  1. OGE, They think that Obama will sign some UN Small Arms treaty that will circumvent the 2nd Amendment, by limiting ammo and/or components. Obama has stated he is in favor of bringing back the Assault Weapons Ban. They fear liberals will put limits on the amount of ammo and/or components a person can own. I am an NRA Life Member, NRA Rifle Instructor, Classified High Power Competitor, Classified Long Range Competitor. The High Power crowd is one of the most conservative groups of gun owners (just shy of Class 3 owners). At High Power matches, the conversation will come up occassionaly about what we each would do if the US Government decided to confiscate all firearms. Would you turn them over? Would you hide them? Would you resist? For you, is that your final answer?
  2. evry, I don't hear those comments from our Scouts, nor my son. They don't wear them to school, but they do in the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade (one of the biggest in Georgia). They wear them when selling popcorn, in front of the bank or grocery store. They don't hide the fact that they are in Scouts. On the contrary, I hear them bragging to their friends about some of the things we do in the Troop. They post pictures on their Facebook pages of them in uniform, and from on our camping trips. Several of them were posting last night about our caving trip this weekend. Ed, the comment I posted about church was in reference to Beavah's comment - "Same with whether it is "visible as a force of good in the community". I guess I used a little html that made Beavah's comments invisible.
  3. OGE, You didn't get the memo? It was all those imaginary tea party voters who put Scott Brown in office. I still haven't figured out how they did it (get imaginary people to vote, that is.) On a side note, the crowds here in Georgia at gun shows are larger than they have ever been, even during the time of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. Lines 300 yards long to get in, AR-15 type rifles selling like hot cakes, ammunition selling out during the first few hours of the shows. Primers, powder and bullets are hard to find. The economy may be in the tank, but Obama has done a great job keeping the gun and ammunition industries running at 110%.
  4. PCHS is for Petty County High School - you can see it in one of the scenes. The movie looks to be very anti-Obama. The altered pledge, the "never let a good crisis go to waste", the congressman shutting down the Boy Scouts. A very David-and-Goliath story in the end, so it appears. Hard to tell how it portrays the BSA, in the end. A silly, clumsy group, or final defenders of the Constitution? I agree it looks low budget. Coming to theaters September, 2010. Leaving theaters October, 2010 (if it makes it that long) Coming to DVD November, 2010.
  5. Haven't been around Cubs lately, eh, Beavah? The new Tigers can't wait to get their new uniform, same with many of the new Wolfs and Bears. Webelos can't wait to get that new green & tan uniform, either. And since Boy Scouts get most of their members from Cub Scouts, I think it is safe to say the uniform does attract new members. Every time we show up at the church in uniform, we hear lots of comments about how glad they are to see Boy Scout uniforms in the church again. They certainly see us as a "visible as a force of good in the community". When we march in the 4th of July parade, we get lots of positive comments.
  6. More faulty "science" in UN IPCC Report (and to think this group won a Nobel Prize...) A United Nations report on climate change that has been lambasted for its faulty research is under new attack for yet another instance of what its critics say is sloppy science -- adding to a growing scandal that has undermined the credibility of scientists and policymakers who back the U.N.'s findings about global warming. In the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), issued in 2007 by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), scientists wrote that 40 percent of the Amazon rainforest in South America was endangered by global warming. But that assertion was discredited this week when it emerged that the findings were based on numbers from a study by the World Wildlife Federation that had nothing to do with the issue of global warming -- and that was written by a freelance journalist and green activist. EUReferendum, a blog skeptical of global warming, uncovered the WWF association. It noted that the original "40 percent" figure came from a letter published in the journal Nature that discussed harmful logging activities -- and again had nothing to do with global warming. "For years, we have been told that the IPCC peer review process is the gold standard in scientific review. It now appears it is more of a fool's gold process."
  7. I am getting emails from individuals trying to register on this site, but not able to do so. I posted the information from one individual in the New To The Forum section, but never saw a reply. I've received emails from two more individuals with the same problem. email: I'm having the same problem that you posted in that thread on behalf of Jay Newell. I am unable to join scouter.com because the site is not emailing a registration id. I've also tried the "Contact Us" form at scouter.com but I have not received a reply. I know you are not responsible for scouter.com but perhaps you could add this email text to that thread. Thanks for your time, Bob Hanson Is anybody driving this train? If so, please reply or give a working email address so these people can reach you.
