Armymutt
My son is attending his first troop summer camp. I'm going along as an adult leader. I was unable to attend the meeting tonight where summer camp was discussed. My wife, with zero camping experience, sent me a text telling me that the CC wants all the campers to purchase and pack a footlocker for camp. This is new to me. In my day, we didn't pack a whole lot of gear for camp. These Scouts aren't even sleeping in tents - the camp has shelters with bunk beds. I plan to sleep in my own tent, but it will fit on my backpack. Is this the new normal for Scouting? Do Scouts now need more than just a sleeping bag, a few changes of clothes, and a flashlight for a week at a council camp?
Tron
I am thinking, shelters with bunk beds + want foot lockers = mouse problem.
Jameson76
Our troop uses these, about $30. EVERYTHING needs to fit in the trunk. They show up for camp with a trunk and a daypack for the trip to camp. Helps with packing and moving goods to site. Can be used in tents (camp has the 2 person platform tents), keeps things dry if they actually close it, can be a table a seat, etc.
Arkie
We ask Scouts to get these at The Home Depot for around $10 for trips to summer/winter camp and other extended trips. 27 gallon size. They stack nicely in the trailer for easy transport/access.
mrjohns2
The midwest camps I’ve attended don’t “do” footlockers. It is a “funny”, to me, regional thing.
DuctTape
Strange to me too. Everything in the backpack for all trips all year.
SSScout
"It depends".... Nat Jamboree, 2013, they issued nice offishul duffles as part of the deal. Staff (Chaplain), I brought a foot locker, but discovered it would not fit in the tent with the cot they issued/assigned. We Adapted ... As SM, to summer camp, I brought one to help organize my stuff and stuff and stuff,,, The Scouts were not required , some had duffles, some had small locker/boxes.... If the dimensions are known, to slip it under the cot, that is good. If there is room at the end(s) of the cot and still stay in th tent, that is good. Where will it be? In the halcyon days of my yooth, everything was in the backpack or we didn't need it. Then too, we didn't have TRAILERS full of stuff....
Armymutt
I grew up in the Midwest too. I just can't see needing that much stuff for a week of camp. They need less stuff than we needed for some of my camps - shower facilities and dining hall are provided. No one needs to bring a stove, pots, eating stuff, solar shower, etc.
Arkie
Certainly, to each their own. In our case, we usually travel a few-to-several states away for summer camp, so there are multiple days on the front and back side of camp week.
