  1. Yep, I am choosing to drive 35 minutes each way to a neighboring district so that my daughter can join the only Pack in the entire council that is an early adopter. None in my district. I hear rumors that there will be pack next school year for regular enrollment but will have to wait and see.
  2. Neither as of yet. She earned it but was not presented it.
  3. Webelos, but of course she has to earn her Bobcat before she can do anything else.
  4. Boy did I ever derail this thread. Back on topic, my daughter earned her Bobcat last night.
  5. The black necker is pretty fancy too! Is that their patrol patch on their hat? I really liked the distinct maroon beret (airborne) I wore in the military and was a little saddened when the Army put everyone in a black beret - at the cost of the Ranger's distinct headgear (they now wear brown - which would have made more sense for the general Army IMO). What is the rule or guideline on shiny or subdued necker slide? Does above or below the collar matter? I might have to drag out my old beret and see if it is something my PL son thinks his patrol might like to adopt - or so
  6. If I wanted to sell my firearm, how would I know if they are a prohibited person? I don't know how to do my own private federal background check - or if it is even possible for a private citizen to do so. The so-called "gun show loophole" does not require me or anyone in the secondary market (e.g. private sales including some of those at gun shows), know really anything about the purchaser. Not that it would have made a difference in this specific instance.
  7. I don't personally see it as weird, but unless we replace it with "something" then just "Scouts" is potentially more awkward when we consider the fact that there would be "Girl Scouts" and girls "Scouts." Perhaps replace "boy" with some synonym for "outdoors." Maybe "Wilderness" or "Woodland." I am personally fine with leaving it just the way it is (many professions have dropped their gender specific suffixes for the male or non-gender specific titles - like actor/actress, steward/stewardess became flight attendant), and clearly those girls that have expressed interest in joining have not
  8. My daughter will be attending her first Cub Scout meeting in a few weeks. She is currently a Girl Scout and plans to remain active in both. She is so geeked to be a Cub Scout that she has been using her tablet (we don't have any of the books yet) to research Bobcat requirements and she has asked her older Boy Scout brother to help her study so that she can earn her Bobcat at her first meeting. On an unrelated tangent, my son built his improvised natural shelter over the weekend for his Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. He plans to sleep in it next weekend. <-Proud papa.
  9. http://councils.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf As a merit badge counselor, I agree to • Follow the requirements of the merit badge, making no deletions or additions, ensuring that the advancement standards are fair and uniform for all Scouts. • Have a Scout accompanied by his buddy during all instructional sessions. • Keep my Youth Protection training current. • Renew my registration annually if I plan to continue as a merit badge counselor.
  10. Well, they are required to keep their YPT current as well as re-register every year so either they are still active or your list has not been updated. My guess is that your list likely has not been scrubbed recently (or perhaps longer). You should see some people fall off every year if for no other reason than they forget to reregister or complete their YPT as required. Can't happen if your district is maintaining their list correctly. No one should be on that list that does not have a current YPT or that has hasn't registered in the last year. You might want to ask someone
  11. And I am with you on that aspect. But, I would hate to limit your options by forcing non-scouters to attend an in-person class. I can imagine that there are at least a few merit badges my son would not have earned (or be working on) if his MBC had to attend an in-person class. You mentioned that in your council, the MBC list is long but what about per district? I know in my district, we don't have a counselor for every MB. Even when we have one in the district, there are those MBC who will ONLY work with their local troop. And of course no one wants to have to visit another district just
  12. Well, unless you are proposing we ban magazines that can hold more than 8 rounds, magazine capacity will continue to be relevant. Additionally, the time required to change a mag and acquire target is not insignificant and it adds a significant decrease to the ROF. You are also vulnerable to attack and being disarmed while reloading. Rem 740 holds 4 rounds so I would assume the ROF to be significantly less than even the M1. Probably 20-30 rounds a minute. No major disagreement, but my gut tells me that if the shooter was armed with your Rem 740, even an unarmed bystander or two cou
  13. The MBC training is put out by National, not council. You can (and I did) take it from https://my.scouting.org/
  14. Rate of fire on an M1 is 40-50 rounds a minute and as you eluded to, can only carry 8 rounds. AR-15 rate of fire is 90-120 rounds a minute and can carry 30-round magazines. No way a person with an M1 could be as intentionally lethal as the same person with an AR-15. The person with the AR can fire 30 rounds before the person with the M1 can fire 9 rounds. Agreed, but much like reckless driving is the fault of the driver and not the car driven, the lethality of car accidents is very much dependent on car design and safety features.
