  1. So what we have established is that some discrimination is okay if it provides for a greater good. $10 million a year to study why atheists suffer from depression would be okay but $10 a year to support BSA isn't okay. Interesting.

  3. Actually it is a matter of scale. Accoding to WOSM, Germany has about 124,000 scouts and scouters. That's about the size of one of our good sized councils, like Great Salt Lake or National Capital Area. It's not like your silent mail game. It might be more like Congress. Local issues get handled at the local level. The national committee doesn't have to worry about the food at Camp Googly-moogly being horrible, that will be handled locally. National board and committees worry about what impacts the organization as a whole. Yes, there are rungs and things don't make it up all

  5. The problem is that government has no business singling out the problems of one group over another. Private industry can do that quite effectively. If the government wants to study anyone, it should study everyone. After all, discrimination is discrimination.
  6. I might go seriously retro when the new uniform comes out and pull out my 1950s vintage dark green leaders uniform.
  7. "I found staying on the established trail to be the hardest one to drum into their little heads. There are lots of good reasons for it of course, but it is so...interesting...to see just what's "over there" off the trail." That's right. All of the interesting stuff is off the trail and hard to see unless you're close up.
  8. " The rest is another story by itself. Am I over-reacting in expecting more out of an eagle scout?" No but you're probably over-reacting anyway.
  9. Okay, "Leave nothing but footprints and buried poo and TP." Nope, that's not quite right. "Leave nothing but footprints, buried poo and TP, and dried up urine on a rock." :-)
  10. Those can be awarded at Camporees, troop events or anywhere else that you want to give recognition. There is a similar medal for Cub Scouts and we gave out to the top five popcorn sellers and the pack level Pinewood Debry winners.
  11. "Unitarian Universalism is indeed a religion, but it does not have a "doctrine," and saying Unitarians can believe "whatever they want" is a vast oversimplification." That's what my Unitarian friends tell me. "where people gather to nurture their spirits and put their faith into action " Sounds good but faith isn't required. "Not a very polite statement, and more than a little insulting" Ah, you must be one of those "unwelcome" unitarians.

  13. Of all of LNT's principles, packing out your used TP gives me the greatest heartburn. They make biodegradable TP for a reason and carrying around a bag of dirty toilet paper isn't very healthy. We make a fuss about "sanitize your hands before you eat" but then we're told, "Carry a bag of e. coli in your pack."

    Knot Me

Medal are saved for dress occassions (full size or miniature depending on the function) but they wear their ribbons far more often. The Army even wears some awards on their combat uniforms, the CIB and jump wings are two examples. Scouters wear their medals on formal occassions and wear the knots the rest of the time. If teachers had uniforms, they'd wear their awards. Why the crack about a Chilean general? Our generals wear enough ribbons for two people or is that different?
  15. I'll wait until my four existing shirts are worn out before I change.
  16. Unitarians are welcome in the BSA, it is just that their "religious" medal isn't recognized by BSA and so cannot be worn on the uniform. I'm not sure that Unitarianism is really a religion. All the Unitarians that I know tell me that Unitarian doctrine allows them to believe whatever they want including being an atheist. One of the funadmentals of a religion is that the adherents believe pretty much the same thing. However, Unitarians say that you can believe that life is a bowl of jell-o and I can believe that we live on the back on an ant. That's not a religion, that's a group of pe
  17. An extra $50 might make it unaffordable but even I could squeeze out $5. I fail to comprehend the logic behind asking volunteer instructors to pay $250 or more for the opportunity to teach. I served on the District Training Staff in my old district and all I had to pay for was $5 for my Training Staff neckerchief. I was fed and didn't have to pay to camp. If they had said, "GW, we'd like you to teach a class at Scoutmaster training and it will only cost you $200" I'd have said no thanks. Even at $50, I'd have said no thanks.
  18. We once had a science guy who kept the kids enthralled. Strange, the B&G is supposed to be for the adults but the entertainment is always for the kids.
  19. "Any advancement cards issued by the previous unit, MB cards(not blue cards, the award cards), rank cards, totin' chip etc." As a former advancement chair I'd have to say that the signed blue card is far more important. Just like the signed Handbook is more important than the rank card.
  20. Leave no trace is pretty simple. Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories. Even little kids can grasp that. As for the adults, ask them if they climb on the casket at a funeral home.
  21. Back in my Cub Scout days, we would have rejected the car. Everyone was given a set of the rules for the district races. The Cub Scout and parents were expected to follow the rules. Not letting Johnny race his car that is too heavy or has special wheels may make him feel bad but what about the other boys who KNOW that Johnny won because he cheated and we let him cheat.
  22. Emphasize the kilt. I want to go to Wood Badge so I can join the MacLaren Society and wear a kilt.(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  23. "The mission of the Center for Minority Health (CMH) is to improve the health and wellbeing of racial and ethnic minority populations by eliminating health disparities as defined in Healthy People 2010." That's right from their website. There's no government checkbox for Polish, Irish, Jewish, etc.. Only white (non-hispanic).
