  1. Actually, I personally think that (if you can afford it) you get an extra shirt (or 2!) so that you can wear the insignia of the job you're currently performing at a particular event. For instance, I wouldn't come to a Pack Meeting as Cubmaster wearing my COR shirt, nor would I go to an ECOH for one of my Troops wearing my Cub leader uniform. Likewise, if I go to Roundtable and a bunch of the District scouters and commissioners are wearing their unit numerals and unit POR's, it does IMHO make it a bit confusing if you don't know all the scouters already. (And yes, I realize that
  2. I honestly don't think that BSA thinks that hard to even consider stuff like you suggest. 129 is just the number they stopped at. I mean 23 different electives is an odd number, just like 47 (or whatever belt loops). In the Bear year, the calculation is completely different because of the mix and match nature of achievements and electives...you need to do some deep thinking to figure out the maximum number of arrow points! I do hear you that the symmetry is nice on the arrow points! (My son has 6 silvers for both Wolf and Bear years. Coincidence?!? :-) To paraphrase Popeye: "
  3. I'm a COR for 5 units (2 packs, 2 troops, and a crew), but even if it were just one, I'd still wear silver. Just my preference, though, just becase silver is always an appropriate color regardless of the type or quantity of units you represent. In my perfect, rose-colored-glasses world, all CORs would be uniformed the same...silver loops, no unit numeral, COR patch. Of course, if you're only a COR for a troop, then I see no problem using the new green loops, unit numbers, and the COR patch, too. Or blue loops if for a pack. I've looked and there's nothing "official" that I can fin
  4. - Absolute number one thing is trained, enthusiastic den leaders who make things fun and meet on a very regular basis with their dens. - Communication with parents as much as possible to set expectations early and often that in Tiger and Wolf and Bear years, that this is a Family advancement program and they are expected to crack the books and work with their boys. Lay out the expectation for badges being awarded (no boy likes to be left out when the other get theirs), and emphasize slow-and-steady progress throughout the year. If you set a schedule where parents should get achievement
  5. Yeah, our typical schedule is: - end of January: Arrow of Light for Webelos II and crossover to Boy Scouts. Maybe Webelos badge for Webelos I. - February: B&G ... we typically don't do advancement - March & April: Tiger, Wolf, Bear badges when ready - May: last pack meeting. Tigers, Wolves and Bears get their new neckerchiefs, slides and books for the summer and following year along with their new service stars and attendance awards. We have a nice ceremony and a wodden bridge that all the boys walk over and are presented their new gear on the other side.
  6. How's this... Oh Leo Lion, Oh Leo Lion, Why did you escape from the zoo? Oh Leo Lion, Oh Leo Lion, Why did you escape from the zoo? You had fun as you travelled far Then got squashed under a car. Oh Leo Lion, Oh Leo Lion, Why did you escape from the zoo?
  7. - Didn't mean for my last post to sound like I was criticizing your event...just that BSA is recognizing that parents aren't as involved in many cases for many reasons anymore, and that that's unfortunte. - In our Council, we'd need District/Council approval in order to do anything that includes multiple packs. - The hardest part about your event would to make sure that all the stations pretty much lasted about the same amount of time without losing the boys' attention. Just like with Pack and Den meetings...no down time if you can avoid it. Encourage whomever is running the s
  8. "Your removing the family out of family scouting." So is the BSA.... http://www.scouting.org/CubScouts/FastTracks.aspx Even though the video/presentation still mentions "trial program", all that wording is now gone from scouting.org. Unfortunate, but true.
  9. Welcome to another Nutmegger! (I grew up in Milford) Excited is good...overwhelmed will pass (eventually!)...
  10. Sarge- While Wolves, they only work out of the Wolf books. No Bear books at all until they graduate 2nd grade (same as no Webelos until graduated 3rd grade, no Wolf until graduated 1st grade, etc..). In our Pack, we present the new books at the last Pack meeting of the school year so boys who want to can get a head start over the summer. After the Wolf badges are done, then electives and arrowpoints are good or you can work on other awards that the boys may be interested in (Leave No Trace, World Conservation Award, Emergency Preparedness, belt loops, etc...) or JUST HAVE FUN (fiel
  11. The Insignia Guide says that all temporary insignia are "worn centered on the right pocket and must not exceed the dimension of the seams of the pocket, nor extend higher than the lowest tip of the pocket flap." (See http://www.scouting.org/media/insigniaguide/03.aspx). If you were to center the Whittlin Chip on the right pocket, it might look a bit silly because of the shape, but perfectly OK according to the Insignia Guide. The Cubs in my pack tend not to put things on the right pocket since all the bead holders and compass point emblems just cover over them anyway.
