  1. Studies can be altered BEFORE they are coducted. How do I know? I'm a doctor, I read enough studies to know. For example, if I want to show that left handed people had a particular trait, I ask the questions to guide the response I want. Bias plays a MAJOR role in studies. Double blind studies tend to be less so.
  2. It's not a slippery slope. Marriage isn't a civil right, it actually is a priviledge. You have to get a license to get married, that means permission. You have to right to worship as you wish, that's a right. I'm not advocating polygamy, mearing using the positin of Devil's Advocate here to show that if one group (gays) want their position legalized, another group may want their position legitimized. I'm tolerant of gays. Let them live together, do what they want, etc. Can't join BSA, Episcopals don't want them as priests, probably other groups don't either. Just quit ramming
  3. Sorry, the last time I drove through KY, I saw official highway signs pointing the way to the museum. A resonable assumption that it was still in KY.
  4. Here' my situation. I served 10 years in the Navy, 6 in the Navy Reserve and 8 in the Army Reserve. I retired in June of this year. I love my country, I continue to be on a stand-by list if needed and continue to be will to die for my country, and my flag. I know many soldiers serving in downtown Bagdad today. I told my wife when we got married that I had never been arrested. However, if I ever see someone dessecrate the flag, I would wind up in jail for beating the daylights out some SOB who did it. GWD, Yes, we usually hold flag raising and lowering ceremonies. I thanked t
  5. interesting comments, Packsaddle, I knew we could agree on some things. At the grade school level, teachers teach all subjects. Inhigh school, the History major should stick to teaching history, not math, unless maybe that person has a minor in math or relevant work experience or there is a shortage and is teaching math temporarily. The history major will likely know more about history than the average parent, but maybe not all parents. By the way, teachers should leave out "hisotry revisionism", you know, changing the 'perspective' to suit today's "poolically corect" agenda.
  6. Last year, my son did over $2,200 in popcorn sales by himself., 3 others in his pack sold over $1,000. Sure, people may buy from a cub or webelos scout before an older kid, because they're "cute", but selling is selling. If a unit is being threatened because they don't sell popcorn, sell some popcorn. Gather the unit for a day ong blitz in town and BAM, you've sold some popcorn. Maybe your unit won't sell the ost, but you sold some. Then, when your application to sell something else comes along, council will have no excuse.
  7. Welcome, I echo the comments about not allowing cots, shoes, food, standing in tents etc. Have scouts and adults pack their gear to be waterproof, you know, put things in Zip lock bags, waterproof the pack itself and leave the pack leaning against a tree. Put a heavy duty plastic bag over it and it too is water proof. I think Eureka makes the best tent. I've been using a Tetragon 7, (7ft x 7ft) a 3 man by design, but 2 fit. Fiberlgass poles have lasted well for 10 years, no tears, zippers work and still costs under $100. W A T E R P R O O F ! ! ! ! It 's also lightweight.
  8. Wingnut, John Lennon was indeed in a band, it was The Beetles. For what it's worth, Paul McCartney was also in a band before Wings, that too was The Bettles.
  9. FB, I don't regard opposing views with disdain or being without merit. I regard some of the views here with humor and utter disbelief. When the American public listens CD's and rock music (no rock music isn't the root of all evil), they aren't getting informed except what they get from left leaning newspapers, cnn.com, Saturday Night Live, Leno and Letterman. Get your news all of you, from a variety of sources, left, right, center and then learn how to pick out the fly dropping from the the black pepper. In other words, get informed. Katie Couric, and the rest are not giving you all
  10. One of the best ways IMO is to lead by example. If you wear your uniform correctly, others will see a good example. You don't need military creases and starch, but have all the patches in the right places, correct size and fit. When parents say to me that they won't buy the pants, that their kid can wear blue jeans instead, I ask the parent what sports the lad is involved with. Then they name ____ sport, let's say baseball. I suggest that next time junior goes to the baseball game, have him wear only the jersy. Then they say that the coach won't allow it. I ask them if it would be OK
  11. Very well, you folks are saying your TROOPS are doing Flag Retirements. With all the years I've been in scouts, we had NEVER done them. Okay okay. I still say the cubs are way too young. At the Flag Retirement I recently attended, cubs were squirming, talking, walking around, generally not interested or mature enough to know what was going on. Part of the problem was the poor campfire program, aside from the retirement, there really wasn't a program, a few kids with jokes, 2 lame songs.
