Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a new law  guaranteeing more settlement money to Ohio Boy Scout abuse victims.

"...Ohio’s current civil statute of limitations in bankruptcy cases was 12 years. That’s now void for the next five years, meaning Boy Scout abuse victims filing a claim will receive all the money they’re owed through the settlement, rather than just 30 to 45% of it.

Ohio is the first state to take advantage of the settlement’s provision allowing states to extend the statute of limitations, according to sponsors Republican Rep. Bill Seitz."

  2. Update Oct 6, 2023

"Judge Michael J. Garcia of the New York Court of Appeals denied an application filed by Thomas Murphy's defense team seeking to have his conviction overturned after previously being denied by a lower appeals court. The court gave no reason for the denial."

“We feel relief that the verdict has been upheld and we have found justice for Andrew and Troop 161,” Alisa McMorris, Andrew's mother, said Thursday. “For our family there is still an emptiness we feel each day. Andrew will never walk through that door again. He will not graduate with his friends this coming June, and there is a deafening silence that echoes from his empty room.”

...Haven't noticed a difference in acorns.

New England weather has changed, it is now raining acorns.

"Mass Wildlife calls it a potential masting year. Some years oak trees will drop all of their acorns together at the same time. It's an evolutionary process that works to overwhelm predators by covering the ground with acorns. The hope is that some survive becoming food if they all fall at once."

  4. Migrating birds and hurricanes...

"Many people don’t realize that most birds migrate at night. At the height of fall migration in the U.S., that means that under favorable migration conditions, there are hundreds of millions of birds passing overhead as we sleep. When dawn breaks, these migrating birds drop down into the landscape below them to eat, drink, and rest until the next night when, if in good condition, they can continue their nocturnal migration journey....millions of birds were likely migrating south when Hurricane Lee swept through off the Maine coast.

The remnants of Hurricane Lee made it all the way to Ireland and Great Britain, carrying with it some of these same migrating birds who now found themselves in very unfamiliar territory. They had intended to end up in the southern U.S. on their way to the Caribbean, or Central or South America. Instead, the land they sighted was on the other side of the North Atlantic..."

  5. Roverway 2024 will take place in Norway.

The jamboree is divided into two parts. From 22nd July 2024, the Rovers (16-22yr olds)  will have the opportunity to explore a path with other rovers from several different countries. The participants can choose from a number of different paths around Norway. The paths will have different themes, and all will get the chance to explore Norwegian nature and culture. After five days along the various routes, everyone gathers for a joint jamboree at Lundsneset, Stavanger. A closing ceremony on 1st August 2024 will mark the end of the 11 days of Norwegian adventure, and on August 2nd everyone will travel home with memories that will last them a lifetime!

Roverway is one of the most popular guide and scout events in Europe with approximately 5000 participants and has previously been held in Finland, Iceland, Italy, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands.

To attend as a Participant you need to be born between August 1st, 2001 and July 22nd, 2008. If you’re too old to join as a Participant you can join our excellent IST (International Service Team),

Note: I saw a Mexican contingent listed but NOT a US or Canadian contingent.

Current SPL here, I'm an SPL for a troop just outside of chicago and im not yet in high school.  I became SPL 8 months ago and had rebuilt the troop.

    Congratulations.

I agree with you ( that the SPL doesn't go to committee meetings) but they? had decided that the SPL runs the troop meetings, PLC's and has the job of CC so also runs the committee meetings too!

You cannot be the CC (Troop Committee Chairman). That is a registered, trained adult leader position. Was that a typo?

I was told at the end of my 6 month term that since no one else wants my position I either do it again during the school year or we don't have an SPL and we are disbanding.

Who told you this? But regardless, you and your SM should be training junior leaders or is that the issue - you need to train your replacement?

I also don't have a patrol leader, scribe or any position other than Assistant spl and quartermaster that is the most inactive scout in our troop.

Not much of a PLC. Just you, an ASPL, and an absent QM?

As a full time student with a job, and on a national gymnastics team it simply isn't possible. and not to mention but there's 19 active scouts and 26 scouts total.

Train your ASPL to replace you. If  ASPL does not want to step up, then find another ASPL. With that number of scouts, two or three patrols should exist. There is more work to be done to rebuild your troop and it is not all on your shoulders. Delegate.

any advice? Junior Leader Training and Patrol Method. Your SM should be helping you with this.  Compare your gymnastics team leadership and teamwork with what exists with your troop.

