  1. Scoutldr, When we were in AZ, the adults (except the Advisers), went to a different room after the opening. But my son and the other Arrowmen from the Troop never wanted to go - it was booorring. As it happens, the Advisers were running the meeting and telling them what would be on their calendar and when! This is what kills interest in Scouting for young men after Cubs, they don't WANT us running things, but we can't seem to help it.
  2. Update: Thanks to Eagle92 for his attempts to help. I don't why but this morning I'm able to enter the area fine - using the same spelling I've been using all along. Just a computer/technology issue I guess. Appreciate the help Eagle!
  3. We all know OA is 100% youth-run and youth-led - right? Recently, we went to the Chapter meeting (we just moved here) to introduce ourselves and get involved. On the way in we're greeted by the (Eagle Scout) Chapter Chief. Seems to a pretty impressive young man from the quick conversation. The meeting begins (quick, informal ceremony led by the Chapter ADVISER) and the Chapter Chief says, "This meeting is now in order, now we'll move to the Welcome by (insert Chapter ADVISER's name here)." The ADVISER spoke for the remainder of the (1hr) meeting. Seriously, the Chapter Chief says M
  4. Amazing Story! First I'd contact Scouting and Boy's Life mgazine. this is the kind of thing I'd think will make a great story for the magazines. Plus, a side benefit to you, they'll do the research to answer your question. Congrats to all the young men involved!
  5. Nuts? I don't think so. Are the Scouts enjoying the program? If yes, this genius. Some Troops develop traditions with their Scout camp, others develop traditions away from the Council camp. Both are great as long as the Scouts are enjoying the program. We've been involved with Troops that were Scout Camp devotees - even had their "own" site and their "own" week, Troops that did the younger Scouts to Souncil camp and older Scouts to wherever they planned, and even one that had their own campsite and own MBCs to run their own summer camp. They all worked.
  6. AHG is a (relatively) small organization; there are only 15 total units in the state of TX and noen near us. I expect there is little chatter because few have any involvement with them in the first place.
  7. Another Success Story! Thanks for sharing the follow-up with us. Makes you feel all warm inside when they do the right thing don't it!
  8. In the post in Saudi when the first SCUD missile alert came then - these became VERY ho-hum, very quickly. When the Most Beautiful Girl in the World said "Yes" - I'm still in shock over this one. When MBGW sid "We're pregnant". Intestinal anthrax. When our son said he was thinking about hurting himself.
  9. THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF TRYPE I'D EXPECT TO READ IN A POST FROM YOU!!!!!!!! Ok, sorry, just kidding. I thought I was on the "Courtsey and Civility thread for minute there. Thanks for your insight and adding something positive to th discussion boards that we can all think of from time to time. I have to say though, that since joining in on this forum I have been very impressed that MOST people almost ALL of the time are pretty courteous to one another. That's one of the things I like about this group. Thanks to all of you who make this a fun, informative and courteous and kind
  10. MamaCM, Welcome! I'm a little confused actually. As the CM you will be responsible for Pack Meetings (once a month) and the like for the Pack. Be the Committee and the Den Leaders are vital parts of the Pack Leadership as well. In fact the DLs organize, supervise, meetings every week. Does your Pack have DLs already? Was the only spot for the departing CM? If so, congrats on volunteering for one of the funnest jobs in the Pack. You get the privilege of handing out rank advancements, leading cheers, MCing the Pinewood and Space Derbies, etc. As the CM, you are the smiling face of the
  11. Great point, Trevorum. If the program is not challenging enough to require fitness, maybe there is no need to change. But if there IS a physical challenge that is exciting enough that folks WANT to do it, they will make the needed changes. Still seems to be a silence, in general, on program ideas to combat the problem. So I'll pose a different question. Is body composition an issue that needs the attention of Scouting? If yes, who in Scouting needs to be targetted Cubs, Scouts, Scouters...?
  12. Beavah, I hadn't thought about the Cubs aspect but I think you're right. The most (as in total number of) obese kids I've had - in a unit I was directly involved with - were in Packs. Thinking back, only ONE of them stayed in through transition to Boy Scouts. He struggled at first, but made it - and lost quite a bit of weight. Any Cubbers out there? Do you have this issue and what are your plans/programs for addressing it?
  13. So at least for the most part, your Scouts are fit and able to live Teddy's "Strenous Life" ideal now. BW, I always love to hear there's a backpacking Trop out there. Based on the lack of responses maybe we're not really seeing a problem out there - or maybe we do but don't have a plan (yet?) to address it. In our last Troop, there was only Scout who was overweight. He was morbidly obese, according to his doctor. He was advised to lose weight, a lot of it, to save his life. In the Troop, we started a "Fitness Focus" with him in mind. His parents however (who never left a meeting BTW) simp
  14. Ummm, I'm tracking what the Admonition is, where it is on the Jumpstart area, etc. But when I enter it, I can not get into the site. Are you able to log in? Is anyone else having this issue? Thanks.
