  1. I think the inner tubes would be perfect. They are lighter than tires, but they are bulky enough that it would take a couple people to lift them in a stack. Plus, if 3 or 4 inner tubes fall on you it won't hurt very much, also tires have a tendency to make you very dirty and they stain clothes.Rebar, or some wood poles of some sort would be just fine. I would suggest using one of the three pole versions rather than the two pole one. They just take a little bit more thought.
  2. Boomer, I don't know of anybody who ever uses the showers after gym class. I have seen the showers, there is a big column in the middle of the room with shower heads and partial curtains sticking off of it. Somebody mentioned towel hampers, I have not seen any sign of those anywhere. Somebody else mentioned that there isn't enough time to take a shower, that is true too. We have a 50 minute period, they let us go change with 5-10 minutes left in class. Take into account 5 minutes or so for attendance and you only have a 35 minute PE class. As to what is done in place of showers
  3. I can see why the CC might want to pre-approve the reports. Maybe he is tired of hearing "we went camping and it was fun". On the other hand I don't see why he should need an entire month to do this. A lot can happen in a month. I think the SPL should say to the CC that he thinks it might be better to give him the report a week in advance because then it will be filled with more up to date information. I am betting that somewhere along the line the committee decided that it would be good to hear directly from the youth what they think of the program. I'll bet it makes everyone on the comm
  4. Moosetracker, you are most definitely right here. He should have called whoever he needed to call and say "Hey, I've got a group assignment that I have to do so I won't be at the meeting tonight." That being said, I can tell you that his lab partner will provide much more stimulation to not do this again than you will. It isn't the most scout like action, but I am not above making partners in group projects feel really guilty that they didn't help with the project. That is a lot more incentive to do the work next time than you can ever provide.
  5. This may just be my Calfornia mindset talking, but there is a lot of individually packaged things on that menu. There is going to be a lot of trash created here. They have five different days of some form of granola bar. On the Jamboree site they say that they are expecting 43,000 people there. That means that there will be 215,000 granola bar rappers if everyone gets just one. Those aren't recyclable. I know we have to eat while there, but that is a lot of trash.
  6. "If the US flag touches the ground, you HAVE to burn it" It is really good for Sea Scouts, and boaters in general, that this isn't true. The number of times I have dropped the flag, or seen someone drop the flag because the deck was moving, well lets just say that the flag making companies would be really happy if all of those flags had been burned.
  7. "the only way the boys will stop is if enough girls tell them that Axe stinks and that girls won't get within 20 feet of a guy drenched in it." First let me say I never use that stuff. I can't stand it's smell. Now, in my old ship the girls there specifically said that they liked the axe smell as long as it wasn't completely overwhelming.
  8. I just spent 45 minutes digging around on the Seascout-net listserv that is on seascout.org and found out that a couple months ago people were asking the same question there. The link is below, but if you don't want to read through it I'll summarize. There will be no changes to the Sea Scout uniform in the next edition of the manual which is supposed be coming out in may. Apparently the Navy is changing their uniform and some people thought that the sea scouts might be changing their uniform to match. http://listserv.seascout.org/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1001&L=seascout-net&T=0&
  9. She mentioned this after she had a meeting with the council commodore. Maybe he heard that something will be changed in the new manual and she misheard him, or he misheard someone else, or maybe I missed something. That is always a good possibility.
  10. I just got off the phone with my skipper, she said that she heard that there were some changes made recently to the Sea Scout uniform. She doesn't remember when the changes happened, or what they were. I was just wondering if any of you had heard anything about this. I cannot find any mention of this on the internet, so this may just be a rumor that she picked up.
  11. "1) Scout knew assignment was due. 2) Scout knew that assignment could not be completed on time if he went on campout. " How long had he know that the assignment was due? If he only found out about it that friday afternoon then that is one thing, but if he knew that the teacher would be assigning a large project for the weekend anytime before lunch that day he should have either gotten on his cell phone during lunch and called his PL, or SM, or you and let everyone know that he wasn't going to be able to make it. As to your second point, that does change things a bit. If I did t
  12. I took that quote from the 2004 printing of the manual.
  13. emb021 said "not to mention all the First Class Anchors on the collar and hat" emb021, actually you are not supposed to have any insignia on the white hat at all. I quote from page 107, last paragraph of the Sea Scout Manual: "Navy-style white enlisted cover (hat)(no insignia on cover and identical cover for male and female);" On the next page, second paragraph it states: "The cover is white (no insignia) and the same as for the white uniform."(This message has been edited by sailingpj)
  14. I have one question here, you said that the assignment being late dropped his grade one letter grade. Now was that one grade for the assignment, or was it his entire grade for the class? I know plenty of teachers that drop the grade you get on an assignment by one letter for every day it is late, I think that that is reasonable. However if the teacher assigned an assignment that made up such a large portion of the cumulative grade for the class and only gave three days to work on it then you should be able to lodge a complaint with the school. I have had some hard teachers, but none that
  15. Lisabob, so you are a college professor. You must be one of the ones who has a good rating on ratemyprofessor.com. Mine tend to arrive just as class is supposed to start. Actually my chemistry teacher usually doesn't get there until after everyone else. Mind you this class starts at 2pm, so everyone has already been awake for at least a few hours.
  16. "My personal opinion as a father with two sons taken/taking advanced high school classes: expected hours to be put into homework outside of school has gotten excessive. Some teachers of these classes give out many of these 'surprise' assignments which adversely impact extra-curricular activities." That is exactly the problem in High Schools today. That is one of the reasons that I started taking collage classes early. I had a teacher who would assign 2-3 hours of homework every night. That was just one class, and it wasn't even my honors class. Very often in my freshman year I would come
  17. Getting to bed late shouldn't cause a problem with oversleeping at all. In my old ship we had night watch for at least an hour a night every night, and the entire ship was frequently up till 11 or 12, later at some events. In my current ship we just went to a regatta this past weekend, there was a bunch of us up until 12, 1 am, some even later. When I went to bed at 0045 there was a group of adults still up chatting on the docks. I managed to get up at 0530, and everyone else got up between then and 0645 no problem.
  18. Only in San Francisco would you have the problem of people not being gay enough to play softball.
  19. Now, I am on the Sea Scouting side of things so I am not completely sure how it all works in Boy Scouts, but I don't see any reason that what you say shouldn't be possible. As long as a really good job is done then it should be fine. The link below is goes to a place where you can download Bowditch, otherwise known as The American Practical Navigator. While this book focuses on sea going navigation there are several chapters that can be used by people navigating on land. http://pollux.nss.nima.mil/pubs/pubs_j_apn_sections.html?rid=187
  20. That's awesome, if only the Sea Scouts were doing as well. I think a thorough look through of the Sea Scout program would do wonders for it, especially the manual.
  21. The Problem with Dihydrogen monoxide as my chemistry teacher would tell you is that you do not use prefixes for the first word, only for the second word. But, just to see how many people get it I created a facebook group for this. Just search "BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE!".(This message has been edited by sailingpj)
  22. I like that they are allowing 13 year olds in. In my old ship we had a bunch of 13 year old freshmen that kept visiting only to be told that while they could come to our meetings they couldn't take part in all the really fun stuff for another 2-5 months. That was very discouraging to some people.
  23. I'm going to have to say it is either a snail or a football helmet. Though seeing as this is the pets merit badge it must be a snail, I don't know of anyone who has a pet helmet.
