Very true, there has been numerous schisms in UK Scouting. The British Boy Scouts which broke away in 1909 was initially very successful and for a time looked like it might become the dominant force in Scouting. Interesting. I'm actually glad that The Scout Association has never taken legal action against the other smaller UK associations (BPSA, BBS, FSE). Although their methods may differ, their aims are the same and I consider them fellow Scouts. In the district where I do my Scouting we have one Scout Troop that is run by a gay couple who're in a civil partnership, another group has a a transgendered leader. There's probably other that I am not aware of. I've known of leaders to be dismissed for criminal offences and for having an affair, but never for their sexuality. All adult leaders in the UK are checked against the Criminal Records Bureau, and are interviewed by the district warrants committee before they can take up their position. Moosetracker I believe your Venture section runs from 14-21yrs. If the BSA truly views these young people as being asexual, then I would suggest they've either forgotten what it was like being an adolescent or they're slipping bromide in the drinking water.

SeattlePioneer. As far as I can find, the only ban the BSA has against homosexuals is as adult leaders. So surely American Scout leaders are already dealing with gay Scouts? Of course I'm also impressed that the BSA has such an abundance of leaders that it can discriminate against potential candidates.(This message has been edited by Chug)

As a UK Scoutleader I find this thread quite amusing. Do some people here really think that a young person who is just realising that his/her sexual orientation doesn't fit with societies norms is really going to choose a crowded tent to make a move on someone of the same sex? I think this is more to do with newspapers trying to make a story than any problem with Gilwell.

The Euro is a fundamentally flawed currency. They've tried to shoehorn together vastly different economies, working on different economic cycles. Interest rate are set by the European Central Bank, and can't be adjusted by individual countries to suit their needs. Outside of the Euro Ireland could have increased interest rates to cool its overheating housing market, inside this wasn't an option available to it.

For years I resisted buying a Thermarest, I thought they were weakening to moral fibre or quite possibly Communist. I only bought one two years ago after freezing my arse off on a winter camp, and I have to say I'm a complete convert. If you think Thermarest's are a tad pricey (they are), there are plenty of cheaper alternatives on the market.

Here in the UK the Scout Association does a thorough Criminal Records Bureau check on all prospective new adult leaders, also local districts hold warrant committee's to question the applicant on their reasons for wanting to join.

I couldn't believe the faux outrage in some parts of the British press (Daily Mail). Bear never claimed that he was on his own during filming, I would have thought it was obvious to anyone watching that he had a camera crew with him.

Bear has said that his Born Survivor/Man Vs Wild show is a "How to" rather than him being in actual trouble. He's done things with his life that most of his critics wont achieve in 10 lifetimes. He is extremely enthusiastic about Scouting, and takes his role as Chief Scout very seriously.