  8. Gern, My political agenda is freedom. I don't care to give it up to a bunch of control-freak progressives. The earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years. There is no proof that what we are seeing is anything other than natural cycles. When "scientists" have to exaggerate to scare us into to action, my BS detector starts pinging. When the vocal leader of the AGW movement (Al Gore) lives a lifestyle that produces 10 - 15 times the amount of carbon of the average citizen, my BS detector gets even louder. Actions speak much louder than words. When the scientists at the CRU are deleting emails and hiding data that have been requested in an FOI act, my BS detector is ringing like an alarm clock. Funny how I have an agenda, but the scientists relying on grants to study supposed global warming don't.
  9. evry, You don't need any bylaws to see the definition of the official BSA uniform - it's in your son's Boy Scout Handbook. It doesn't include blue jeans. This is another example proving Baden-Powell's statement, "Show me a poorly uniformed Troop, and I'll show you a poorly uniformed Scoutmaster." evry, what is the downside of requiring the Scouts to wear the complete, correct uniform? What harm will this cause the Scout? What is the upside? The Scout learns to follow instructions, to be prepared, to have his gear in order, to take pride in the way he looks, to learn to lead by example, to hold yourself to a higher standard. Sounds like your SPL isn't getting much of this at home. I would suggest to you that carrying around the "requiring a uniform is adding to the requirements" idea will not be conducive to making the Troop better, as you state. Unless you think a poorly uniformed Troop is a good thing. Our SPL was ready for his SM conference and BOR last week. He was wearing his uniform, but didn't have his book. In our Troop, you have to have your Handbook to be in uniform. No book, no BOR. He agreed he was setting a bad example for the rest of the Troop. He had his book this week, and passed his BOR.
  10. So.... I'm assuming that skepticism would extend to ALL those Democrats who publicly stated Saddam had the weapons, and also voted to go to war? Carrying your comparison out a little further, Saddam did everything he could to convince us he was hiding weapons (all in an effort to convince Iraq he had them). The "consensus" among our elected officials and intelligence agencies (as well as international intelligence agencies and the UN) was that he had them. It all turned out to be fake, they didn't exist. Wow, this is starting to sound just like global warming!
  11. Is the "fringe" side growing? Dealing with global warming ranks at the bottom of the publics list of priorities; just 28% consider this a top priority, the lowest measure for any issue tested in the survey. http://people-press.org/report/584/policy-priorities-2010.
  12. More troubling news... Scientists using selective temperature data, skeptics say http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/Scientists+using+selective+temperature+data+skeptics/2468634/story.html Two American researchers allege that U.S. government scientists have skewed global temperature trends by ignoring readings from thousands of local weather stations around the world, particularly those in colder altitudes and more northerly latitudes, such as Canada. In the 1970s, nearly 600 Canadian weather stations fed surface temperature readings into a global database assembled by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Today, NOAA only collects data from 35 stations across Canada. Worse, only one station -- at Eureka on Ellesmere Island -- is now used by NOAA as a temperature gauge for all Canadian territory above the Arctic Circle. Over the past two decades, they say, the percentage of [Canadian] stations in the lower elevations tripled and those at higher elevations, above 300 feet, were reduced in half. Using the agencys own figures, Smith shows that in 1991, almost a quarter of NOAAs Canadian temperature data came from stations in the high Arctic. The same region contributes only 3% of the Canadian data today. Not good...
  13. Glacier scientist: I knew data hadn't been verified Not only that, the erroneous material was included for POLITICAL reasons. The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders. In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the reports chapter on Asia, said: It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action. One of the problems bedevilling Himalayan glacier research is a lack of reliable data. But an authoritative report published last November by the Indian government said: Himalayan glaciers have not in any way exhibited, especially in recent years, an abnormal annual retreat. When this report was issued, Raj Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, denounced it as voodoo science. Hayley Fowler of Newcastle University, suggested that their draft did not mention that Himalayan glaciers in the Karakoram range are growing rapidly, citing a paper published in the influential journal Nature. In their response, the IPCC authors said, bizarrely, that they were unable to get hold of the suggested references, but would consider this in their final version. They failed to do so. Well, Pachauri should know voodoo science when he sees it - there is a boat load of it in the IPCC report. This isn't science, this is political propaganda.
  14. The SPL Handbook covers the Methods, so the SPL is exposed to them. Some of the explanations incorporate the SPL position.
