Belt loop/pin frustration with buying & record-keeping
Basementdweller replied to TigerLisa's topic in Cub Scouts
I would say yes to missing something, I don't know what to tell you, I would call your council office and have them run an advancement report for you, you would probably be surprised what is missing. Prior to Scout Tracks we used Scoutnet which is the official BSA internet advancement solution. It is free Lisa, call your district executive and ask for access, he will be thrilled. But I digress Scoutnet prints webelos activity badges and all arrow points on the advancement report. Scout tracks does prints arrow points and AB as well and if I remember correctly so did Pack Master. The BB belt loop is not restricted, you can walk in and buy it. Supposedly you are restricted in earning it, but plenty of Packs in our area own their own BB guns and archery equipment. -
when can you start working on arrow of light

a boy can remain active as a webelos till he is 11 1/2. Most are ready to be in boy scouting. my bear son will have the AOL requirements complete by the time the Pack starts back up in september. Two Resident camps and Day camp. Plus two Den camps no problem. then it is just waiting for the time to pass and work on AB that he wants. He will cross over as soon as he can, his choice he has made a number of friends in the troop. -
Belt loop/pin frustration with buying & record-keeping
Basementdweller replied to TigerLisa's topic in Cub Scouts
Lisa, Belt loops and pins do not get recorded at the council level. The council does not care one bit if Johny earned his BB belt loop. They do care if he earned his bobcat, wolf, gold and silver arrow points. Webelos activity badges are recorded as well. Scout tracks will print out a shopping list for you that will include the belt loops and pins. -
The funny thing about scouting, especially cub scouting, you can take a class room course that is supposed to prepare you for the outdoors. Heck they will even give you a pretty certificate to prove you were there. But the courses are required if you follow the rules. I am interested in seeing what the Cub Safety guidelines are. My suggestion find a local outdoor group, or outdoor store, I am sure they will put on a quality program for your scouts.

Issue with New Geocaching Merit Badge
Basementdweller replied to dave.424's topic in Advancement Resources
they have partnered and I have eagerly awaited the release of the scouting geobugs to go find a few. None are on the geocache website yet. I called our council to find out about our 5 bug allotment, but to no avail. If you buy the usb cable.....looks like the standard one to me......you should be able to load custom waypoints. -

The official date is June 1st. When school ends you can begin working toward your next rank. Like boy scouts it can all be worked on at the same time. You can work on all the ranks thru 1st Class at the same time. The Pins and Belt loop....If you read it, it says "As a Webelos Earn......Belt loop". It is written in your book. But here is the link http://www.boyscouttrail.com/webelos/webelos_activity_badge_requirements.asp 8. While you are a Webelos Scout, earn the Cub Scout Sports belt loop for swimming. Remember a scout is Trustworthy, it seems someone is trying to find some short cut. In the process you will end up short cutting their scouting experience. -
Classb is too expensive in my opinion. Locally here we can get a silk screen shirt for $5 each.

We put a post on Craigslist. We had a couple of home builders contact us and we could have filled a garage with what we collected, some of it ended up as fire wood.

Belt loop/pin frustration with buying & record-keeping
Basementdweller replied to TigerLisa's topic in Cub Scouts
Do yourself a huge favor and spend the money on Pack management software. One pack I am involved with uses scout tracks and the other Pack Master. I like Scout tracks better, it is less expensive too. It is a Web based and everyone can easily access the data.....plus the parents can enter their scouts achievements and belt loops. Scout tracks prints the form you turn into council for rank advancement, a distribution list and a shopping list. Belt loops we had to have a talk with our parents regarding a scout is trust worthy. setting some ground rules. -
You are going to get a million answers for clothing. My cubs have hiked 127 miles since September. My Son is approaching 1,000 miles as a bear. So I have a bit of experience. Hiking clothing, is what every the weather dictates. Summer shorts and light long sleeve shirt, Winter layers and hats. The thing about gear is the sky is the limit far as cost. I have a tiger that shows up in goretex and I hike in 20 year old wool. They always get a kick out of "cotton kills" Cotton hold moisture and can cause hypothermia. For a cub leave hike, the boots and cloths they have will be adequete. Foot wear is personal choice, in winter I hike in hiking boots in the winter and running shoes in the summer. You are going to get the old school boys demanding boots, I have read that every pound on your foot is like 5 in the pack. Running shoes or trail runners for summer. I have refused to take a boy who was in running shoes on a snowy, wet winter hike.

