500 Scouts pre-registered and were provided with weekly workout plans and physical conditioning tips by the Navy 237 Scouts showed up to the SEAL Summit challenge where they needed to past the real PST run by SEAL and Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman sailors. 46 Scouts passed. "The decisions to keep the PST the same as the real SEAL standard came from a panel of SEALs who are Eagle scouts," said Capt. Duncan Smith, commanding officer, Naval Special Warfare Recruiting Directorate. "Both Officer and enlisted SEALS chaired the panel and the decision was backed by Admiral Sean Pybus, the former commander of Naval Special Warfare Command." "The guys who didn't pass got upset, but I told them it took me four tries before I passed it. I am a SEAL today though because I kept putting one foot in front of the other and working at it," said Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Justin Smith. from http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=75568 Mike Rowe's video on the course. https://summit.scouting.org/en/Jamboree2013/Documents/Summit_Seal_Challenge_Information.pdf Well done. Outstanding!!

"BSA doesn't need to curry favor with the locals. Locating there was more than enough." Besides being a scout and good neighbor, the BSA needs to curry political favor with the locals for financial reasons (as in pay for Summit) Last summer, the BSA assumed that they as a non-profit could surely rent out, tax-free (local and state taxes) the Summit to for-profit groups such as concert promoters etc. The BSA was wrong in that assumption. So for the past year, the BSA has hoped to amend the West Virginia constitution to allow the BSA an exemption but the BSA has been vague on the extent of outside leases and other non-profits stepped in wanting an exemption too. http://www.wvgazette.com/News/201208140245 http://old.scouter.com/Forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=363719&p=1

Public invited to Jambo
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Neither I nor that article stated that all visitors would have access. I stated that VIP visitors did, e.g.,American Legion. Koutz, Cook and Butler ended their day with an exhilarating and cooling 50 miles-per-hour glide down a 1,500-foot zip line. First, however, was a 30-minute climb up to the launch tower atop one of the highest hills on the site. "That was worse than marching through the jungle in Vietnam," reflected Koutz. Still, a big smile creased his face as the zip line adventure ended. "I’d do it again right now – if I didn’t have to climb up that hill again," he said. http://www.legion.org/scouting/216456/national-commander-impressed-scouting-site -
"The Jamboree chief medical officer, Dr. Glen Ault, estimates that up to 500 people per day have been treated for various injuries at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, and an average of about 15 people per day are taken to hospitals. The Jamboree has more than 500 medical personnel."

According to Doug Nelson the Miami Valley council, Mr. Gene Schulz was involved with the Lewis and Clark project which reenacted the explorers’ journey. The group had a display on the expedition at the Jamboree and Mr. Schulz was serving as a presenter and merit badge counselor. According to reports, he collapsed while walking from his camp, CPR attempts were unsuccessful. Condolences to his family from grateful scouts and scouters. http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/local/g...e#.Ue-60W3y32s

Accept Partial from Camp I know was not complete ?

True. Your SM should have a scout conference regarding the Scout Law with this young man. Your troop needs a new AC. You did right. -
Heat Alerts and Hydration
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Hydration is part of it, but you also have to cool the body. On high humidity days, sweat evaporates less and cools the body less. The body responds by sweating more in an attempt to cool more thus causing dehydration. Fails due to humid air, so less activity and more break intervals in cooler spots - shade, lake, etc. Air quality is another issue. As power plants respond to higher electrical demand (air conditioning) there are more air pollutants, smog. -
Make Your Own Equipment

Great stuff Scouter99, thanks for link. My unit has had more success with patrol builds - patrol boxes and Klondike sleds than with individual builds of personal gear. -
Heat Alerts and Hydration
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Yesterday, a 30 yr old died hiking in New Hampshire White Mts. The cause has not been determined but heat and dehydration are likely factors. Weather is worse today. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Newsroom/2013/Q3/SR_hiker_death_071813.html -
General Media Buzz on Jambo
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Regarding some negative media reports, National needs to definitively respond to reports that Jamboree discriminates against obese/overweight scouts. Definitive as in onsite videos showing the temp/humidity, red flag warnings, the activity levels, exercise experts (particularly military), past experience at A.P. Hill and how that formulated changes in requirements and preparation - "physically strong". Show the benefits of the decision (heat related injuries are down) to scouts. My $0.02 -
Hot and humid everywhere in East. Read everyday has been a red flag day at Jambo. Hope scouts get a weather break soon. "Scouts are encouraged to drink water, and they sport a color-coded chart on a lanyard around their neck that helps them determine how much they should be taking in. When Scouts are alerted (signs and phone apps?) that the day has a green flag, they know to drink a half-quart of water per hour. Yellow means three-fourths of a quart per hour. Red flags mean to drink a quart (per hour). Black -- the highest-level caution -- lets Scouts know to drink even more water and avoid highly strenuous activities." http://www.dailymail.com/News/ScoutJamboree2013/201307180113

Public invited to Jambo
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Some visitors are more equal than others. VIP visitors may enter and participate in program areas, etc. "The Summit officially threw open its gates to visitors on Wednesday, attracting 1,600 people within the first hour and a half of opening. The Boy Scouts of America says that up to 50,000 visitors may attend the event, but when asked for the number of passes sold, they said they are not tracking these totals." http://www.register-herald.com/jamboree/x1724755848/Scouts-welcome-visitors -

Sustainability requirements finally released...some good discussion points, particularly population growth. Working on a farm would be a nice addition. Add to Stuff - plan how to recycle iPods, phones, pc's, monitors, CFLs, batteries, ... http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2013/07/15/sustainability-merit-badge-requirements-released/

St. Louis University of Scouting
RememberSchiff replied to karen1970's topic in Scouts with Disabilities
Saw this article about Troop 724, one of two special needs troops in the St. Louis area: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/troop-offers-haven-for-scouts-who-won-t-give-up/article_2d646403-e9ea-54d3-9325-346708adad73.html This special needs troop offers a "special" service to community - a 16 member color guard with distinct uniform. "The troop has performed on many occasions. “Last year we were in the opening ceremonies for Veterans Day†at a St. Louis event, Scoutmaster Joe Vaughan said. This year, Boeing Co., for which the troop is official color guard, has offered to send the boys to Pasadena, Calif., to march in the Rose Bowl Parade, he added." -
Talk to me about by-laws, please.
RememberSchiff replied to kari_cardi's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Some do, some don't. Basically the intent is to keep everyone on the same page - who does what, what is expected, etc. And of course, you must have yet another mission statement or vision statement or both?? Your characterization of by-laws as "guidelines" is fair as there are always exceptions and new circumstances to consider. Do you add revision upon revision or do you trust adult leaders to make fair, sound decisions? My $0.02 -
Saturday's news articles use phrases such as "health-conscious", "physically demanding", "tech use encouraged", "working local service projects",... good stuff!