  9. Oct 3 (Reuters) - U.S. District Judge Richard Andrews in Delaware declined to stop the Boy Scouts of America's $2.46 billion abuse settlement from moving forward, saying that stopping the settlement in its tracks would be both impractical and unfair to the many people and organizations relying on it to resolve abuse claims.

Gilion Dumas, who represents some of the abuse claimants who have appealed, stated she would ask the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overrule Andrews.

I am the Scoutmaster/Dad of a local Troop for about 5 years now and over 10 years with the Unit. During this time, another father (Mr. X) has been a year ahead with his son and advancements. We teamed up about 5 years ago as I was the SM and he took on the role as CC, and the floodgates opened with trips, events and overall success within the Troop. We recruited great adults, MBC's and the success of the Troop showed...

    ...

The CC has bullied over all aspects of the Troop at this point to include ALL committee roles, trips, Scout Leadership positions, and now has become the Chartered Rep, Unit Commissioner, Committee Chair, Advancement Chair, Fundraising Chair, District Member ,MBC,etc. Committee Meetings turn into arguments over every subject with "NO!! I'm the COR! (CC, etc)" In recent months, he has resigned then to reappear at a SPL meetings unannounced, dictating what Scouts lack.....

    Some questions:

    1. Scouting does not tolerate bullying. Is he bullying scouts?

    2. What is Mr. X current leadership position?  I am blown away he is/was CC, COR, and UC.

    3. Are any of the other great adults Troop Committee members? What are their thoughts?

    4. Have you or Committee members spoken with IH ?

Sadly adult conflict is too often the most transparent yet slowest, least remedied problem in Scouting.

  14. From the Norwich & Winsford Guardian (UK)

The 1st Davenham Scouts Group, founded in 1930, has never had its own facility before and was most recently based at St Wilfreds Parish Church Hall. However, in 2010 the group was unable to renew its lease and members have since been meeting outdoors at Peckmill Scout Wood. Members have had to use temporary facilities such as portable toilets and a shipping container for storage.

The group then bought the 2.4-acre site in June 2019. and was granted permission to build a hut.

Maybe unit-owned "scout huts" will make a comeback here in the states? Years ago, we had two scout land properties in town which were sold as CO's were assumed to provide meeting space into the future.  Now we compete and pay for community center bookings without storage,

  15. "The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) collects a variety of species of acorns and nuts that can be planted at its Augusta Nursery (Crimora, Va.) to grow into tree seedlings that will become the forests of tomorrow. These seeds will produce next year’s hardwood seedling crop, which will be sold to Virginia’s forestland owners. Seedlings grown from Virginia-grown seed generally produce trees that will best thrive in our state’s climates.

Certain nuts can be difficult to find regionally, and availability can change year to year. At times, one species of tree in a region may produce minimal acorns, while others are abundant. This is why DOF puts out a call-to-action for landowners across the state. The more trees that can be identified for collection, the more nuts can be potentially planted in the nursery."

Virginia’s Department of Forestry is asking the public to help the agency collect the acorns in support of their efforts to plant trees statewide.

Joshua McLaughlin is the nursery manager at VDOF’s nursery in Augusta County. He says each year people donate acorns which are then planted at the nursery. Within a year, those seeds become seedlings - available for purchase for around $3.00.

“So here in about a few weeks, we’ll start putting acorns in the ground, and then that will be next year’s crop,” McLaughlin explained. “And so like for this year, starting October 2, we actually have our online store starting our seedlings sale season, and we sell seedlings to the public. We’re not in it to make a lot of money. seedlings are very inexpensive. "

DOF needs the following species this year.

*Bold species are of particular interest:

    • *Black Oak
    • *Chestnut Oak
    • *White Oak
    • *Black Walnut
    • Chinese Chestnut
    • Northern Red Oak
    • Pin Oak
    • Shumard Oak
    • Southern Red Oak
    • Swamp Chestnut Oak
    • Swamp White Oak
    • Water Oak
    • Willow Oak

Keep these acorn collection tips in mind:

    • Safety first. Stay away from roadways.
    • Look for whole, uncracked acorns that are dark brown or green. Collected acorns do not need caps.
    • Do not collect on private property without permission.
    • Place in a paper bag. Please do NOT use plastic bags.
    • Use a separate bag for each species.
    • Label the bag with the collection date and species (if known). If you’re not sure, include a few leaves from the tree to help us with identification.
    • Place in a cool area until you’re ready to drop them off (sooner the better!).
    • Collection from yards, sidewalks, driveways, etc., is recommended, to ensure collection of a single species. (Forest collection makes it difficult to determine the tree of origin and often leads to mixing of acorn types.)
    • Avoid sticks, leaves, gravel and debris.