I wouldn't bother, it is more than a little possible that the program will be meaningless with out that middle weekend.
-
I intend on remaining in Cub Scouting after my son crosses over to give him space to create his own scouting experience. He needs to work with the youth and adult leaders, I am aware that my presence changes the group dynamic. There should be less "stuff" in boy scouts for the helicopter parent/type A personality to do. To be honest, it is really tough to watch them struggle, but it is part of the deal.
-
Such is my life. All of the good stuff happens on the same weekends. You think someone at council would try to help spread it out a bit. All that good stuff makes for tough choices. What I would do, is at the committee meeting ask to move the Pack activities. That is the only thing you can do. If they say no then it gets to be political roulette. The CSI sounds fantastic. Hopefully they understand.

There is a ton of discussion in other forums as to the best fuel. But in my reading the best is the fuel line HEET in the yellow bottle, it is readily available and inexpensive, here is a link http://zenstoves.net/Stoves.htm#Fuels I use heet, it does fine.

I would register them, and if the registration doesn't bounce then your good. I would have them attend and then not record the advancement till June 1. it is my opinion they are close enough that it shouldn't matter.

Relax, Have fun with the boys, pick up the leader book and pick up the youth book and sit down and read them. At this point your making it more complicated than it needs to be. Relax With the recent posts, I am going to tell you that you are wasting your money on woodbadge if you take it now. You are not ready. Take all of the Cub and BS leader training courses, not the ones on line. But the instructor lead courses. You will get to network with other scouters and interact, give and receive ideas, get local program help. Roundtable, have you been to one yet. It will open your eyes. The HOLY GRAIL of Boy scouting is the Patrol Method, While many strive for it few actually achieve it. Your a couple of years from worrying about it. as you have seen it is the source of endless debate. When you take SM training it will be discussed. What about down time on the campout? let the boys hunt bugs or get muddy in the creek. Why do things you can do at a den meeting at a camp? Seems like wasted effort. I would concentrate on things they can't do at home or during a den meeting. Just curious, what does this post have to do with the Webelo Den???(This message has been edited by Basementdweller)

That is a great program, a shame is it a 10 hour drive for us. Kinston NC. Kings BBQ, very tasty. But I think I like Wilbers in Goldsboro better. I spent a little time in Morehead. But I digress.
-
In our region, Boy Scouts get the Council camps in June and early july. The cubs and Webelos mid july and August. So it is a difference in a regions. If it works for you, great.
-
Wow people, relax. He needs trained, not in a woodbadge way, but a cub scout way. Actually he needs experience, nothing time and mentoring won't fix. Brother, you are going to screw up, trust me we all do. You know it is ok. The boys probably won't even notice. The boys attention will fade and come back, just the way they are. They still are boys. What you are planning is more than most scout troops accomplish.

Can a scout have an email address officially?
Basementdweller replied to Exibar's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Lisa has a point, they are forever txting. That would probably be the best way to contact them. -
depends on the theme. Sometimes in chairs up front, sometimes by den, other times with family. Some times on the floor. You know the best part, there is no right or wrong.

what the heck happened to my post....... Well, my point was, There is a group of us who back pack with our sons. My bear backpacks and he has about 300 miles under his boots. The group is for the most part parent son combos. So for them to prohibit something like this it will just drive us from conducting this activity as a scouting event. For the record there are a number of manufactured aluminum can alcohol stoves. search ebay for white box stove. So what is the point??????? Ridiculous, how bout spending some money and fixing our camps. BTW my Bear carry's and uses a jetboil or coleman apex. He asked Santa for a whisperlite. Too much for my bear. You really need to pay attention to what your doing or you will flame the shelter or picnic table.