  12. What sort of suggestions are you looking for? Changes to current uniform style? color? fabric? cut? patches?
  13. Parents are the ULTIMATE authority for child rearing. Parents have the right, duty and obligation to get that nonsense out of the schools. These types of books prove once again that the love that once dared not to speak its name is now the love that won't shut up. I submit that tolerance is indeed a virtue, but it seems that gays can't (and won't) be tolerant of heterosexualtiy. Schools should stick to teaching math, art, science, reading, etc. not their BS.
  14. Hastert just announced it. The reporter (and Soros) had it for about 3 or 4 years. I think in the end, Foley will go to jail.
  15. Fscouter, In the spring of 1940, FDR moved the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a deterrent to Japanes attack. Hawaii at the time was a territory of the US, much like Guam or American Samoa is today. Suddenly, and with provocation, we were attacked. Hmm, while minding our business in Hawaii, a US territory, how did that draw us into war with Japan? As I learned somehwere, for almost 20 years, the Japanese naval academy had asked its graduating students to present a plan to attack Pearl Harbor. It would seem that Japan wanted Pearl Harbor BEFORE we moved Pacific Fleet.
  16. Apparently Hastert points to Soros because Soros is funding the Democratic National Committee and democrat campaigns. Speaker Hastert has announced publicly that anyone on his staff who withheld info from him will be fired. So, I guess the 3 fingers pointing back at himself are taking responsibilty for himself and his staff, eh?
  17. AAAHHHhhh, I miss Chicago "machine" politics. Who would have guessed that the BSA would stoop to such attempts, but hey, vote early, and vote often. And remember, in Chaicago, the dead have as much right to vote as the next guy. Maybe we could in fact take the 'out' out of scouting when referring to National, and use "Boy Sc s of America" instead.
  18. SR540Beaver, You are right about timing, Sandy Berger took classified documents from the National Archives long after he was out of his Clinton Administration position. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. In appropriate timing is bad for both sides, shame on all who engage in it. I have heard (sorry, not read) some news about democrat financier George Soros having suppressed the Foley news until now. Shame on him and shame on any republican for doing the same. Please don't assume that I'm totin' someones water bucket. Treat them all the same, Like Sen Harry R
  19. No matter what the age, it's wrong for a congressman to do what he did. He should go and perhaps be tried for what he did. We don't need predators in congress. I'm sure one of our posters will find a reference to the number of congressional members who already have criminal records.
  20. Sure, the media will pounce, but they will crucify the republican and barely touch the democrat. I understand the "timing" of the information release is womehwat suspect also. That is, someone knew about this a few years ago and did nothing until now, a month before the election. Why would the reporter wait? To screw up the election.
  21. Hissy fit? The right pocket flap has traditionally been for the OA flap patch. It may not be stated in the regs, but that's where it goes. Optional temporary patches go on the right pocket and apparently on the back of the MB sash. Since whe does gettin' Totin' Chip get you a patch? Wasn't the card good enough?
  22. Also, remember a care pakage for him while he's gone. Some socks, t-shirts, drawers, cookies, magazines, a hometown newspaper, etc. Check with the wife for sizes. Only military issue t-shirts and drawers, the exposed part of the t-shirt must be the correct one.
  23. Thank you for the suggestions, I'll try them.
  24. FB - No possible way to win a religious war? Maybe you're right, but when the people are free and have democracy, they will be free indeed and then WE ( USA and their civilian population) win. Fightin' ghosts? no, we're fighting animals who refuse to "play by the rules" Before all you enemy lovers say that we don't, keep reading. The USA plays by the rules of war and ethics of war. We don't hide in hosptials, museums, places of worship, we don't transport combatants or weapons in ambulances, we don't hide in cemeteries or schools AND THEN SHOOT AS AMERICAN FROM THOSE PLACES like they ar