  15. Barry, Sorry you didn't my quick and dirty explanation of the methods. If you notice the time of the post, I wrote it up just before heading out the door to work. For the record, I have never conducted a uniform inspection of our Troop. The SPL and PLs conduct a quick one at every meeting. The Scribe records attendance and uniforming for quarterly Honor Patrol competition. This works for us, as our boys are 99% in uniform.
  16. The Methods are different between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Boy Scout Methods (8) : Ideals - Scout Oath and Law (repeat at meetings, use to correct inapporiate behavior) Patrol Method (how the Scouts are organized, how they work together) Outdoors (monthly camping trips, summer camp, HA) Advancement (rank, MBs) Adult Association (SM conferences, BORs, MB counselors) Personal Growth (challenging activities, earning MBs) Leadership Development (holding leadership positions, TLT, NYLT) Uniform (inspections, badges)
  17. lol - Now, that is really funny, BadenP. I'm the unkind one, but look at who is doing all the nasty name-calling. That is just too rich! Thanks for letting everyone see who you really are. Have a nice day! :-)
  18. vol, I'm not sure who has the worse tin ear - Obama or Beavah.(This message has been edited by BrentAllen)
  19. Yesssssssss!! Next on the list, Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer. Ben Nelson is probably gone, as well. Kahuna, We (conservatives) could only be so lucky! They think that is the only way to stay in power (pass the bill), when the reality is that will guarantee their defeat. And even if they go thru reconciliation, the special deal the unions worked out to avoid the Cadillac tax on their health plans is gone. Obama is a lame duck just one year into his presidency.
  20. BadenP, How hard can this be to understand? The information I am reading IS the science! The IPCC report isn't some media-created document (wait - after the Himalayan glacier fiasco, it might just be, afterall). For the record, I am a conservationist, as defined by Theodore Roosevelt. I am not an environmentalist, as defined by current liberals. I recycle, teach LNT, love the outdoors, am a member of PETA*. I am not a vegetarian, and do not believe in significantly altering my lifestyle to reduce my cabon footprint because of wild speculations based on "consensus science." BadenP, better turn off your computer and your lights and go live in a cave. All that electricity you are using is causing lots of global warming! Stop breathing, you are poluting the air with carbon dioxide! You are killing the planet! Shame on you!!!! * People Eating Tasty Animals
  21. Hard to believe a Republican could have a chance at a Senate seat in Massachusetts, but it looks like he might pull it off! This wouldn't be a change in the tide, this would be a tsunami! Poll: Brown makes gains in Mass. Senate Race (CNN) - A new poll released Monday afternoon indicates that Republican Scott Brown has a 7-point edge over Democrat Martha Coakley in Tuesday's special election in Massachusetts for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's seat. The survey indicates 97 percent of likely Republican voters are backing Brown, independent voters supporting him 64 to 32 percent over Coakley, and nearly one out of 4 Democrats also supporting Brown. In other news (why am I not surprised)... MSNBC's Ed Schultz: I'd cheat to keep Brown from winning SCHULTZ (23:02): I tell you what, if I lived in Massachusetts I'd try to vote 10 times. I don't know if they'd let me or not, but I'd try to. Yeah, that's right. I'd cheat to keep these bastards out. I would. 'Cause that's exactly what they are.
  22. Someone who is Mentally Awake would look at the shoddy science behind the glacier report in the IPCC and start asking questions, not just brush it off to a fringe element. Someone who is Mentally Awake would look at how the National Climate Data Center (NCDC) and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) have reduced the number of weather observation stations from 6,000 in the 1970's to 1,000 and wonder how they can do an oranges to oranges comparison on global temperature. That Mentally Awake person would also look at how they are averaging temperatures in a grid several hundred miles in area, and then cherry-picking the stations to support their agenda. A Mentally Awake person would NOT bury their head in the sand, just because they are told the science is settled.
  23. Consensus Science. AKA opinion; strong lack of evidence. "Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science, consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. And furthermore, the consensus of scientists has frequently been wrong. As they were wrong when they believed, earlier in my lifetime, that the continents did not move. So we must remember the immortal words of Mark Twain, who said, "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." Michael Crichton http://www.crichton-official.com/speech-ourenvironmentalfuture.html The linked article also discusses the discrediting of Mann's hockey stick and problems with mysterious changing of temperature data.
  24. BadenP, Uh... I thought the IPCC Reports WERE the most credible pieces of information available. You know, produced and signed by hundreds of the best and brightest climate scientists in the world! The latest is THE REPORT that governments are using to base their cabon reduction plans on. If this isn't credible, then what is?!?!
