  1. Did I miss the part where the article mentioned that the BSA initially owned the building and gave it to the city in consideration for the favorable lease terms? Without that critical piece of information, it looks like the city gave the BSA a sweetheart deal. The omission of crititcal data is either ignorance or bias. Whadaya' think?

  4. My highest adventure was to kayak the Grand Canyon. We took 3 rubber oar rafts, 4 kayaks and a C1. The rafts were piloted by semi-pros and carried all the gear, food, and yard dawgs. It took about 12 days to float out the bottom. We were passed by several motorized trips, but it was always a relief when they passed out of ear-shot. Does anyone know if private permits are still issued? Back in the '80s there was a two year wait.
  5. Thanks for the replies. Appologies for the thread re-direct. (The title did say 'CURTAIL') I'm actually a tad concerned that WB might discourage my interest in scouting. You see, I take pride in be politically INcorrect. Much of the PC BS that gets taken as fact, I like to tear apart. 'Diversity' as a goal does not interest me. (Nope, I'm not a bigot or a racist. You'd be very wrong to assume so.) Without youth present, there is a definite chance that I would use my college debate skills to destroy the wood badge curriculum, and ruin it for my classmates. But I really can't
  6. I think y'all may have curtailed my interest in Woodbadge. I'm being recruited to take Woodbadge, and I'm pretty sure that it's not worth six days of my life. With time being finite, I believe that those 6 days, plus ticket time, would be better spent with my pack and family. My resume: Eagle Scout at 15, commercial whitewater guide for 6 summers, NCO in 2nd Ranger BN, played in the corporate world long enough to see through Tony Robbins and appreciate Ken Blanchard. Now I've a son rising to Webelos I and I'll be CM for the next two years. I'll move through scouting with my son, an
  7. I always use an Army Surplus poncho liner: http://www.amazon.com/G-I-Style-Poncho-Liner-Woodland/dp/B000HP2C8Q They breathe, are thick enough to keep the bugs off, can be wrung to almost dry after being soaked, and are compressible enough to stuff into a cargo pocket on your pants. The only draw back is that they will slide off during the night, so I'll combine with a bag liner if it's cool enough.
  8. If the cubs are learning to tie people to trees, slap the CM's booty, and pee on trees; how long before they tie the CM to a tree and pee on him? This could take care of itself...

  10. And those tiny buffalos are hard to hit! I guess I knew that this might be playing football with the hornets nest, so if: "Scout units may plan or participate in paintball, laser tag or similar events where participants shoot at targets that are neither living nor human representations." has anyone ever played Laser Tag where you did NOT shoot at each other? What's the purpose of paintball if you don't get and give any welts? I was contemplating givng my students a take-home assigment to draw a target of their favorite tasty animal and we'd shoot it the next day. Political cor
  11. ScoutNut: Thanks for the reference, but nope. Guide to Safe Scouting - Unauthorized Activities: "Scout units may plan or participate in paintball, laser tag or similar events where participants shoot at targets that are neither living nor human representations." That keeps Scouts from shooting at Osama bin Laden faces; but it doesn't read to keep Scouts from shooting at Bear, Turkey, or Deer targets. A paper deer is neither living nor a human representation. Anybody else?
  12. Made you look! An informational blurb about Archery at Day Camp sent out to parents states: "BSA policies prohibit the use of targets resembling any living thing." I don't recall this topic ever coming up during certification. Myth or fact? Can someone point me towards a citation? Thanks, JoeBob
  13. Pioneering. Build a simple bridge from saplings and bailing twine. Day 1 - Plan and demonstrate - Work on Knots - Show 'em knotches for log cabin building. Day 2 - Work on trimming trees (Watch the blades - breaking small ilmbs might be better for the Tigers...) and sawing to length. Knot practice Day 3 - Start assembly - of 1 foot high bridge with up-ramps at each end. Day 4 - Finish assembly - Add rope Handrail Day 5 - Walk over their bridge.
  14. Chains are susceptible to bolt cutters; cables are not so easily severed.
  15. Your idea for pool paddling doesn't sound too bad. I'm not sure they'll learn much about the effects of J-stroke, a pry, bow-rudder or a draw if the tail of the boat is tied up; but it still sounds like a fun way to learn balance and brace. You might think about having the boys in the canoe wear helments. Bopping their head on the side of the pool while falling out would definitely hurt. I'll now leave you to the mercy of the rules police who will berate you about Safety Afloat training and the proper ratio of lifeeguards...
  16. If the CC's responsibilities include: "* Recognize the need for more dens, and see that new dens are formed as needed." how can the CM justify his claim to that decision?

  18. Any Canon Stylus, SureShot, or Nikon Coolpix, that fits in your pocket, will be just fine. The newer models will have good battery life. An extra battery for back country or cold weather is a good idea. 1- Do not get a DSLR (Detachable lens) They're too big. You won't have it with you when you need it. 2- Do NOT waste your money on a huge sensor. You'll wind up using only part of that potential, because the files can be huge. 6 megapixels is more than enough for 8x10 prints. You can grow old waiting on 600 meg TIFFs to load and open. 3- I buy 6 or 8 cameras a year for my work. (Prese
  19. Sleeping late is frequently the result of staying up late. He needs to learn that there is a price for whatever pleasurable activity he chose to enjoy the night before, instead of sleep. A trick to get 'em up is to dump a handful of cold BBs in their bag. The BBs roll to the lowest point, so the only way to escape them is to get out! I had a roommate that I used that trick on once. After that, just shaking a milk carton of BBs next to his head would levitate him.
  20. Gern: NASA funding certainly meets the founders' criterion of being for 'the common good' a lot more closely than taking over the health care industry.
  21. Cost of congress: "For Financial Year 2008 $4,330,451,000 has been requested - an increase of 14% from 2007." http://washminster.blogspot.com/2007/06/how-much-does-it-cost-to-run-congress.html Cost of NASA: "Its budget for the year 2008 was $17 billion. It makes up less than half a percent of the $3 trillion federal budget in the US. It takes up 35% of expenses for the entire scientific research costs in the US however." http://www.tellmehowmuch.net/how-much-does-nasa-cost.html NASA cost 4 times what congress costs. But since NASA is a net gain, and congress is a net loss; N
  22. Merylyn and BrklynEagle touched upon why I think we need to go to Mars. GPS. And other satellites. If the US does not target NASA at a specific goal, such as Mars, we risk being pushed out of space by the Chinese. A robotic killer satellite could disable or 'arrange to malfunction' our existing and future satellites. Then the Chinese could charge whatever fee they wished for us to have access to replacement Chinese satellite services. The US could never go to war against an entity that controls our navigation. Cruise missiles would miss their targets, airplanes would get lost,

  25. I've got a couple of those boys. No longer do I ask "Any questions?" Now I ask "Any intelligent questions?" I always try to have more activities than the time frame allows. That way if one of my troublemakers tries to take over the center of attention, I can bemoan whatever activity we're not going to have time for. The peer pressure, "Shut up so we can play SPUD!" works better than any threats I can make.
