  1. The whole point of this conversation is that others may do it differently and still be "right" as long as the ceremony is performed in a respectful manner. I do agree with you regarding "Retreat" but that is coming from a veteran - I'm used to military flag ceremonies. The flag code has no mention of it.
  2. We used the command "two" in the Navy. I'm searching for a manual/reference for it now.
  3. I like the flag ceremony listed here. Simple & direct without a lot of extra commands. One thing- we use "Color Guard return to post" instead of "Color Guard retreat". link to ceremony
  4. Here's a link to the United States flag code. I find it an interesting read as I was taught things as a youth that were wrong. The Boy Scout Handbook, 12th edition, pg 74, tells us in the Hoisting the Flag section, "When the flag is flying freely, step back and salute as the other person ties the halyard to the flag pole." There is no specific ceremony or sequence of orders for a flag ceremony. What flag ceremony script does your unit use?
  5. Please provide a reference for this statement.
  6. What distance does your Troop travel for Summer Camp? What's the maximum you've done? The minimum? How much of a role does distance play in the decision making process?
  7. @@Stosh - this reply doesn't seem to fit in this discussion. Maybe in the SPL/PL for Small Troop thread?
  8. My Troop might have a problem handling an unannounced Webelos Den depending upon the size of the Den and the skills instruction planned for that night.
  9. When I say "After a scheduled visit, make sure to visit unannounced. Does the unannounced meeting look/feel like the scheduled visit?", I don't mean as a Den. I meant it as an individual Webelo & parent. A Troop should be able to easily fit an individual Webelo into their meeting. A den is a different story.
  10. Scouts: 1. describe your last camp out 2. describe your last Troop meeting Adults 1. describe your last camp out 2. describe your last Troop meeting 3. how are communications handled? 4. what is your yearly fundraising plan? After a scheduled visit, make sure to visit unannounced. Does the unannounced meeting look/feel like the scheduled visit?
  11. What fundraisers does your unit do? How many in a year? Do you have a yearly Troop equipment fee?
  12. Has anyone tried a Join Scouting Night presentation in a Middle School? What kind of turn out did you have? Was it successful? What worked? What didn't work?
  13. It's finally here. Not just a press release. link
  14. Reading another topic got me thinking. At the end of your Unit's Scout year, how much money is left? Please let us know the size of your Pack/Troop/Crew/Team.
  15. Now the statement from the General Secretary of the UMM is gone. I find this out right after my IH (Methodist) asks for it.
  16. You realize it's Thursday, right?
  17. Up to this point, I've been splitting the SPL duties between myself and the Merlin PL. I'm just trying to take the next step back.
  18. Never mind. It worked that time.
  19. I'm the SM for a small Troop. 10 Scouts (a new one just joined on Monday). 2 Patrols: The Merlins - 4 Scouts, 16, 16, 15, 15 yrs old; & the Ghosty Goats - 6 Scouts, 12, 12, 12, 11, 11, 11 yrs old. 3 out of the 4 Merlins are active, we see the 4th ~once a month - he just finished his Eagle project & then he's done; 6/6 of the Ghosty Goats are active. We split into two Patrols in April. Right now, we don't have an SPL. Just 2 PLs. They'll soon be electing their new PLs. I'm struggling with the SPL position. If they elect an SPL, he would most likely come from the
  20. I've tried starting a new topic in the Patrol Method sub-forum with no success. Are the new topics getting moderator approved before posting happens? Or do I just need to be patient? What am I doing wrong?
  21. Yep. It goes in the temporary patch position. The Scout that earned it decided to sew it on. The patch itself is smaller than I expected. There is a medal that one can earn - the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement. link
  22. Has your Troop planned out next year yet? What's on the list for the upcoming year? How many months are "pre-planned" due to tradition?
  23. I let my COR and IH know about the change. Currently have a meeting scheduled with them to answer their questions. The CO is local Methodist church. I was told the church will be addressing their own membership policy in 2016.
