Scouting and Eagle on Applications
sailingpj replied to Engineer61's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Quartermaster is supposed to also get E-2 or E-3. -
First off, welcome to the forum. Second, GO BEARS!!!!!!

You guys just reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Michael. John Travolta plays the Archangel Michael, he makes a few people lives better and along the way stops to see some landmarks such as the worlds largest ball of string.

Scouting and Eagle on Applications
sailingpj replied to Engineer61's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I marked the BSA and SPL boxes then explained in the noes section that the Sea Scouts are one of the programs run by the BSA. I also explained that a Boatswain is equivalent to an SPL. I even included a short description of the responsibilities of a Boatswain. I was surprised not to see Quartermaster there, but I won't earn it in time for me to put it on that application anyway. Probably. Board of Review for Ordinary? That is new to me, I saw that it is in the SSM, but none of the three ships I have been a part of actually do that. Nor do they do a Skipper's conference. -
Scouting and Eagle on Applications
sailingpj replied to Engineer61's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The NROTC application does have a place where you mark if you were part of the BSA. They also have a place where you mark if you were an SPL, or an Eagle. However they do not have any spots for you to mark if you are part of Venturing or Sea Scouts, and there is no place for Quartermaster or Boatswain. -
Obama refuses to sign Eagle certificates
sailingpj replied to GernBlansten's topic in Issues & Politics
I just have to ask. "and suggest that both Jimmy Carter, who is the only President to also have been a Scoutmaster, and Gerald Ford, the first President to earn Eagle Scout" Is that a prediction that we while we may have future presidents who earned eagle, we will never have a president who was a scoutmaster again? -
Heard any good jokes lately?
sailingpj replied to SemperParatus's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I just came across this one. A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man below says, "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees North latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees West longitude." "You must be an engineer," says the balloonist. "I am," replies the man. "How did yo -
Alternate swim requirements for 2nd & 1st Class
sailingpj replied to JerseyScout's topic in Advancement Resources
Just a thought, I was at the pool earlier this evening and I remembered this thread, I tried swimming with only one half my body. It took a couple laps, but I was able to do the backstroke with one arm and the same leg. It was extremely tiring, but it is possible. You may want to suggest that he work at it, I know that I would get a lot more satisfaction out of overcoming a challenge without an alternate requirement. He has to complete the other requirements first, so maybe suggest he spend an hour a week, while he is doing the other requirements, in the pool. If at when he is done with t -
OMG, OGE, that like totally sounds AWESOME.

Maybe I was just laying in it wrong, or maybe I am too tall for that specific hammock. I have never done any hammocking before, so I don't have anything to compare to.
-
They had the Hennessey Hammocks in the LNT area of the Jamboree. I tried one, but didn't find it very comfortable. It was just weird having my feet and head more than a foot above my middle.

I like how popular Sea Scout regattas are.

Is a woogle the same as turkshead knot?
sailingpj replied to oldisnewagain1's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I've seen what you are describing a couple times, it always looks good. I can see turksheads side by side taking a while. -

sailingpj replied to oldisnewagain1's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I won't be old enough to go to wood babge for a year or two, so I don't really know what one of those looks like. That was huge, no wonder it took so long. Unless you plan on protecting the knot from the elements I would not use manila, it has a tendency to rot, and when that happens it really doesn't smell good. -
On the Sea Scout end there is also Rendezvous.

Is a woogle the same as turkshead knot?
sailingpj replied to oldisnewagain1's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
What you have to do then is varnish the knot itself. I was building this sailing dink, and decided to go old fashioned with everything (the ends of the spars are even painted white), so I threw a turkshead onto the oar so that the oarlock couldn't slide off the handle. Then I soaked the oar in thickened epoxy and varnished it. Just a few hours work (minus drying times), and the oar is now water resistant, and the turkshead is not going to be coming off anytime soon. Just a suggestion for a walking stick, you probably don't want that to get water damaged either. I was given these knif -

Actually jblake47, a turkshead is not used for that purpose very often. Normally one would use something like French Wipping, or Cockscombing (ringbolt hitching). http://www.marinews.com/French-Whipping-532.php http://www.marinews.com/Ringbolt-Hitching-678.php -
Chocolate covered espresso beans are the greatest, though chocolate covered bacon is very good too. As for coffee, I have one of those stove top espresso makers (I am to tired to go downstairs to see what kind). It is really easy to use, just put the water in the bottom, the coarsely ground beans in the little tray thing ant turn on the heat. 5-10 minutes later whip up some milk and presto, triple shot cappuccino. That is at home of course, when my ship goes cruising I have a single serve french press. I bring my own beans because they are way better than the preground Folders stuff that

Yes, they are selling the whole set of patch of the days for $50 on the restricted site. -
I am pretty good with excel, if nobody already has one to give you I can certainly put something together for you. Just let me know what all you want it to show and calculate.

Jamboree Merchandise at the Scout Shop
sailingpj replied to Bando's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
That page has different stuff than the other page. The other page had different stuff. It had a belt, a belt buckle, a couple shirts, and one or two other things. They were letting you order stuff, but it all seemed to be back ordered and wasn't going to ship until January. -
Jamboree Merchandise at the Scout Shop
sailingpj replied to Bando's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
I was going to get a belt from the website, but when I went back to buy it the page was gone. Apparently they took it down the day after they posted it. This was the page that you had to have a jambo registration number to see, not the new collectibles one.
