  1. This is were things get messy..

According to My Local Council there is not to be any one on one Communications with an Adult at any level.

Especially Electronically...If Emails are used then there has to be a CC sent to an adult also..

Even In OA I can not Email the Lodge chief without CC another member or Lodge Advisor.

As a Merit Badge Councilor I do not care who calls me about arranging the Secessions..

And Definitely a parent must stay also...2 Deep Leadership all the time..No Exceptions

  2. ""It hasn't been told directly, but everything I have been hearing tells me that I can do what I want, as long as I do it like it has been done.""

That sums it all up right there...

    3 Former SMs on Committee...

Sure you can use a Horse and Cart...just as long as you put the Horse before the Cart

Sure you can spin the Merry Go Round...it spins Clockwise

Have you heard also that you can have opinions as long as you keep them to yourself?

  3. This is what is taking the Fun out of Scouting...Confusing rules

I Consider My Den Members friends..

Can we go Camping as A Den..No because BSA has decided that As Wolves they can only go Camping when The Council makes the Money

Can we Go Camping as a Part of a Pack Overnight Yes.

However they say we can go family Camping and even rent a Camp Space at a Scout Camp..but It can not be "Structured". Explain in Plain Simple Terms "Structured". So does that mean if We Do not set Lights out it is Not "Structured"? Is It "Structured' with set meals times vs..you eat when you get Hungry?

If A Tiger/Wolf/Bear Den wants to go out and Camp and Earn Fishing Belt loop they Can't..But They Can when the Pack does it

If a Tiger/Wolf/Bear Den wants to Go Camping and earn hiking Belt Loop they Can't but as a Pack they Could

However if Each Individual Family happens to rent Camping Space from a Local Council on the Same Date...They could also, why because Scouts earn Belt loops and Sports Pins because A Parent can say they meet the RequirementRequirements for the Fishing Belt Loop Complete these three requirements:

Review your local fishing regulations with your leader or adult partner.

Explain why they are important, and commit to following them.

Demonstrate how to properly bait a hook.

    Try to catch a fish.

This just plain stupid..BSA is regulating itself into declining membership and failure..

Scouts Joins scouting to have fun but quit when They Can't

  4. I have My Differences with Leadership but relook at What you Wrote

    """

    The OA should be dissolved.

Here's what the OA has become:

    * Free labor for BSA to set up/take down summer camp at council scout camps

    * Native American cultural preservation (dancing, ceremonies, drums)

I see no other real activities from the OA than this. I've been in the OA for 40 years. I don't see that it serves any real purpose.

The OA does nothing to promote camping. The accuracy and appropriateness of native american cultural preservation is dubious. And BSA needing the OA sash as payment for helping clean up and set up campsites is questionable.

It no longer serves as an honor society. Everyone who gets first class or is an adult leader for a year expects to be made a member. OA has so much churn that without handing out lodge flaps to everyone with 12 months of membership, it wouldn't be able to operate.

Shut it down. The end. Write it off. It was a good idea. It was hijacked by BSA for labor. It was hijacked by the wacky Indian interest people as a social club. It has lost its way and adds no value to our country or to the mission of BSA.

(This message has been edited by BSA24)"""

That is Bad Mouthing it ain't disagreeing..

You do not have to be a member of OA to do Cheerful Service

I do not agree with all of OA nor BSA rules but I do not go around telling people they suck and need to be "Shut Down" or Dissolved. Maybe it is just you Lodge and your Council..I know Our Lodge does a lot of Stuff besides just put up and take down Council tents at summer camp.

I help several organizations by Volunteering without being a Member..I am sure your Council would appreciate some Cheerful service even if you were not a member of OA

  5. Well I sure wouldn't be a Member of something if I did not like it and I sure wouldn't be a member and Bad mouth the Organization at the same time..

I am a member because I believe in what OA Stands for even with its ups and downs. Even though it is still kinda Antiquated. I am a member because I want to be not because all my cool friends are members

Myself I have always believed that Females should be part of OA..

Any member of Any Portion of BSA should be Eligible for Membership..If Cub scouts and Explorers and Ventures are not Part of Boy Scouts then they should not pay dues and Fees to BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA if they are Separate..If Boy Scouts of America take Money then they should be Eligible for Memberships..Each Level can have its own requirements to accommodate memberships..

Scouting now more than ever has become a Family oriented organization..Today's Society Has Changed there is No Longer a Traditional Role for Females or Males. Families are divided to much and have very limited time to spend together..Why Not Embrace a Whole Scouting Experience where Cubs, Scouts, Ventures, Explorers are truly one..Each with Age Appropriate Activities.

And If anyone goes to a Real Native American Pow Wow you would realize that Women play a Larger Role in the Ceremonies than What you probably are aware of. There are plenty of Female Native American Dancers and Singers and Drummers..They ain't just EYE CANDY.

