  1. I do... National has said no to GL leaders (not going into the current PC alphabet soup) Even though they may be parents of a scout. and have full legal marraige. as of now what do we do with those parents / families. because a family that comes to scouting because their boy wants t. That boy is a highly motivated scout. and we are shutting that family out and losing the resources that they would bring to the table.

  2. And if a new scout shos up at your dn / troop meeting and says here are my 2 dads / moms? Are you really going to turn them away and make them feel uncomfortable. Deny the beenfit of scouting to this non-traditional family? deny the boy the all the oppirtunites that scouting gives?

me personnally i would try to integrate them as much as we can.

  3. Science with a Sparkle for the gals? That's got to be the most sexist thing I've seen in a long time. Chemistry, engineering, robotics for the boys, sparkle for the gals? Somebody would scream to high heaven if it was Chemistry, engineering, robotics for the gals and sparkle for the boys. Doesn't anyone proof read these things anymore?

totally agree but the girl scouts use this a marketing to girls. this age group brownie - junior.

Girl scout Digital Arts / Science and technology badges:

Brownie - Computer expert / Home scientist

Junior - Entertainment Technology / digital photography

Cadette - digital movie maker / science of happiness

Senior - science of style / website designer

science of style is at least real science

  4. Qwasze You make my point. Science in scouting was more directly related to what they would find in the outdoor environment than in a school lab. Now we have merit badges for video games' date=' building robot cars, playing chess, and other such nonsense, a perfect haven for those overweight sedentary boys who are afraid of the outdoors and getting a boo- boo. That is why the numbers will continue to drop in numbers, until National realizes there is a real need to go back to the original basics that made scouting popular with most boys instead of the couch potato's it now is catering to.[/quote']

Science has always been a part of scouting!!

BP how are robots not outdoors?

Chess is a skill that teaches strategy and critical thinking. An SPL can learn a GREAT deal about resource management from a good game of chess.

you say STEM as nonsence and here you are clattering away at a keyboard leveraging the internet to complain. Make sure the boys in your troop have no understanding of how information travels because that is a waste of time.

Ohhh yeah try to get a ROTC scholarship with an Eagle rank and no understanding of STEM. let see how that goes for your troop.

  5. WOW. this is a preattyl cool thing. the Olyimpic team got Ralph Loren and BSA had Oscar de la Renta. well at least we did. Who designs them now? Perhaps the BSA should do a Project Runway episode.

although i am in favor of the green numbers not the red.

  6. OK so for about the nth time of hearing us scouters complain about STEM and how STEM is going to destroy the outdoor traditions of scouting. My position is:

STEM is required for our boys to lead the world in the next 10-20 years.

STEM has always been a part of scouting. e.g. 1911 merit badges, chemistry, scholarship.

STEM does not mean classroom. The fact that some Troops, districts and counsels make it class room is not STEM's fault it's the people running STEM. Give them ideas to teach STEM WHILE outdoors.

See that shooting star? hey how fast was that thing moving? how high up do those things burn up at?

On the mischievious side: OK there is a girl scout camp across the the lake. We are going to build a robot to raise our troop flag in there camp ground.

    How does the GPS work?

Lets stop blaming STEM as a crutch for the couch potato scouts and blame the adult leaders that are offering STEM in a classroom setting.

IMHO If you are not incorporating STEM in some fashion (field or classroom) into your program you are doing a disservice to your boys.

If one is to lead by example' date=' I would prefer the adults not wear the uniform over wearing it incorrectly. Sends the wrong message to the boys. Stosh[/quote'] Totally agree. Either in uniform correctly or out of uniform entirely

The BSA isn't and never was intended to be for all boys. It's an organization that requires a religious adherence as one of its membership requirements. Boys who aren't religious' date=' like girls, can still be good people but aren't eligible for membership. They can be members of other youth groups or start their own, but this is the way the BSA was set up. I wouldn't join an atheist organization and demand they accommodate me by allowing me to start the meeting with a Christian prayer.[/quote'] Can Do a Buddhist meditation at you next meeting then. Or is this only for Christians?
  9. The UK was the first to introduce Scouting to the world. They just might be the first to run it into the ground, too.

    Stosh

:) perhaps you should go to geography cass instead of sunday school :) it New Zealand not the UK.

Besides what else has been the same for 100 years? Baden Powell did ALOT more to scouting than introducing religion into the scouting oath.

He was a man a great man and a flawed man, his word for lack of a better term is not gospel. Lets take the good he did and move forward with that.

TBH i hate the this religion thing is tearing scouters apart. scout should be about what scouting is about, being outdoors, doing good for the community and nation, making boy the men that will lead the future.

  10. One idea for the ashes. If you have a home camp site. i.e. you go to this one 2 or three times a year. take the ashes from the flag burrning ceremony and put them in the fire pits of your campfires as your camp though out the year. it makes a great lights out. and get the boys to reflect about their role in our nation.