  15. Can you not take the class online and complete the application to become registered or will the council ignore/decline such submissions? Seems like requiring an in-person class, especially for individuals that are not registered volunteers (e.g. professionals that are simply wishing to help their local community by being MBC for their area of expertise), would significantly reduce the applicant pool.
  16. If anything, that would (or should) be incorporated with the existing Skating Merit Badge. Just add a 4th option to the existing list of three (ice, roller, in-line).
  17. What you want is called a "shadow box." Typically, these have some depth to them (1.5 to 3 inches) so you don't have to press the uniform flat as you might with another sort of display. Shadow boxes come in a number of shapes and sizes (and quality). I made one for my father when he retired from the military. I also made one for my son when he crossed over to boy scouts. Something like these: https://www.target.com/p/distressed-12x15-black-shadow-box-gallery-solutions/-/A-53023155?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Home+Decor+Shopping&adgroup=SC_Home+Decor&a
  18. And probably by a good number of your class attendees as well.
  19. "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." It also doesn't say there isn't a relationship between those that are born with two eyes and those that commit crimes but I bet the correlation is higher than those that use drugs and commit crimes. Because the study doesn't say it doesn't exist, we might want to start poking out everyone's extra eye based on that absence of evidence. We can clearly infer that there is a correlation between having two eyes and crimes. Good thing correlation isn't the same thing as causation.
  20. To clarify, that study doesn't state what you think it does. The study did not try to determine "crime related to drug use." That study simply determined that people arrested had drugs in their system at the time of their arrest. That doesn't mean that they smoked pot and while high, decided to car-jack someone. Correlation is not causality. As your link stated, if they tested individuals arrested for crimes for having consumed water in the last 24 hours, such would not mean that 100% of crime is related to water consumption. More likely the study suggests that individuals with the p
  21. Do they? What proof of that is there? What is specifically different about those scouts? Absent the gender issue, what new types of male boy scouts do you think BSA is trying to get? Of the actual program changes made in the last few years, I think all of them have been to strengthen the traditional aspects of scouting, not to weaken them. National BSA doesn't control your local camp experience. No one obligates you to even use your local camp if they fail to live up to your ideals. Pick a different one if you don't like it - or ask them to better represent what scouting should be
  22. OK, but then your daughters are not likely signing up for Boy Scout summer camp. It is fair to assume that anyone that does so, self-selects because they do enjoy the same things about camp. In this way, Boy Scout camp need not really change. The girls that want to join and attend camp are self-selecting for the sort of activities that we already offer. This isn't like a summer Y camp that has to try and appeal to everyone with all interests.
  23. How so, can you elaborate? The "entire experience?" I think of the activities my son has had at Boy Scout camp and I can't think of a single thing about his experience that would have changed in any meaningful way. Hiking, just the same. Rappelling, just the same. Campfire activities, just the same. Religious service, just the same. Kayaking, Totin' Chip, Woodcarving, Horsemanship, Wilderness Survival, Rifle Shooting, again just the same. All camps are not made alike so perhaps the activities at your local camp are different but even after having gone
  24. My assumption is that it is cultural. My son indicated he would be fine with his sister in scouts and there are two other fathers of daughters who also have sons in my son's patrol and both of them indicated they were strongly on-board with the change - yet my female cousin, who was Scoutmaster for a troop in another state, along with my other female cousin (same state as the Scoutmaster), strongly objected to the change. I used to live in their state so I can understand why culturally it would be less acceptable to change gender norms in this manner. I probably would feel that way too if
  25. I don't necessarily disagree, but where do you draw the line? All of my local grocery stores sell liquor and cigs. Do we prohibit scouts from fundraising in front of (or inside of) such businesses? We also fundraise at sporting events where alcohol is served (and where pot is consumed), do we avoid those locations as well? I would not likely have made the same choice as this father and daughter but I also have difficulty passing judgment on them when I consider the fact that the store is legal in that state. It doesn't seem right for me to impose my morals on then from a state thousa
