Ok, why did the BSA institute the change of "on demand" BOR's and "instant recognition"? It was NEVER that way when I was a scout. We waited until the next scheduled BOR (I hear the crying today "But that's 4 weeks. WAAAN, WAAAN", Well sometimes it was longer as my troop held no BORs in the summer). Life is that way. Try getting a driving test from the DMV on-demand, We waited until the next COR to received our badge and card but in the meantime we went about our scoutwork. No hissy fits, no dropping everything to give praise only to attempt do it again in front of the whole troop and wonder heh why isn't the scout and his family here. Oh, we already recognized him, no wonder. Patience. Politely wait your turn, while continuing your work. No Gimme. No entitlement. Express thanks for the time taken by adults, including the mean-looking State Trooper administering your driver test. Good decisions have good reasons. Oh meetings are on Thurs because that is when the room was available. Some might say that's a tradition, I say it was when the room was available. My $0.02

Consider it "preparation for life" where, outside of sports, accomplishments are often not quickly recognized, if at all. Patience, keep doing good scout work whether your efforts are recognized or not. The (old) Scout Way.

Safety and disciplinary issues are handled in that manner in our unit. Our BOR's tend to be monthly and not flexible as the committee members have other commitments.

Camp Anderson serves close to 2,500 Scouts a year, but now the camp may be forced to close. "It's sad to think about knowing I've spent so much time out here," said Shawn Givler, a scoutmaster for Troop 103. A report by the Boy Scouts of America, Laurel Highlands Council is recommending that Camp Anderson close. The report said the nonprofit is concerned over a $7,000 loss over the last five years, and there is a road and a portion of a fishing stream that can't be blocked off. The nonprofit is worried it could give unwanted visitors access to the camp. But local volunteers aren't going down without a fight. "I learned to chop wood here, I tied my first knot here, I did my first leather work here, just so many memories I have here," Pearlman said. "So that is why I am starting a petition and running this campaign." Pearlman is asking others who feel passionate about keeping Camp Anderson open to sign his petition on Change.org. So far, he has 1,500 signatures. "It really is a local and family affair here, with many generations coming to this camp and generations hoping their future can be invested into this camp as well," Pearlman said. "That's what it is all about -- making sure the camp is here for the kids now and the kids for the future," said Givler. Perhaps part of the Eagle Scout project workbook should include detachable, dated, approved (signatures and phone numbers) Work Permits to be posted only by scout. Similar to a town building permit which may be necessary too. I have seen situations where a scout lost control of his Eagle project due to some over-helpful adults. Not good. Anyway sounds like a learning opportunity. Soon wiser, good luck in his second try.

I was speaking of T-Life unit BOR member requirements, GTA 8.0.2.0 "The board is made up of three to six unit committee members—no more and no less. In units with fewer than three registered committee members available to serve, it is permissible to use knowledgeable parents (not those of the candidate) or other adults (registered or not) who are at least 21 years of age and who understand Boy Scouting’s aims. Using unregistered adults for boards of review must be the exception, not the rule. Registered committee members familiar with the unit program, who have had a background check, and who are Youth Protection trained are preferred. Scheduling boards of review when and where committee members can attend usually alleviates the problem of not having enough committee members for a board." But you are correct a unit EBOR or District EBOR has no requirements GTA 8.0.3.0 other than over 21. "There shall be no fewer than three and no more than six members, all at least 21 years old. They need not be on an advancement committee or registered with the Boy Scouts of America, but they must have an understanding of the rank and the purpose and importance of the review. This holds true for Eagle boards of review held in any unit, whether troop, team, crew, or ship." IMO, this seems bassackwards. Sorry I was not clearer.

Usually the BOR Chairman initiates panel introductions. There are fewer requirements to sit on a District BOR than your unit BOR, so at the District BOR a scout may have panelists who are not BSA members. District EBOR's are fading away here.

Not necessary, a scout should be able to introduce himself without help, after all he has had plenty of practice with Merit Badge counselors and other adult association situations. Ditto for SM.

Our camp targets are fixed at 10 yds. Most scouts do requirement f.1 of either recurve or compound option, though some are already accomplished JOAD archers so they need not shoot at camp. Success is more a function of the arrow quality than draw weight.

If i could change the micro-managing, no-added-value nature of Council to a activity resource provider, I would be a happier scouter. I need and anyone else who plans a camporee - a porta-potty contractor (hopefully one that Council has negotiated a contract). I tell Council I need 4 potties + one handicap and they handle it with contractor. - Outdoor Sports/Activities resources. I tell Council that I need some archery instructors for event and Council gives me some BSA-certified instructors. - water truck/tank. Council provides. - First Aid resources (maybe an Explorer Post or Venture Crew) My $0.02

We are re-evaluating. We have found a COH without food works as well maybe better. Less school night stress, just show up for ceremony with no mess to clean up. Maybe this year, two of our COH's will have pot-luck and two no food. YMMV

Hmm, I thought a troop needed a SM or ASM for outdoor activities but looking at the Tour Permit two adult (registered) leaders are required. Could the Troop Treasurer and Popcorn Guy take the troop camping if the SM approved and they had the required training? Seems so,

We had 4 boy scout troops and 3 Cub Packs in town. Each had a store window display during scout week. Our troop usually had either the Florist shop window or the pharmacy but definitely not the prime 4 corners 5&10 store. Catholics! All displayed their unit flags and neckers. Cub Packs displayed Pinewood Derby cars and den projects. Troops displayed scout craft (lashing projects were common), camping photos, merit badge books, and some merit badge projects (my Electronics Flip-Flop breadboard). We were permitted to paint (Tempera?) the inside of store windows. If the owner permitted, we added lights for campfire effects or Morse code signaling. Took some planning as we wanted to upstage the bigger troops in town, particularly the Catholic troop. Righteous battle. Only Christmas rivaled Scout Week's window decorations. Community Scouting what a concept.

Boy Scout Week in February. Celebrated the birth of Scouting within our local communities. - Placed on the program calendar and permission sought with store owners for window displays, write an article for local paper complete with photos. Publicity, publicity, publicity! Nope, not even a check-off on the lastest Most Excellent Unit Six Sigma Universal Annual Quality Award or whatever it is called. - Saturday the day before official start, set up window displays around town. Nope - Started on Sunday, Scout Sunday. Nope, nope. That's SuperBowl Sunday, nothing more Holy than Football and that's the Holiest Day of Football. - Wear scout uniform to school. Even Catholic schools would allow us! Nope, nope - Saturday, remove window displays and do some town clean-up service projects. The only remnant I see around here is adults arguing whether Scout Sunday, excuse me Scout Sabbath is on the weekend before Super-Bowl Sunday or the weekend after. Maybe the new tradition will be National asking scouts to wear their uniform while watching the Super-Bowl on Sunday? What if the Ground Hog came out of hole and saw Boy Scouts in the woods? I am stunned. What happens if after all this investment by OA, your Council decides to sell? Or is this camp in a land trust? Maybe OA should take over Council? Just stunned.
