  1. Our PLC, way back when, decided to give camporee a miss for three successive years. The reason being that the events became troop-based contests where some troops would "practice" the events for 3-4 months to get good at them. They would then organize their troop based on which guys were the best at each event, then organize them in to "patrols" just for camporee. I kid you not...this went on for YEARS!!! Our guys got their butts kicked so bad that the PLC refused to attend camporee from 2012-2015. We went on a killer canoe trip each year instead. The TC tried to change their mind but, as
  2. How does 47% translate to "in favor"? Conversely, 53% of that same age group are not in favor. One could see that as "bad" given that a person might expect that age group to be more progressive, no?
  3. Great opportunity for the boys to step up. The folks here are right, the BSA Handbook has all you need to know. Next is the Guide to Advancement which has the rest. A cheat sheet, as has been mentioned, would be a great idea. If you council/district has it, a list of MBCs would round out all that information. I cannot think of anything more you might need.
  4. Thanks. Life kicked in and had to fight fires...one of which was saving a unit where nearly all adult leaders and Life Scouts left Scouting after the recent news. Topic for another thread.
  5. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Nope, this argument is the straw man. Boy Scouts is for boys. So a member of an organization for boys -- that has been for boys only for over 100 years -- has a very valid argument asking why girls should be allowed. You say "people asked for change". People also asked for things NOT to change. In fact according to BSA's own surveys more people asked for NO change than asked for change. So, again, the question @@backpack asked is valid. Why change? Using your own argument if it's so self-evident that "why change" is "because people asked for it", then it should be similarly
  6. Where is his buddy? LNT violations (frog, caterpillar, gecko tail, vegitation) Clearly this Scout was also caught in a time vortex. He went to the 2012 PWD but is only a Wolf. He should have crossed over by now. Missing his ten essentials. Did Akela know where he was?
  7. That's up to the mods. Just don't dissent their point of view.
  8. Page 5: "ADULT LEADERSHIP ON TREKS All crews going on the trail must have adult leaders; one must be 21 years of age or older, the other 18 years of age or older. Coed Crews must have coed leadership." The guide does not say that only if you go out on the trail in terms of a trek that adults need to be along. It is pretty clear. "All crews going on the trail must have adult leaders...," and in this context the "crew" was out on the trail. Period. That's pretty clear. You are the only one making a distinction between trek and base camp. The Leader Guide does not.
  9. Again.... The fact is that Cub Scouts is NOT for girls and running a parallel program for girls is against what BSA intends. That's a fact. You can delete this post too if you like, but it doesn't make your "opinion" fact or correct. Fact is Cub Scouts is for boys. Period. Anything to the contrary is wrong.
  10. I've run a pack. It was focused on boys per BSA in a family environment. We didn't take applications for girls because it is a silly, meaningless thing to do. Could girls participate? If it didn't take away from the program, sure. But make no mistake it was. boy-focused program. Running a "parallel" program is not Cub Scouts. Running a Cub Scout program they way BSA intends, where family is involved is Cub Scouts. Anything else isn't. Successful or not, it's not Cub Scouts. I could run a Cub program where everything on the age matrix is in scope for Cubs, doesn't make it right..or Cu
  11. No. That's what people say when their argument is weak and cannot be supported by facts. FACT: Cub Scouts is for boys only. Not girls. Refute that fact and then you have a basis for argument, otherwise you are just wrong.
  12. Then they shouldn't put this in their Leader Guide: "Adult Leadership on Treks - all crews going on the trail must have adult leaders..." They were "out on the trail" so they should have had two adults per their own guide.
  13. No. We don't. Cub Scouts does not allow girls. So unless you can show where BSA condones accepting apps for girls and applying the Cub program to them, your running something that's NOT Cub Scouts. It would be like me letting my Scouts shoot pistols. BSA says no but I thumb my nose and say "Sure, why not." Or maybe I let my Cubs ride ATVs. Why not? They're just rules, right?
  14. Seriously? I wanted to draw to his attention that, if he truly wants to chastise people from going "off script" with regard to the BAA program, there are more viable candidates out there (the other thread). Nothing about that response raises THIS TOPIC to I&P level...unless you personally want it to. It was a REFERENCE to another thread; NOT making THIS thread political. Big difference.
  15. That wasn't a phone booth. That was a red TARDIS.
  16. @@Snow Owl, Cub Scouts is for boys. Not sure what this program is.
  17. Ok, I need some context here. What's a Monopoly "run". Is that a pub crawl for Scouts?
  18. Meanwhile, @@RichardB chastises a Scouter in another thread for "not running the right program" even though the idea is totally something a good district or council would do. Hey @@RichardB, THIS is the thread you should be throwing your BSA indignation at. They have girls in Cub Scouts. Heck they're even taking applications and they say council knows. How about you rant a bit here, huh?
  19. @@RichardB, really? How about you come down on the people marketing to girls and integrating them in to the program, instead of a pack trying to think outside of the box and offer up something council should be doing in the first place. Geesh!
  20. Sounds like a great activity, but with all the changes you noted your communication and registration model might need some revision. The biggest issues see in our area: - Schools don't put out calendars until very late. - Same with sports leagues. - District is just as bad, not putting out dates until too late. So we've had to market our fall activities VERY early (May-June) directly to people as well as Packs, and push big time through social media. Of course direct marketing only works if you have peoples' emails.
  21. Female leader shortage. I live in the biggest district in my council. Three troops have female leaders of 25 units. Our unit has the most at three. The others have one each. That's five total. If we went coed we would need as many female leaders as we have male ones to cover events. I don't see that happening. There aren't many women who can carry a 50 lbs pack and want to take a 12-day trek. At least not where I live and I'm in a big metro area.
  22. What's this program you're running called? I have never heard of a Cub Scout pack collecting applications on non-members and tracking them in PackMaster...or any other software. Since girls aren't part of the program why does all the back office stuff matter? Do you give them patches and ranks too?
  23. Sorry, but why do you have apps for girls? What's the point? They're not covered by insurance. What purpose does having the girl's parents fill out an app serve?
  24. You turn in applications for girls to council and they accept them? And they are processed as part of your roster?
