  1. As stated in another thread I am pretty aquatic and I used to hate all these silly rules about water safety. Then I became a bsa guard I know fully understand why these rules are in place and why they are needed. If you want a sample have one of your older scouts act as a victim and try to swim them in. It is fracking hard and in a situation you may not have personnel available for a rescue swim. Btw I used to be station in Pearl Harbor the tides aren't bad. As compared to here in New England but rip current can appear anytime in the waters you describe particularly after a rain with low tides. I would use a guideline rope to use during the crossing with adults downstream.

  2. We do need a uniform.. I am in favor of a more military uniform and more stringent standards I think of the class a as a dress uniform even though I have only had mine 9 months I don't like cooking ortending a fire in it. So I think a feild uniform is needed bdu in olive drab or dark tan.

  3. my 0.02 cents and background

1 Recently I became a BSA guard / aquatics instructor

    2 Certified SCUBA

3 former competive swimmer in high school

4 currently sprint and olympic length triathlete

The cited bullet is the last paragraph of 4.

Distance and Competitive Swimming in Open Water

The following policies apply when distance swimming is conducted outside the confines of a normal Safe Swim Defense area.

    • The environment for an open-water swim must conform to Safe Swim Defense guidelines regarding hazards such as submerged trees, currents, and boat traffic, as well as water quality, depth, and clarity.
    • Each individual swimmer, or at most a buddy pair, may be accompanied by a rowboat with two people onboardâ€â€one skilled in controlling the boat and the other trained in basic water rescueâ€â€equipped with a reaching device and flotation aid, continuously watching the swimmers.
    • Alternatively, a closed circuit may be established where all swimmers are constantly in reach of safety personnel strategically positioned at fixed points on anchored boats, the shore, or piers. Each participant swims with a buddy, and the number and spacing of the swimmers in the water should not exceed the capacity of the watchers to easily count the swimmers as they move from one zone to another.
    • Some competitive swimming events, such as triathlons, also cover long distances. Long-distance swimming races are not approved for Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts, but Varsity Scouts and Venturers may participate in triathlon training and competitive events. All swimming activities conducted by Varsity Scout teams or Venturing crews must conform to Safe Swim Defense guidelines. Individual Varsity Scouts and Venturers may participate in outside triathlon events sanctioned by USA Triathlon.

Sprint and most Olympic length swim course are 'closed circuit' i.e. the swimmer swim a loop and enter and exit at the same area.

Since Boy scouts can do a MILE swim I am assuming that this means anything over a mile is Long-distance. this would include ITU (international triathlon union) 1/2 iron-man and iron man

    Sprint - ~=.5 miles / 750 yards / 686 M

    Olympic (5150) - .93 miles / 1630 yards / 1500M

    ITU Long 1.86 miles / 3KM

    1/2 Ironman (70.3) - 1.2 miles 1.9KM

    Full Ironman - 2.4 miles 3.8KM

    Sanctioning Bodies

In the USA USA triathlon is the sanction body for Olympic and many sprint lengths.

USAtriathlon will co-sanction many local sprint triathlons such as YMCA tri and the like.

Additionally they will co-sanction ITU events held within the USA.

Ironman is a corporation that sanctions IronMan Ironkid and Irongirl

If you are going to be in a troop / pack triathlon these must be sanctioned by USAtriathlon. this ensures that the event has proper safety for the event. Lifeguards, Ambulances, traffic controls.

i.e. the local church has decided to do a tri in the local swimmin hole and backroads to raise funds witout going through USAtri. thats a no.

varsity and ventures want to do a 70.3 or full ironmand go ahead. thats outside of USA tri and Ironman or ITU.

Cub and boy scout under 14 will most likely not be in open water during the tri and these rules do not apply

  4. I don't think it's a stretch to say that homosexuality is not acceptable in at least three of the main religions of the world' date=' Muslim, Judaism, and Christianity, and yet it is through non-religious measures allowed. I think Christianity sums it up pretty well, "Render unto Caesar that which belongs to Caesar...." This is the standard civil marriage that's always been there, now open to homosexuals. However, now the government (Caesar) wants to impose religious rights to their decision. That is so totally anti Freedom of Religion it's hard to believe that the general population doesn't see it. It's always surprising how humankind can always find a way to self-justify itself on just about any topic. And it's unfortunate that much of the freedom this country once had is now gone. It was a fragile balance to keep it, but now the effort to preserve it has waned. Stosh[/quote'] No the state did not say chruch X must perform the ceremony. Churches and the clergy should and can determine if they will perform the marriage. All the state is saying that if a GLBT couple can find such a person or a justice of the peace or a judge. That that is a valid and league marrage. I don't see how allowing Bob and rob to marry infringes on your right or mine. Can someone explain that to me?
  5. Federal Courts are now deciding that homosexuals get special rights to marriage that very few other social relationships enjoy. So homosexuality rules these days.

Can you site a "special right" that a homosexual has over anyone else?

Despite that, of course, liberals don't want BSA to be a source of DIVERSITY by excluding homosexuals.

How is excluding those that you disagree with diversity?

Generally speaking, I find that liberals are opposed to diversity if it differs in some way from their own bright ideas and social theories.

You have seem to have a very broad brush as to what a liberal is. from what i read from you it is anyone who disagrees with your point of view.

The Boy scouts is not a place for you to indoctrinate political views on our boys. Our job as scouters is to give them the knowledge to make educated decisions on their chosen political stance. and the courage to stand on those choices.

I fail to see how being for LBGT couples marrying is a liberal stance. In my point of a view a person that wants the government so powerful that it can see into the intimate lives of adults in the bedroom is a far reach of governmental power. Iran and russia come to mind when i think of anti-gay police forces. Perhaps you think we should have a more theologic poltical system where the beleifs of one faith rule the government. that is called Iran.

I find you are quite liberal in the use of govt to oversee and regulate what relationships are and will be permitted. that is the exact oppisite of a conservitve small government.

another question. ted and Paul get married and move next door to you. How does that impact you in the slightest?

  6. Keep in mind that today's liberals really don't care a fig about "diversity" either. They want their values rto rule just like the groups they oppose' date=' and are delighted with the opportunity tocoerce others into following their values or read other groups out of polite society when they get the chance to do so. It's the pot calling the kettle black, By and large, people LIKE their differences.[/quote'] So how is supporting the rights of an individual liberal? Or do we only stand for rights for people with the same sexual preference as us?
