  1. I had a backyard campout when my youngest son was a Webelos Scout. Decided to bunk all 7 in one tent, 10x12. MISTAKE! Most wanted to be quiet and sleep, but 2 wanted to cause trouble, and there was not quiet until almost 2 am. Other than the getting-to-sleep part all went well, but if I have another campout with my current Webelos Den, I'll separate them for sure!
  2. I was a Campfire Girl! A Bluebird, specifically. I believe it was roughly equivalent to Tiger Cubs.
  3. Eagle, I often do this, too. We get a lot of rain on the East Coast... majority of wetness comes from the floor of your tent... put a tarp inside and your tent floor can get wet all it wants, but the water won't come through the tarp.
  4. But earning all 20 activity badges and being a Cub since Tigers aren't qualifications for crossing over, Webelo isn't a word, and Webelos are in Dens. Boy Scouts are in patrols. I also don't understand your opening sentence... most Webelos 2 were Webelos 1 last year... it sounds to me like you might need to look into some training to understand the program... and Ding Dong is correct... January is 6 months away!
  5. Leaving this coming Sunday! Been there once before, 2009. Everything about the camp was excellent, especially the campfire programs. Only shortfall was the way the mess hall was set up... the food was good and plentiful, but the logistics of it was a PITA. Excited about going back with son #2!
  6. I have a big square tarp that fits under my biggest tent. If I'm using a smaller tent, I just don't unfold it as many times... I want it under there for protection but nowhere near the edges. I am constantly amazed at folks who love having their little "porch" surrounding the tent!
  7. Hi Sean's Mom. I'm sorry your son's leader was short with him. My son is to this day "legitimately, genuinely" afraid of the water, more so than anyone else I have ever met. He is a 21 year old Eagle Scout who did not earn his Aquanaut, because he was not willing to swim. He eventually took several sessions of one-on-one lessons and was able to learn to swim well enough to earn his ranks in Boy Scouts, but he definitely hated it and did the bare minimum in that department. 3 years spending 7 weeks living at camp in the summer as a staffer and he never even brought a swimsuit with him. Asperger
  8. That makes me think of high school grads who are not attending college... there is no point participating in the ceremony? Yes, of course there should be a bridging or graduation ceremony for those graduating from Cub Scouts!
  9. Me again... after reading through I think you are on the right track. Do Your Best to remain calm and active, and hopefully he'll be in a better situation in Boy Scouts. I think it is hard to imagine being involved in a Pack that has such problems. Thank you for being reasonable and for trying to make things right.
  10. Christineka, I haven't read through the whole thread and I apologize for that. But so far my exception to your stance is simply that YOU are not to be handling this... it's your boy who needs to present the evidence as it were.
  11. I feel like Bear and Webelos have entirely too much homework-style stuff. I make a real effort to make every single Den meeting have at least one part that is really fun, funny, or exciting. That's what they will remember... and we have as many as weather allows, outside. It's hard sometimes though. I agree that the various help books that are available are outdated... so is the Bear or (Wolf?) handbook, for instance where they are supposed to sing to the tune of "Good Night, Ladies"!?!
  12. Does anyone know where this thread is? I can't find it... but I get so many error messages I wonder if it's just me.
  13. Lol, Frank, that's a lot of posts. He (COR) made the decision alone, and notified the CM (of 3 years) a few days before our bridging ceremony. He did say "that was always the plan", we think he probably assumed the CM was stepping down and therefore looked for a replacement, but there was a massive communication fail and no one (except the replacement and the COR) knew what was coming. I'm not sure why you mentioned an injury etc.? The old CM (the one that was removed) is still in the Pack now as a DL , and is also on the Troop Committee. He hasn't had any problems and is generally well-liked.

  15. I always wanted to do a big, really big, grid drawing. And we did... we drew a US map on a basketball court... about 10 Cubs, 2 1/2 hours. Epic. Failed at an attempt to do Space Derby, Succeeded at leading Bears in building a Cubmobile... I would love to do a leaders' Thriller dance as a surprise at maybe our October Pack meeting. Also would love to use Cubs to make some sort of pic from above, like a fleur de lis or something to be photographed from the air!
  16. around 120 last I heard. they are successful, I've been to a couple of their Pack meetings, great fun. I don't really know the nuts and bolts of it though.
  17. Agree completely! You must have been so proud of your Scout for giving back the badge. I've had this happen twice (not my sons) and it is a heartwarming moment. One was a boy who seems to be growing out of being a serious troublemaker and gave back a summer camp award he had not completed, and the other was a Webelos in my Den who *tried* to give back an activity badge because he thought he had not finished it. We actually had to sit down and go over everything we had done to prove it to him. I wish more Scouts (and parents) had this attitude!
  18. they are crossing to the next rank... it's just fun for them. Ask the boys. In my Pack, all the boys cross the bridge from one rank to the next. A Pack near us has the younger ranks cross their little homemade Pack bridge, and the Webelos cross into Boy Scouts on the Burnside Bridge in Antietam. Even boys who are not joining Boy Scouts cross the little bridge... they are crossing out of Cub Scouts.
  19. There's really no such thing as a Webelos II, though. They are all just Webelos, and yes any eligible boy can be one whether he is advancing or not! I promised my son I wouldn't badger him about his reqs, and he received his Webelos badge about a month before his AoL, over a year after some of his friends. Thank you for being a positive influence in this Scout's young life!
  20. Only 4 boys are able to go on an upcoming trip. And of the 2 adults, 1 has to work Saturday morning... plans on attending the trip Friday, leaving for work early Saturday and returning to the camp Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend. Seeing as it's a council event and the Troop will be sharing a campsite with several adults from other Troops, is this okay??

  22. Our Pack meets once a month from Sept through May. Summer, 2 activities a month. Dens are scheduled by individual Den leaders as they see fit. My Webelos Den meets almost every Tuesday for 1 1/2 hr, we take off Nov and Dec instead of summer.
  23. Of course it's possible... invite away!
  24. Anita- please continue with your event. It's an important concept, not just an award.
  25. Hi all. Hope this posts, and I can figure out how to read any responses! My son just asked me if anyone knows whether there is a published record for 50-milers, as in how many has one Scout earned. I think he is interested in setting a record if there is one. Does anyone know any Scouts personally who have earned multiple 50s?? Also whilst I'm writing... any opinions on whether Zamberlan boots are worth the $$$ ?
