutmaster. I fall into the leave no boy behind school. Our Pack and Troop has a number of boys who come from single parent homes. They have little or no male adult role models except for those in Scouting. Like Rooster I am also in Scouting for my two younger sons. However I have a strong desire to make people feel wanted and accepted. Scouting provides this to me. My method of recruiting new leaders is simple. I look for parents who are there each week and then I get them to do something small. Once they have done something small they realize that it didn't hurt and are willing to take on a larger role. I call this my fishing technique. Once the hook is set they are mine. It's also my opinion that most parents, especially the younger ones, are scared. Nobody in my pack fails I try to coach and recognize everyone.

DD - I'm afraid to disappoint you but I'm going to take the high road and not get into a spitting contest with you. Like Bob White let me apologize to grekonsz and his family. I know he will make the right decison.

Hey Mike When are we going to get back to backpacking. I miss your posts. I know this isn't part of this thread but I had to ask.
-
Well good golly I lasted a whole 3 1/2 days. I promised myself, after 3 great days in Wood Badge Training, that I wouldn't get involved in these discussions. But here I am. Why are we getting so far away from the point of this thread. There was valuable advice, yours included DD, at the beginning. Dedicated Dad why do you persist in bring up women's undergarments and clothing. It is not a logical part of this discussion. But you did bring it up. I assume that you hold the military in high esteem. I know if I'm wrong you will tell me. Would you kick a Navy Seal or any other member of a special forces unit out of the military for wearing women's clothing? Talk with a couple of them and ask about their use of panty hose. I think their answers might enlighten you. Bottom line is that nobody can add to the rank requirements that includes a SM, COR or any other leader. If you are saying that a Scout with long hair is not showing Scout Spirit then perhaps you need to review CHARACTER. Character is what a person is not what he looks like. This Scout sounds like he is a credit to his Troop, Family and community and I wish him continued success in his life.
-
Well here is my 2 cents worth on this matter. If you look at the BSA Adult Application your will see that the Signature of both the COR and CC are required for all leaders. This includes the Scoutmaster. This clearly indicates to me that the SM is fourth in line.

Forgot this one. Under the Our Pledge OF Performance section number 17. it states: We will notify, in case of serious trouble, our local council service cneter, our parents, or other local contact.