  12. Yes, exactly. In my last post, I guess I should have made clear that my Uniform Police siren was going off when I walked down the hall past all those pictures! Regarding BSA literature, web sites and books with incorrect or impossible uniforms (i.e Wolf scout with a Bear badge on): that's always been a peeve of mine. Given the number of non-Scouters involved in a photo shoot, publication and editing (not to mention the small number of actual Scouters that double-check the Insignia Guide), I guess it's inevitable that mistakes will be made.
  13. Where I live, I'm within 35 miles of 3 different Council offices and Scout Shops. At one of them, there's a wall of pictures of Eagle scouts from the Council. The majority of the Eagles have the Totin Chip on their uniforms on the LEFT pocket flap above their Eagle badge/medal.
  14. Wrong. The Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award patch most certainly goes on the FLAP of the right pocket. It's the only patch that a Cub Scout can put there. The Whittlin/Whittling Chip patch does NOT go on any flap according to the Insignia Guide (regardless of the shape of the patch). Put it on a patch blanket or vest.
  15. Also, no more "Fair and Balanced" for you either...New York is pretty blue, you know.
  16. Well, King Fish...looks like you need to find another forum to post to...I'm pretty sure that the "owner" of this site voted for Obama. Every one of the ads from the sponsors generates revenue, you know. See you later...
  17. If you go to http://www.thescoutzone.org/locator.html and enter your zip code (00703, I think), then you'll see all the Boy Scout troops near you. There are 7 troops in Caguas, which is only about 6 miles from your town: Troop 343 Columbia College Troop 98 Huertas Junior College Troop 313 Colegio Bautista De Caguas Troop 777 Iglesia Defensores De La Fe Bet-El Troop 230 Comite de Padres Troop 1001 Academia Cristo de los Milagros Troop 1167 Notre Dame High School Here is the contact information for your local Boy Scout Council: Puerto Rico Council GPO Bo
  18. Yeah, Kahuna, the numbers are conflicting. If you look at http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/data/turnout.php or http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0781453.html or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2008#Grand_total then you'll see a 148 million number for turnout, even though the same pages only have about 121 million votes for Obama + McCain combined. Not sure where the other 27 million votes went.
  19. I'm a sucker for quizzes...here's one that covers items from the primaries and general election. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27487258/ I scored 75%. A custom patch (and a square knot) will be made up for all those who score 100%. :-)
  20. Instead of "No awards before Bobcat", it's more accurate to say "No rank awards (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos badges) before Bobcat". Anything else (Tiger paw & beads, belt loops, etc..) is fair game and can be awarded when earned.
  21. 1) Porta-potties: no problem there. That's what our Council's cub scout Family Camp has. Pit latrines without running water are the norm at the local state parks that are used for campouts. 2) Potable water: doesn't matter if you bring your own or not...potable water is potable water. For a single night, all you'll need is drinking water, food prep and cleanup water (depending), and a handwashing station. If you're having a campfire, then also water for that (potable or not). Shouldn't be a problem to bring in 5-gallon jugs of drinking water to suit your purpose. 3) regarding
  22. You can read his full court filing at http://youthscouts.org/WrennvBSADistCourtComplaint.pdf The relevant section is on page 2 and states: "Plaintiff founded Youthscouts as an unincorporated non-profit organization in 2002 when his daughter was denied the right to become a member or even a "shadow" member of her twin brother's Cub Scout troop, operated by a local council chartered by the BSA. Plaintiff's daughter had tried membership in the local Girl Scouts of America organization but was not interested in its program or activities. Thus Plaintiff and his daughter decided to form
  23. Welcome to the boards. I was born and raised in Milford and did my cubbing back when it was part of the Quinnipiac council.
  24. veering way off topic... "Fish heads, fish heads, Roly poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up - yummm. Roly poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women." I miss the smogberry trees...
  25. Check out the relatively recent threads about Laser Tag .... http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=194890 http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=179232 It should answer your question about whether it's prohibited or not.
