  1. DC this is not about my personal comfort. Or a fear that scouts within my troop will be at a disadvantage. We are a nondenominational mostly agnostic troop. with some multi faith in there, mostly Christian, islamc and Buddist.

My fear is that some will use this new requirement as an evangelical green light for conversion. and that this will be abused to ostracize scouts that are in a minority faith than the rest of their troop.

I am not complacent enough to just STFU and just follow along with this without thought or comment.

  2. I cant say if they handled it correctly or not. maybe the best they could do with a bad situation.

I would say something about how you perceive the election:

My son has been in scouting since tigers AOL. Made first class after 14 calender months in the troop. First year at camp he earned 3 eagle required and wilderness survival. Second year (July 2014) he took wilderness survival because he thought it was a blast and didnt care he was only going to earn 3 merit badges out of a possible 6. So here we are a small 12 yo with some maturity issues. also a geek dungeons and dragons player. But he works hard at scouts always takes care of other scouts. will lend a cliff bar to a fellow scout if he has one and the other scout is hungry. I was like you OA will never happen or him at least not now. too immature too small too geeky not with the IN crowd.

I was taking BSA guard at the time so during the elections I was in the water. I have no idea whats going on at camp.

I get back to camp and the other adults are smiling at me like we got a secret but due to BSA guard all i can really do is eat and goto bed.

Turns out he was elected i was shocked and surprised and a very proud dad. He did his ordeal in August.

Funny thing is whenever i project my limitations onto him, to protect him and make sure he isnt setup for failure he tends to smash right through them without even trying.

Dont underestimate the boys they'll surprise you

  3. Neither point supports your initial point that I'm disputing "Da Vinci had to hide his works from the Church" he was charged with sodomy but the Wikipedia article makes no reference to who brought the charges. Deists.com claims Da Vinci was not a Catholic' date=' while the Wikipedia article claims he was given the Catholic sacraments of confession and Last Rites before he died. I'm not looking to start any arguments over the subject, I'd never heard that Da Vinci hid things from the church outside of a Dan Brown novel.[/quote']

So what is your point? that my facts about Da Vinci may be inaccurate. if so i can retract. but other than that galieoo was a heretic according to the church as was Capernicus.

maybe we should stop paying attention to churches and those that follow them.

  4. This is an interesting discussion' date=' but I would suggest there are a few folks who need to do some soul searching regarding their abject terror about religion.[/quote']

Wow. so basically if those that don't with you are not in touch with their souls and have doubts in their own faiths. And we should be quiet and ensure that we don't make to many waves that might disrupt the majority.

  5.

Their work is valuable, their contributions as people were rather questionable during the time they could make a positive contribution to society.

We expect to value Eagle scouts only AFTER they have died?

I'm going out on a limb here, but I do believe the art world and even the world in general don't care one iota about the artists themselves, only their work. Whereas Sr. Theresa left behind a legacy of character and no tangible evidence of her ever living in this world. Do we remember her because of her work or because of the value of she who she was. If we are going to be producing young men of character, it really doesn't matter what work they do in life. I'm working on the value of their character when I work with this young boys. What they do for a living is of not concern of mine.

    Stosh

Stosh, your alliteration to the artist that does not show his work failed. then you shifted to character. DeVinci had to hide his work for being against the Church, as did Galileo both labeled as hereticsI assume that since where heretics they had faulty character.

Can we for certain ensure that NO scout will be denied rank due to this question and that scouts differences of faith with the SM and or troop in general?

Another question how does this make the program better?

  6. My unit has encountered this. The older scout patrol stopped for pizza and donuts enroute and brought it to camp. They thought themselves rather clever. By Sat lunch, their mooching off the younger prepared scouts was !

So here's what we do now at departure gathering.

SPL: Are all patrols ready for campout?

NSP PL: Flaming Arrow patrol is ready to light the way.

Leper Colony PL: ...Well, er you see our grubmaster kind of forgot...

SP: Is Leper Colony Patrol ready or not?

Leper Colony PL: No, we forgot food.

    SM: SPL is troop ready?

SPL: Troop is NOT ready, one patrol, Leper Colony, is not ready.

SM: SPL do you intend to proceed without that patrol, delay departure, or cancel campout?

SPL: (now a decison has to be made and more questions are asked)

So far no SPL has canceled a campout and no patrol has attended a campout without proper gear and food.

    My $0.01 for tough love,

    Love this :)

  7. You do seem pretty paranoid about it. The paranoia could be justified if you had seen other examples where BSA acted in this manner' date=' but it appears it's a bad personal experience with a religious group that's driving it instead. You seem very fixated on your "non-Christian" status and a little uncomfortable with it as well. These days, one seems more likely to be persecuted if they are Christian than non-Christian.[/quote'] Yes because I am questioning wisdom of this proposal that means that I am uncomfortable with my faith and there not doing my duty to my faith. Ergo How could I show good scout sprit if I am uncomfortable. Therefore if I was a scout going for rank you would potentially deny based on You thinking that someone that is not your faith must not have a real understanding of their own. This just went from theorictally this could happen to just did happen.
  8. I just do not see it happening anymore than it may already. And as always' date=' individuals may find a unit with which they are more comfortable if they choose to. But again, maybe the new guidelines will actually be written to try and mitigate these very issues. Until we see them, it is simply a non issue. There are over the top people in every group environment, and you can learn to cope or find a more welcoming group; or you can work within the group to fix the problem. [/quote']

And what problem does introducing this language fix?
