  1. I bought mine loose, airflow in summer and room to layer underneth when it cools off. Proablem is mine won't stay up using just the belt, stiched in a pair of loops on the side to hook suspenders to, maybe I should add buttons for fieldpant liners? Working on another pair of suspenders so I don't have to use the Army surplus ones. Mostly happy though feeling the bulk and drag of the leg zippers on my legs is a little weird.
  2. Tiny troop at the moment, I'm the only one to wear a necker, helps remind me why I'm there.

So if yours isn't religious, or the CO isn't "ecumenical", then that's important, eh?" Not really, though I have seen where when a church changes pastors and the whole troop/CO relationship changes. My troop for decades stored equipment at the church we meet at, when a new pastor showed up we were only allowed to keep our flags there, though more important we were still allowed to meet there. The troop did have to find a ne
  4. Check with your local Lions, Kiwanis, Leigon or other service clubs, many are happy to find a local project to support.
  5. Is it possible for him to get lost while mowing said yard? How will he follow the buddy system while "hiking"?
  6. Do I regret not earning my Eagle? No. What I regret was not doing the little work left to be awarded Life, to this day I don't really understand my mind set. I had advanced with reasonable speed to Star and had stalled out for almost 2 years when I left the troop. I do not regret any of my time spent as a Scout, no where else was I going to get worth-while mentoring unaffected by my folks. And I have enjoyed returning to my old troop after 30 years, to serve with my old SPL now ScoutMaster to guide a new group of youth.
  7. After some hunting I found that Metrosene 0997 100% poly thread made by Mettler is a fine color match to the khaki/tan of the uniform shirt. I needed to beef up and repair some button holes and this thread did the trick. In fact I even added another button at the bottom as my shirt is a little short through the body.
  8. Dumb question (or maybe not), how many troops are trying to meet after school as opposed to after supper? Background: only our Cub dens met after school, both Webelos and Scout meetings were 7:pm, also took care of the wearing the uniform to school issue.
  9. I was thinking more along the lines of "Uniform Tattler", like a first grader who enjoys ratting out others for minor infractions.
  10. What Eagledad said! I would like to add: any Webelo working on his Arrow of Light should be exposed the concept of Boy Led.
  11. Well, this was the early 70s, sports programs provided the gear those kids needed. Some time back when a youth I had both the shorts and the pants, both are long gone now as I out grew them, still have the garters and tabs tho. I have long felt the best way to lead is by example, so as a Scouter my being in full uniform should at least encourage the boys to wear their uniform shirts to meetings. Wish neckerchiefs were popular still.
  12. My expearance was like Jeffrey H, most boys didn't own uniform pants. Favorite t-shirt was one with the summer camp logo on it, most boys in my troop thought summer camp was the high point of their Scouting year. Most of us would be at formations in blue jeans but every last one of us had on our uniform shirts and troop neckerchiefs, ironed or tight rolled and looking sharp.
  13. Thanks for the link, if nobody offers what I need here I'll try that next.
  14. I'm looking the old style fully embroidered white number red background troop numbers as used in the 60s and 70s, need just a few 1s but can't seem to find any 7s. Plenty of old style 6s, 9s and 2s to trade with, some other stuff from that era too. Message through site or post here, thank you! prairie
  15. What about "Last of the Summer Wine" from the BBC? My PBS station has carried it for years and its the one show I look forward to.
  16. So far my 2 inch thick Thermarest has done well down to 20 deg, would put a closed cell foam mat underneath it for colder weather.
  17. This topic fits with the webtoon I saw yesterday. http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20061022
  18. Have just been testing a Coleman 533, biggist drawback is anything over about a quart seems heavy for the pot support system, with care is might support 2 quarts. Both the old Coleman 502 and the MSR Whisperlight will hold up more. The cooking times seem a little slower than the MSR too. The up side is even at 28 deg it was a simple no-flareup stove to light, neither the other two stoves will light with out a lot of drama but the 533 behaves very much like a propane stove. Too bad they didn't build the 533 strong like the old 502 Sportstrs.
  19. questions: Would the priest approve of Scouts and Scouters if he and they took the time to get to know each other? Or is attending Mass the litmis test?
  20. There are mice mice mice Shooting dice dice dice at the store at the store There are mice mice mice Shooting dice dice dice at the Quartermaster's store. My eyes are dim, I can not see. I have not brought my specks with me. I HAVE NOT brought my specks with me.........
  21. When you go camping? Back when I started Scouting no campout was complete till somebodys tennishoes had been burnt, I remember I supplied one pair, might have been two, but not by intention, just wanted them dried out a bit.
  22. At a camporee in 1974-75 I was in a patrol that ran up against one of these uber-trols, I was one of the oldist by that time with quite a few youngsters, in skills where strength mattered little we did well, the tug-o-war against a patrol that was also in football ment we didn't have a chance. In fact some adult leader we had never seen before objected to the fairness of the match up. Don't know where we finished and don't remember who won overall, we still had a good time.
  23. I'm with packsaddle, the boys notice their troop, other troops only matter so that summer camp, camperees and other council type events can happen. I'm returning to scouting after 30 years, my old troop is still there for me however is is in a slump right now as far as number of active scouts. Adult leadership is small and I suppose thats from parents leaving once their boy is done, I'dd like to think Scouting was rewarding enough for a few to continue. I think some of the gloom is from prople seeking help with proablems here and not many reports of success because if things are going well
  24. Several things just on uniforms. Offer a khaki shirt as suitable for summer wear as the green collerless one of the early 1970s, drop the eplites and sew red patches on the shoulders if you just have to have them, I would do with out as there are enough indicators on the uniform to show what kind of scout or scouter you are. Offer a heavier weight shirt for cooler weather and night time events, both should be made out of strong, comfortable, wear resistant cloth and sell for less than whats offered now. Uniform shorts should be long enought to cover the tops of your legs when you are sit
  25. A full 32 inch square one, color is a good match to the red on the uniform. It was 36" square at first but that had the tails down to my navel. Cloth is a little heavier than I wanted but since this one is for cool weather wear thats okay and it will be plenty strong. Rolling it was a trick till I grabed two 3/16 rods outa the shop and rolled the neckerchief around them, Guess I will have to break down and buy an iron now. I fill a 2XL shirt and it seemed long enough. Next one will be a triangler 32 or 33 inch one for summer wear. Checked my neckerchiefs that have been in my Scout st