  15. OK, so I typed in the Admonition from memory - no dice. Figured it must be a spelling error (I am a Hillbilly), so I did it again - still denied. So I went to the Jumpstart page (my spelling was corret, BTW) and copied the word from the page and pasted into the "Forum Password" box - still doesn't like me... Anybody else having a problem logging in - or is it just me?
  16. So, we've had talks about the hypocrisy of overweight leaders at National, the evils of Dutch Oven cooking, and the sedentary lifestyle of the new millennium. Many have expressed their own need to lose weight. SO... What are you looking at for encouraging the Scouts in your units to stay active and healthy, and maintain proper body composition? Looking for hard plans or programs you are planning on (or considering) implementing/encouraging - not more talk about the rightness or wrongness of the issue, please.
  17. Though we seem to have hit on a very sensitive point here... ScoutingAgain, I agree; the Moderate Normal Person's Party sounds good to me. Problem is, it seems we all ENJOY the controversy. What would we do without the other party/guy/group to point our fingers at? Of course, neither party believes the other party is willing to compromise and neither party is willing to yield a single vote/sound bite. So we get to hear all about the apology debate instead of the actual health care debate. May be we should change the names to apology-gate and health-gate. In the end, whether we
  18. No intention of hijacking the thread - just wanted to point out we should be civil and courteous to one another; so apologies for the spin off. The Civil War ending in 1865 - 144 years by my Hillbilly math; not over 150 years now... I can not concede what was lost before my birth. I am proud of my heritage - Scot-Irish, Southern, and all American. I was, naively it seems, unaware that regional prejudices were still so strong that would show in a Scout forum. Back to the topic - the "gentleman" from SC should have acted, and continue to act, as a gentleman.
  19. Though I usually avoid posting to the "politics" forum, I feel compelled. Was his behavior wrong? Yes. Have others from both parties also been rude? Yes. Does that excuse him? No. Should he apologize again? That's between him and his conscious. Now, to the matter matoviated me to write: Why all the references to to the South, southerners, etc? I find that offensive. I wasn't aware that regional prejudice was still so strong in America - you know, the UNITED States of America. I don't believe his actions are based on the confederacy. So, to recap: He was wrong. As a conserv
  20. As a Troop we have used them three times: 1) In a summer camp out of our Council area. 2) At a camp done for the express purpose of using the aquatics facility. 3) For the Webelos and their parents on a joint camp-out. As a Scouter, often for training courses. The pavilion serving as the launch point for the scheduled activities.
  21. From the National website: 1978 Five ranks established in Cub Scouting: Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Arrow of Light Award. The link for this is: http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/CubScouts/AboutCubScouts/history.aspx and includes a full timeline for Cub Scouting and its origins.
  22. Personally, I'm not a "things should always be..." kind of guy. My son started Scouting in a rural area, not many people, not many MBCs. He was a Cub and I was an MBC for a fair number of MBs. For those who want to limit the number of MBs one person can register for, I say that's great - if there are counselors available. To say we should restrict Eagle from Scouts in the name of upholding the experience? Well, that sounds a little off to me. As my son progressed in Scouting, I never removed myself from MBs I counseled. Again, usually in rural areas. I counseled many, many Scouts thr
  23. I first saw this story about a week ago (on FoxNews). I was (as they hoped) shocked by the story. Personally, I was glad his air time was limited and he seemed to fade away. No use allowing this guy to spread his message.
  24. We buy lump charcoal for most of grilling, chunk hardwood is used for some dishes, but Kingsford is the #1 choice for reliable, predictable DO cooking for me. When doing precise baking or competing its what I use every time. Great idea for the drip pan; we've used a sheet of tin roofing and bricks at Expos for this as well. But I expect the drip pan has more rigidity. I also have a square Meco grill grill I use for a portable DO cooking stand. Much cheaper than the custom tables, prtoects from the wind, and can be used as a normal grill. This works great for demos, etc.
  25. Good point, eghiglie. Substituting Splenda for sugar in the recipes cuts a lot a calories while maintaining sweetness. The exchange rate is right on the bag (of Splenda) and works great. Our family's been using Slenda for a long time. For baked goods (like in a DO) we use a mix of Splenda/sugar. And let's not forget the DO is great for NON-dessert items, too. Anything that can be cooked in your home oven and be cooked in your DO!
