  1. Narragansett Council has partnered with Eleanor Slater Hospital to provide mental health services for Camp Yawgoog campers and young adult staff members this summer. "Six clinical psychologists from Slater have agreed to be available to offer support for any time of the day for one week each while the overnight camp is in session, which runs from late June to late August. 👍 The National Camp Accreditation Program introduced new standards in 2023 that included a recommendation for all Boy Scouts of America organizations to provide mental, emotional and social health support. 2. I guess it all depends on when and where you grow up. When I was a kid, we still had nude swimming at the YMCA. Didn't seem strange to me at the time, since it had always been done that way.
  3. Most of the BSA summer camps that I'm aware of seem to have taken girl troops in stride. No big deal. A girl troop can go to camp like any other troop, they just register and do whatever the boys do (but with female leadership requirements). A few camps seem to stress over it. I've heard of one large council-run scout reservation of several camp areas that isolates the girls in their own area. I've heard that the Heart of America council has a "Girls only week" at Bartle Scout Reservation. I wonder how that works .... are girl troops required to go during that one (and only tha
  4. Hello, This summer I will be working as Paid Camp Staff for the first time (Camp Kern, CA). I was asking to see if the forum had advice for me and all new Camp Staff (what to bring, what not to bring, compensation, etc.). Additionally, I thought it would be kinda cool to hear everyone’s stories from there time on staff Thanks
  5. "Effective June 1, 2018, adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as a leader, including completion of a criminal background check and Youth Protection Training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive." https://scoutingwire.org/updated-youth-protection-training-now-available/?utm_source=scoutingwire&utm_campaign=SWVolunteer3142018&utm_medium=email&utm_content=A
  6. Do you give guidelines for any letters coming from home to Summer Campers? Have you had any negative effects from letters?
  7. I got back from a week at camp with our troop last week and it was, in a word, transformative. So, grab a cup of coffee or a glass of your favorite beverage and settle in for a long read. TROOP PROLOGUE Before my son and I joined, the Troop talked the talk on boy-led but it wasn’t very much boy-led in the outdoors. The outdoor program consisted of one nearby campout, two backpacking trips and one cabin camping trip. The adults designed and implemented the program with the boys leading by performing the tasks that they were assigned. I came in at the same time as the new scoutmast
  8. What would it include with regards to program??? Looking to advise council on how to put together a successful week long program at summer camp exclusive to Venturing. Two one week sessions. Location is scout camp with the following available facilities: Mountain settings in Pines Large lake within 5 minute drive Tent platform camping Rifle ranges, shotgun range, archery range Climbing wall Horses Pool Thinking outside the box. What would the Worlds Best Venturing Summer camp have for the daily Programs?
  9. My cousin's troop is looking in to Seven Ranges for a future summer camp. I'd not heard of this camp before. Anyone have any experience with this camp? How's the MB program? More importantly, how's the staff (revolving or pretty steady)? How are the facilities?
  10. What distance does your Troop travel for Summer Camp? What's the maximum you've done? The minimum? How much of a role does distance play in the decision making process?
  11. Had an interesting topic come up. Have a parent taking their sons to a camp "back home" this summer. They are registering as lone scouts plus the parent. the parent has YPT but is not fully trained. The camp is asking for a tour permit. Since the parent is not fully trained they are not technically valid to be the lead on the tour permit. Any one ever encounter something like this? I was surprised the camp wants a tour permit for essentially "lone scouts". Any suggestions on how to handle?
  12. Just returned from week 6 of Camp Rockefeller summer camp. Quapaw Council, Damascus, Arkansas. This place rocks! Great staff, excellent facilities, older Scout activities; it had it all. The "ROCKS" (trail to first class) program included swimming & first aid merit badge. The material was presented well & the Scouts were active during the class - doing not just sitting & listening. Meals were good. Trading post shutdown the soda machine during heat advisory days (2). I had 1 16 yr old Life Scout go just to participate in the Buffalo National River canoe trip.
  13. I've heard of a few Troops that put on their own week long Summer Camp. Does your Troop? Care to share your thoughts on this?
