  1. And this is the crux of the issue. I attended Finland's national jamboree last summer, and it was a sad moment when I realized it was cheaper for me to fly over to Finland, attend the jambo (as a participant--Rover age), and fly back than attend our own after transportation costs. Their fee was only about $400. Toss in $1000 for flights and $100 for incidentals and you're only a couple hundred above the registration fee alone for ours. Plus, you know, you get to go to Finland. Heck, just this week I got back from the 1st Africa Rover Moot in Kenya, all in I was about $1600. Also, $1200 fo

  3. It really is a lot. My daughter is going and I am an adult leader from our council so between the two of us it was a large total cost. It will be a different experience for her (and likely her “last big thing” in Scouting since she’s getting into other things as a high schooler now) but it did make me sad that cost was obviously going to be something that kept a lot of people from going. I did decide that this year my donation to scouting was to the fund to help defray the cost of folks going (though the amount I could donate wasn’t going to even make a huge difference for one person, which

  5. The issues that BSA faced were caused by cover ups, secret files and the want to keep everything that was happening covered up to not damage BSA when fundraising. It was not caused by lawyers representing claimants. So you are saying that Child Sexual Abuse is just part of the larger human and race and compensating victims/survivors for the hell that they went thru and live with is ridiculous? So, if the average payout to a BSA survivor of CSA ends up at $30,000 each that is a ridiculous amount? You are correct about most of the rest of the world such as India where there are gang r

  6. I agree. Also, it would help address borderline units where the unit has a low number of boys or a low number of girls. Critical mass of numbers is so so important in scouting to make it a fun program.

  7. IMHO. at just two pages, the Report to the Nation is brief to a fault. No financial information or list by name of National Board and Committee members as in years past. No mention of Youth Protection. No mention of BSA professionals. No mention of leaving bankruptcy (seems a significant "proceedings" to report) No mention of upcoming National Annual Meeting (also required by Charter) No photos. Of the "more than 28,384 participants went on treks at the BSA’s four national high-adventure bases: Philmont Scout Ranch, the Summit Bechtel Reserve, Sea Base,

  8. I wouldn't put too much on feedback from someone that hasn't been part of Scouting for at least 50 years. It's been half that for me and I couldn't tell if you if was fun anymore. The proof will be in the pudding: does Scouting thrive compared to today's alternatives.
