  1. We did not make it but the webelos den ahead of my son's made a catapult out of wood.
  2. I think with wolves we made pinewood derby car display stands. It was 3 pieces of wood. It was similar to this only the top was flat and was sized to fit inbetween the wheels. http://www.pinewoodpro.com/pinewood-derby-car-stand.htm
  3. You don't need to be charging admission to get hit with violating home use provision. I had a friend who worked private eye they were hired by the cable company to look for establishments who were showing pay perview fights but only purchased the home use license (this was in the mid 90's technology may have changed to make this easier to track). He would drive around and walk into bars and see if the fight was on. It didn't matter that they were not advertising or charging admission to watch the fight. I don't remeber what the penalty was, it might of been the cable company slapping them with
  4. It seems like you have 2 potential violations - Showing a copywritten movie to a group without permission. Libraries, schools, churches etc can pay for licenses that cover a lot of film companies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Licensing_Corporation license so the charter organization may have this. There is a decent change that the charter organization is covered. This does require that the movie was legally obtained which leads us to - I don't know of legal means to obtain a major movie while it is still in the theater. I assume there are some. Movies may be sent to critics
  5. It is obviously wrong. Devils advocate here... what if they were handing out copies from a book that showed the scouts how to tie knots? More than likely that would violate a copyright. It is amazing how much people no longer value intellectual property. It is pretty common to do a search on some subject and you find different websites that have the same text, one of the sites copied w/o referencing the original text.
  6. Cubs and canoeing its flat water and council or district property. Seems overly restrictive.
  7. You take a cub scout pack on a week long BWCA trip? I could see some Webelos being able to handle it but the younger scouts I assume they struggle.
  8. I think that the sign up process can work for individual volunteer opportunities. Pick up the cake and supplies for blue and gold, provide transportation to a camp out etc. But this thread is about replacing den leaders and leadership in general. I think that it is better to have some vetting and asking people who you think would be a good fit. It is pretty common to have threads about den leaders that are in over their head or CC who don't let the CM do there job or CM who don't do their job. Every person does not have leadership skills but they could still have volunteer skills. I would rath
  9. Family camping is odd. What rules should be followed and what rules are not. I have seen family "camping" at scout camps where a unit can rent a cabin with one big room with bunk beds. So you end up with multiple families (and genders) in the same room. I question that the building was built this was in the first place. Most of the camp sites that I have been to now have individual doors for the showers so each becomes a private room. Pool houses seem to have 4 separate bathrooms and showers separated by age and gender. I have heard some scouts discussing that they were going to show
  10. Give yourself lead time. Our school allows flyers to be sent home with the kids but the flyer needs to be approved by multiple people which adds time.
  11. For my son's rec swim team each family is required to volunteer at a minimum of 2 meets for each swimmer (so if you have 2 swimmers you need to volunteer 4x). There is a sign-up and they track it. If you don't volunteer the kid cannot swim at the championship meet. Since they created to policy no one has failed to volunteer. We also don't have the panic if looking for timers right beore the meet starts. The carrot could be they will not get rank advancement. I know some will say you can't add requirements for rank advancement.
  12. In my observations groups always get by with the minumum amount of volunteers this isn't unique to scouting. I have been in packs of 50 and 150 and dens with 4 - 10. The 150 scout unit did not have a exceess of parents waiting to be tasked with something. How big are the dens? You said that it is a thriving pack. My guess is that the each den is 6-10 scouts? My guess is if you say without a den leader the scouts cannot continue one of those parents will step up. If the den is on 3 or 4 it may be harder in my observation a 3 or 4 scout den is not as much fun for the boys and they and their
  13. I think that there are functioning alcoholics that drink everyday. They might not get stumbling drunk. But 2 or 3 drinks everyday. They would be both physically and mentally adicted. So I could see them having issues camping.
  14. I have not experience too much of the parents taking over and overly focused on winning. But I think the Pinewood derby is over emphasised. The tracks are expensive for only being used 1 or 2x per year. I actually think it is pretty hard for most Tigers, Wolves and some bears to cut the wood. Getting the wheels somewhat alligned is not the easiest of tasks. These scouts are pretty much left to painting it.When you get into deburing axels and polishing them I think that just about everyone uses a power drill. Which excluded the scouts. Webelos and some bears do have the stregth to use a ha
  15. We use to have den meetings on Saturday afternoons. We only had 2 den meetings per week but we would schedule them for 2 hours at a time. The afternoon allowed us to plan outside activities in the winter w/o worrying about it being too dark. At the time we made a big effort to not turn it into school we found being outside helped with this. The majority of our meetings were outside. The longer 2 hour meeting also allowed us to plan multiple activites during the meeting. The afternoon worked because the ones that were in sports would have practice during the week and games were in the morning o
  16. So when they said the Cubmaster should pay did they really mean troop funds? I am not saying that the troop should pay for it but I would be less annoyed with the parent if they really meant the troop. Which leads me to you called this the "old" Christmas party which I took to mean it is an annual event. If that is the case who has paid in the past? Is the one that was planned this year more expensive than the ones in the past?
  17. What is your current Web 1's planning on doing next year? If they are finishing under the old program I would hold out the ones they can earn. They may be hard to purchase next year. For the others I wwould have a beltloop camping trip. Where you work on belt loops to use up your inventory. Assume you have 4 of one and 5 of another etc. Break the participants up so that you will not need to buy more. I would also tell the den leaders what you have so that they can plan their meetings to use them up. The key is using them up w/o needing to buy any.
  18. In the first post you mentioned that he will act like he doesn't have vision issues and you gave an example that he will avoid coloring. In another post you mentioned that you would finish the coloring so it looked like he did it. But then you complain in the same post that people don't believe he has a vision problem. They might be reacting to what they think you and your son want... to ignore the vision problem and act like it doesn't exist. It seems you and your son might be sending mixed messages. They might believe he has a vision problem but they think you and your son wants it to be ign
  19. Maybe it is just me but I would rather dig a cathole than use a latrine or porta-john that has been used by a bunch of scouts that have questionable aim.
  20. I have always sort of interpreted the the age requirements to be specific to LDS and the grade requirements for non LDS. I think I had someone explain it to me this way but I don't think I have seen anything official. Either way this pack is doing it wrong.
  21. since you asdked about council properties here is a decent starting point http://www.skcscouts.org/facility-rental/
  22. I am in Westerville, which is a northeast subburb. I have been here 2.5 years. My experience would be at the cub level and I am somewhat knowledgable of the Westerville troops.
  23. FWIW the age appropriate guidelines does not allow overnight backpacking for cubs (including Weblos).
