  1. Another link to the same story: http://www.nbc4.tv/food/4005836/detail.html Scouts ACLU Popcorn Sale Hits Jackpot RICHMOND, Va. -- Some Boy Scouts in Virginia decided to take a jab at the American Civil Liberties Union -- and found it more than worth their while. Troop 828 set up a booth in downtown Richmond Wednesday to sell popcorn outside the state ACLU headquarters. The ACLU has raised legal questions about government sponsorship of the Boy Scouts of America, because the group requires its members to believe in God. The scouts got an unexpected boost from nat
  2. Has anyone seen "This Boy's Life", a 1993 movie starring Robert DeNiro, Ellen Barkin and Leonardo DiCaprio? I've never seen the movie, but I've seen some pictures from the film that show DeNiro and DiCaprio in uniforms that look similar to (but not exactly like) Boy Scout uniforms of the 1950s. If you've seen the movie, is Scouting part of the plot?
  3. I have "Scout's Honor" on VHS (bought used on Ebay), a comedy starring Gary Coleman about a Cub Scout Pack and their den mother (Katherine Helmond). Another Cub Scout comedy: "The Wrong Guys" about a reunion of former Cub Scouts and their mis-adventures. This is available from most sources on DVD.
  4. Eamonn, I will also be at Jamboree, at the Episcopal Church Relationships booth / tent. I'd love to meet you, Bob and any other Forum members who will be in the neighborhood. Please stop by and visit, or let me know where you will be. If you want to write me offlist, I am at: fgoodwin at sbcglobal dot net Meet me at the Hill! 5. According to the Supreme Court, BSA policies do not violate the Constitution. So how can the ACLU claim that school or military sponsorship of a group that does not violate the Constitution, then violate the Constitution?
  6. The conflict will go away as soon as ACLU decides to stop harassing BSA. BSA is fully within its rights to set its membership policies. So why should schools and military bases be sued by the ACLU for sponsoring Scout units that are doing nothing illegal?
  7. But why isn't ACLU defending the Constitutional right of BSA to set its own membership? Don't you find it the least bit hypocritical of them that they claim to defend civil liberties, yet take every chance they can to launch collateral attacks against BSA by harrassing its unit sponsors?
  8. The issue isn't "who started it". The issue is litigation and who has the power to stop it. Clearly, we cannot force the ACLU to stop harassing us. Only they can make that decision. And make no mistake -- the ACLU files suit against the military, against schools, etc. solely to harass BSA because of BSA's membership policies, polices which are fully protected under the Constitution. As someone else asked under a different thread: if ACLU is so darned concerned about Constitutional rights, why aren't they defending ours? Why do they continue to harass us? You and I both know
  9. We (Scouts & Scouters) didn't choose to make a fight out of this -- the ACLU can stop this anytime they want to. But they have a vendetta against BSA which is obvious to the most casual observer. They won't stop until they destroy BSA, or make BSA bend to its will.
  10. Thanx for the cite to the training syllabus; I checked the SM Handbook, and "activity" uniform is in fact mentioned on p.157.
  11. Eamonn, I understand what you're saying, but I thought the question asked for an "official" reference to such nomenclature. As far as I can tell, there are no official sources that refer to "field" and "activity" uniforms. All the documentation refers to the "uniform", period. Of course, I don't claim to have seen or read everything, either.

Somewhere I have a copy of the official instructions that came with the white leggings. If I can find it, I'll scan it and email to anyone who wants it. You can write me at fgoodwin at sbcglobal dot net
  13. I've never seen a Canadian campaign hat, but if it is like the British campaign hat, people will be able to tell immediately it isn't official. The reason is the indentations. The American campaign hat has its indentations off by 45 degrees compared to the British campaign hat. In other words, where our hat is "full" up front, over the forehead, the British version has an indentation. This might affect how you place the hat pin.
  14. I didn't realize the full article had already been posted under the "Stuffit" thread when I posted mine -- sorry about that.
  15. Wear whatever is comfortable -- neither jacket constitutes part of the official "uniform". I tend to wear the blue windbreaker; I don't think the color clashes any more or less than the blue tabs on my tan shirt. I also have a red jac-shirt and wear that on occassion also. So far, no one on the Boy Scout side has ever told me I couldn't wear it simply because I'm a Cub Scouter!
  16. Easy: there's the "uniform" and there's "everything else". This crap about "Class A" and "Class B" is a carryover from the military -- you'll find no mention of "Class A" or "Class B" in the Insignia Guide. There is no mention of "Class A" or "Class B" in chapter 12 of the Cub Scout Leader Guide ("Uniforms and Insignia"). A Scout is either in uniform or he isn't. Why muddy the waters?
  17. KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Boy Scouts of America leaders in Europe say they are having little trouble finding new, private sponsors for their troops after a legal settlement ordered military units to sever official ties with the scouting program. Scout masters and regional leaders said veterans organizations such as the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and local unit booster clubs have stepped in as troop sponsors, Dan Adams, executive director of the BSAs Transatlantic Council, said Wednesday. Weve got an incredible amount of support from the military structure here, said

  19. If not for Cub Scouts in Houston, Army Spc. Joseph Lowit would find it next-to-impossible to celebrate Hanukkah. As part of a service project, Pack 1190 from Congregation Emanu El prepared care packages with Hanukkah candles, menorahs and dreidels -- giving Lowit and 150 other soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait a way to mark the holiday. "Thanks to them I can, and I am very grateful," wrote Lowit, a 26-year-old infantryman from Miami who is the only Jewish soldier on his base in Iraq. http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/06/hanukkah.soldiers.ap/
  20. SWScouter writes:First, a girl earns the religious awards of her faith as a Girl Scout. If she then joins venturing, can't she wear the knot on her venturing uniform? Next, she becomes an adult and volunteers as a Scouter. Can't she now wear the knot on her uniform? It was my understanding that in both cases she could.Correct, according to the Uniforma and Insignia Guide: page 3, under Special Regulations, "Badges of other Organizations." "The Boy Scouts of America recognizes the religious emblems program, which belongs to each faith group. Anyone (youth or adult) who, as a member o
  21. WWBPD writes:I am just trying to get the list of the BSA's Rules and Regulations. If they cannot be provided then either they do not exist, or someone is not sharing. That's crap and you know it. Nobody is "hiding" anything from you. But if you want everything organized in one nice little binder, that's not gonna happen. If you all are telling me that the rules and regulations of the BSA are imbedded in the millions pages of literature that the BSA produces about its Program, then I want to know why it has been made so difficult for someone that just wants to volunteer their time to help a boy
  22. It doesn't matter what anybody says, you'll come up with something else. So what's your point, WWBPD?

  24. chipmunk writes:This site has some stuff on "traditonal" scouting but I cannot tell if it is BSA or not. http://www.inquiry.net/That's Rick Seymour's "Inquiry.net" website, and it is very good. 25. packsaddle: you need not post the actual requirements; I'm sure if UUA charges for the workbooks, they would not appreciate the requirements being posted for free. But I doubt if there would be any problems if you posted only the changes; I think its a "fair use" to publish portions for purposes of education and discussion.
