NAIL IN THE FENCE Make sure you read all the way down to the last sentence! ) There once was a little girl who had a bad temper. Her mother gave her a bag of nails and told her that every time she lost her temper, she must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the girl had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as she learned to control her anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. She discovered it was easier to hold her temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the girl didn't l

To influence any group you must get in a leadership/policy making position, to do this in Boy Scouts you sponsor units. If any group that disagrees with the current policies had been forming units instead of leaving, policy would be different.

I never go camping without my........
berkshirescouter replied to yarrow's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My Chess Set. We just got back from Summer camp there was always a game going. We only had nine boys this year the rest are going to Philmont. -
I have said this before; There is local option now, it is the definition of avowed. It appears to range from one other person knows to name in the paper. The sleeping dog is starting to wake up. I have started to see several comments in press and current books stating 'leave the boys alone, enough already' while still giving lip service to the Gay lobby. Keep up the good work. The boys are the reason we are here.

Today we did an orenteering, and guide to safe hiking for some very new scouts. After going over S.T.O.P. one scout was asked what it stood for. He quickly answered Stop Think Observe Panic!

What causes racial hatred: racists or racial friction?
berkshirescouter replied to JosephMorgan's topic in Issues & Politics
Great Topic. Racial friction, for want of a better term, is part of the world. Why, who knows. We will not be able to wipe it out but maybe deal with it. How is the question. Forced separation does not work, look at Jim Crow laws and South Africa. King said it best you deal with each person by the content of their character. Scout oath and law sets a standard for this. Remember a TV ad that Scout National did many years ago where a white person saw some black teenagers walking up behind him and he/she was scared. The boys all were scouts. The person then relaxed. He knew they had ch -

Letter From Scout Camp ----------------- Dear Mom & Dad: We are having a great time here at Lake Typhoid. Scoutmaster Webb is making us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad's mother and tell her he is OK. He can't write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search & rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would hav

The local option on gay membership in BSA
berkshirescouter replied to eisely's topic in Issues & Politics
TJ Your example (which is Germany in the 30's) occurs in both cases. The Sea Scouts in Berkley are being forced out by a change in the local Laws. I don't think Scouts have changed, society has changed. I read BSAs policy as that the discussion of any type of sexuality in public does not make you a good role model. Would Dr. Ruth be allowed to be a leader? Avowed is the key. I would not be surprised if there are gay leaders, those who are nudists, who drink or gamble in the BSA. If they keep their comments and behavior to themselves who cares, if everything else is ok. -
I think this PCing of the United Way will backfire, some group somewhere will always disagree with its funding choices. The United Way will become the Divided Way. Sad for the people it helps as well as in this case for Scouting.

Can a scout be too excited about scouting?
berkshirescouter replied to mama_bear's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Tell your son great job! Don't slow him up, try to redirect him a little. I am not up on the Cub program but maybe, with the CM's permission he could help the other boys with their requirments. It will do two things; Keep him active and reinforce what he has learned. What do others on the list think? -
The American Military Man This is really powerful. Whether or not we agree with the war with Iraq, the troops deserve all the support we can give them. The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own Car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.

New Troop First meeting
berkshirescouter replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Congrats on a good start! Try $6 - 7/head per 3 meals for food and see how it works. It all depends on what you eat. Hot dogs are cheaper then steak. -
Looks like a good start. Remember no Pack is the property of a troop, always look at all the Troops in the area.