There is More to OA than just Dances and Ceremonies.. Native American Society was selected for OA because they were the Original Stewarts of Nature..They long Embraced the "Leave No Trace" methods of living, Wildlife Conservation, Respect for Nature and Wildlife. Native Americans have a long Tradition of Respecting the Elders of their Tribes..

  6. BSA24 Why are you still a Member of OA if you hate it so much..40 Years...????

Are they Beating down your Door and Stealing Money from you for Dues?

Amazing How everyone Says Cub Scouts and Venturing is not Part of Boy Scouts of America ...Yet It is The Boy Scout Local Councils who Collects their Registration Fees..Not A Cub Scout or Venturing Office

  7. I can only speak as to why I stayed in Scouting and returned to Scouting

The Core Values of Scouting...Those 12 simple words describe the people I want to be around

Doing a Good Deed Daily..and I still do..Manager at Walmart saw me simply returning Carts to the Cart Rack in Parking Lot. She Came over and asked Why I was doing it. I said out of Courtesy. A Few seconds go by and She Asks me "Were you A Boy Scout?".. I smiled and Said " Yes mam, I still am."

Friendship...Out of all the Programs I was Involved in Jr High and High School Scouts were the ones I bonded with the closest

Sense of Pride..I was never ashamed of wearing a Scout uniform because I am proud to represent an Organization that has a great history as a whole

Treated with Respect..Regardless of my experience I was always treated like an Equal..I was never treated like I was inferior..I never heard things like...Oh Let an Older scout do that because they are better at it..Oh Let a first class scout do that because they are trained for it..Your Taking to long let some one else do it that is faster...

School Sports and Other Programs your Participation is Based on Ability and they reject you if your Not in the Top Percentage or you get get to practice and Stand on the Sidelines will the "Stars" participate..

If a Troop is only Pushing Eagle on a Schedule I believe they will lose Scouts as soon as they turn Eagle..

Eagles should be Utilized in a Leadership Role..Teaching Merit Badges..Cooking, Pitching Tents, Writing Troop News Letters,

Keeping Eagles is no different than retaining an Scout..It is treating them with Respect

  8. The True Value in the Patch for me is "where and When" I traded a Patch..

Such as getting A Pikes Peak patch when I went there.

Trading for a Particular Patch at Philmont

    I am happy with a 1 for 1 trade

I value those more over a supposedly $2000 Patch.

I never intend on Selling my Patches so I would say grab every patch you can afford and store and trade.

Most it depends on what kind of Trader you are a 1 for 1 or a Profit Trader.

  9. No Girls at Summer Camp !!!

Our Council has had many girls on staff from time to time

We even had several British Exchange Scouts from England that were young Ladies...the Campers and Staffers did tend to Spiffy up More that year and Their MB Classes were the Fullest during the Secessions and they were the first to be requested to sit at Tables with during the Meals

  10. Yea we do tend to not realize the full effect someone has on us till after they have passed on.

Looking Back on my early years I reflect more on the true Leadership and influence of my Leadership now than I did then.

and I wish I could have more pictures and memorabilia to document those people in a Local Scouting Museum

  11. Yea Sid Richardson is a World away compared to Camp Perkins or Even Lake Arrowhead State Park just 15 minutes away..

Sid Richardson sits besides a 10,000 Acre lake.

Take a Look online at the Longhorn Council site

    http://www.longhorncouncil.org/Conf--Center.aspx

Wondering what their Yearly Revenue is compared to other Councils?

  12. The BSA's highest award was originally conceived of as the Wolf Scout, as shown in the June 1911 Official Handbook for Boys.

The August 1911 version of the handbook changed this to Eagle Scout. The medal illustrated in the handbook was a profile of an eagle in flight, but was changed to the current design before any were issued.

In their original conceptions, Life Scout, Star Scout (Life preceded Star until 1924) and Eagle Scout were not ranks, but part of the merit badge system that recognized Scouts who had earned a specified number of merit badges. Eagle Scout was awarded to any First Class Scout who had earned 21 merit badges. Consequently, eight of the first nine Eagle Scouts did not earn the ranks of Life or Star.

    RE: Small or large tents

    Posted: Saturday, 7/21/2012: 7:53:04 AM

Why in the world would a Boy Scout troop intentionally encourage and facilitate plop camping? The whole idea is to get the boys outdoors. With a giant heavy tent, you limit how far you can go.

If they really want to bunk together, they can go on a wilderness survival trek and build a patrol lean-to.

(This message has been edited by shortridge)

Again this is just a personal biased opinion..They poster stated they had appropriate tents for appropriate camping styles..

What encourages Plop Camping as you put is unavailability of Appropriate Camping Facilities...for your beloved style of Camping which so many Worship

I openly invite you to travel all the way to Camp Perkins here and Enjoy our Lustrous Camp and spend 14 days pack pack camping by Hiking around in Circles all day long...stopping to set up your fabulous small tents with cramped space and never end up more than 1/4 mile from where last night's Camp was....While us ploppers will be relaxed and still having more fun than you are..

I am Pretty Sure the Scouts are Not stupid and not Will hike the High Mountains and earn a 50 miler while Carrying 80 lb tents however if they do they deserve props for earning it...much more of an accomplishment than if they Carried 2 lb tents

  14. First and Foremost..

Boy Scouts of America is not a Sexual Education..

Our Mission is not to promote any Sexual Lifestyle..

    Heterosexual

    BiSexual

    Gay or Lesbian...

Nobody should be teaching any lifestyle..

BSA should be worried about any Leadership discussing it with any Youth member even 2 Deep Leadership...

We are not suppose to be sitting around the Campfire discussing our Sexual preferences with youths..

The Real problem in the World is that everyone is sue Happy..and every freaking time we turn around Someone is sueing on behalf of people who have no problem in the first place..no one speaks for Me except me.

  15. Which Silver Wolf?

    This One

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Silver_Wolf_Award.png

Since its inception by Robert Baden-Powell, the Silver Wolf has remained the "unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout" although "County Commissioners and overseas Chief Scouts may submit recommendations to Scout Headquarters."

During the early years of the development of the Scout Movement throughout the world, it was the practice of the Founder, Lord Baden-Powell, to give the Silver Wolf to Scouters in any country who had done outstandingly valuable work for the Movement. The Silver Wolf was first awarded to King's Scouts or King's Sea Scouts of at least 2 years service and who earned 12 proficiency badges who performed under exceptional circumstances like saving a life or repeated acts of Bravery, endurance, or self sacrifice. This Silver Wolf remained a Youth award until 1922 when it became an award for Adult volunteers for Services to Scouting.

The award was of course highly valued, but it began to be realized that the Silver Wolf was a British Scout decoration, even though it was given by the Chief Scout of the World. Accordingly in 1934 the Bronze Wolf award was created as the only award made by the World Scout Committee.

The Silver Wolf worn by Robert Baden-Powell is handed down the line of his successors.

  16. Feel free to Take a look at My Photos taken during Scouting Events at Camp Perkins and see why we would not have a hard time pitching Large Tents

These are just a Few Links where you Can see the Area well of Our Council's only Camp

  17. Scoutnut that sounds great in writing...

But you will notice several things..

First It mainly applies to Funds...Specifically Funds directly Solicited for Scouting..Not From Church Collection Plate passing on Sunday

and you will notice that it states that even if a Unit is disbanded the Charter Organization holds Equipment in Trust.

So a Church who buys a Camp Trailer owns the Trailer not the BSA.

A Charter Organization who buys tents owns them not the Local Council

Most of our Charter Organizations tend not to run Specific Scout Fund Drives..If a Troop around here needs money for stuff we have to ask for funds from the Charter Organization through our Representatives. We don't have Bank Accounts over flowing with Cash

  18. eisely wrote :I agree with the others that big tents are a poor choice. Apparently your troop does nothing but car camping. Even doing car camping, finding enough open ground to pitch a large tent can be a problem. Two man tents are clearly preferable.

Apparently I have no idea who your making that statement to, other than Apparently me because the Original Poster stated they they use small tents at appropriate times. Locally Yea our Troops do tend to "CAR Camp" because that is just about our Local Options. We are not blessed with wondrous scenery...Our youths tend not want to hike by the side of the Road nor do they want to Backpack in 100*+ in Full Sun.

Obviously Your State Parks and Camps differ from My Texas Area Parks.

At Camp Perkins our Local Scout Camp even a Blind Man could find enough room to pitch 100 20 x 30 GP Military Tents and Not Be close to each other..There is 1 Tree within the Established Camp site area.

eisely wrote : This mistake does not enganger anybody. It would merely cost money.

    Why is it a Mistake?

Simply because It does not meet your way of doing something?

Well Scouting is not a 1 Style fit all program. You are not giving the scouts a fair chance to prove themselves. Your assuming every single scout can not follow rules because You assume they automatically violate lights out. Why not make every scout bunk by themselves, that way we know there won't be no horse play at all at lights out. Make every scout miserable because you want them to be cramped in a Small 2 Man Tent..

I prefer to give each scout an opportunity to prove me right or wrong

eisely wrote :Having said all that, perhaps it would be best to let the boys live with their choice.

I will say I agree with that statement. Scouts tend to enjoy the program more if they enjoy it.
