Just a thought, what if, and I mean just what if, the women and children at the sermon on the mount and at the miracle of the loaves and fishes were enumerated but during the dark ages and medeval times the person(s) translating the texts decided it wasnt important to know how many women and children were there. Not malaciously, just that the translators were merely writing for their audience, not worrying about a literalist 1000 years later. There are lost books talked about, what if these texts talked about womens rights and acceptance of all people and the reason they were not included is because the translators felt that universal acceptance and womans rights were such a given, it didnt have to be written down. Back when I was in the seminary, we heard about the story of the inquisitive monk. Seems this monk came to the bible translation/copying abbey and the first thing he asks the Abbot is have the original texts ever been checked against the translation versions, and have the copies ever been checked against the original. The Abbot pooh-poohs the monk, telling him this is the most accurate, most advanced biblical translation/copying Abbey in the world. 5 years later, the inquisitve monk sees the Abbot again, and again asks about the accuracy of the texts, again, he is rebuffed. Finally 10 years later, the monk sees the Abbot and again asks his questions, The Abbot, fed up with the inquisitive monk, says OK, I will go downstairs where we keep the original, and check it against a copy, but after than, no more talking about this topic. Three days later the Abbot comes screaming upstairs, at the top if his lungs he shouts, STOP THE PROCESS, ITS CELEBRATE, NOT CELIBATE!(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

So the youth is 15 now. In a year or two he will be getting his drivers license. It doesnt appear his behavior will change in that time. So, what happens when the intoxicated youth runs over and kills a loved one of yours? Tell the cops the kid has been drinking for years and you just knew this would happen? I see two issues, Scouting Advancement and knowing civil laws are being broken. I may be hung in effigy for suggesting this, but I think the laws being broken need to be addressed long before we worry about scouting advancment -
"Oh if only I had some musical ability and my fingers would move that fast" I should have known, Ronvo is a bagpiper! He was very clever with that foreign comment, but his words betrayed him. Funny thing, I didnt think, when this thread started, that I was a bigoted at all, but here I must confess, I am an antibanjo-ite and suffer from a bagpiperphobia. I guess its only a quesiotn of time before BSA membership is revoked ::choke::

Ronvo, I had no idea you played the banjo

Interesting question, what may be high adventure to one may be a walk in the park for another. What those troops in surburban Atlanta consider High Adventure may not at all thrill a Troop in suburban Anchorage. (I said Anchorage because I dont know how to spell Juneau) To sum up High Adventure I would describe it as Heart Pounding Excitement That Leaves You Wanting More!

Way back in a previous life, when I worked in the hospital, I seem to remember a law that said something like if a hospital worker saw evidence of child abuse, they were to report it to the authorities. Does anyone know if this extends to Scout Masters or other youth organizaiton leaders? -
Are MacLaren Kilts ok ? Not as a part of the Boy Scout uniform Would I prefer to see a Boy Scout Troop all in Maclaren Kilts and the khacki shirt rather than a troop with multi color/lenght/style pants and the khacki shirts? Soitenly! I guess it depends on what the definition of "OK" is

Describe a perfect pitch with an accordion When you toss it in a dumpster and it doesnt hit any of the sides

I think you have an excellent opportunity to teach a life's lesson. I suggest the scoutmaster and committee chair sit down with the scout, with or without parents, your call. Go over the incident and have the scout explain what he did wrong, and what he should have done. Then, have a "contract" drawn up outlining his duties and responsibilites and the penalties for not fulfilling them. Obviously another incident of stealing, cheating, lying, ect would mean expulsion from the Troop. Have him sign it and he keeps a copy and the scoutmaster gets on. Ih he redeems himself, you have a victory,if there is a repeat, then you know you tried to help

Yo, Ronvo, thats a mighty large brush you are using when you say white straight men .... Why not just say the human race sometimes has difficulty dealing with those "different" than themselves.
-
Well, since Homosexuality is a choice, I figure anything people are born with which is different from the "norm" must be a choice.

In 2001 I attended the Jamboree as an ASM of one of our contingent troops. My son was a Patrol Leader of another troop in the Council Contingent. He has a medical condition that requires him to self catheterize himself through a stoma located on his lower abdomen. He sleeps with a urinary drainage bag attached and must flush his bladder with 180 ccs of water every night. When we went to the Jamboree, we had three trunks, one for me, one for him and one for his medical supplies. The medical office at sub camp 3 in 2001 was as accomadating as could be. They gave us a private spot to change catheters and attach the drainage bag, they gave us space to store the supplies so we didnt have to carry it and were all very nice. I cant see having any problems with medical conditions if you let everyone know up front what needs you have.

So Hermaphrodites choose to be born in that condition, interesting concept

Good point Acco. Last saturday I participated in a service project cleaning and landscaping a vacant lot in the downtown area. As it was done on short notice, it was mainly adults, as people walked by the site, I started thinking I wonder if they all think we are DUI's doing our community time. There is the Adopt a Highway program, but if you see a group of kids cleaning up s roadside, Juvy work detail is the first thing I see (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Is The Boy Scouts of America Public or Private?

So Ed, You see no problem with Planned Parenthood taking tax dollars and then advocating abortions? I sure do, -

I do think its disingenous of the BSA to sign a statement of non-discrimination to receive a grant when it knows it can't honor the non-discrimination clause of the grant application. Actually, such non-discrimination clauses are the reason Learning for Life was created as an non-discriminatory part of BSA. In todays charged atmosphere, I think its not very prudent of the BSA to enter into contracts with the plan if its against the rules, we simply say we didnt know. We should know if what we do is legal or not -

If a governmental agency/unit in the area where I live donated money to the BSA, I would be livid. I do not expect my tax money, whether its to the school district or the township to be donanted to the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scout, the Y or any other private organization. I might have a beef with the Girl Scouts accepting lesbian leaders and don't want my money funding such a group. I may not like the way cattle are treated in slaughter houses and would have a real problem with a donation to the local 4-H. Why would any rational person want to have their money "laundered" by a govermental unit on its way to the Campfire girls? If I want them to have my money, I will give it to them so they get all of it Ed, do you know of governmental units that donate money to youth organizations where you live? -
The use of corporal punishment is not permitted in scouting. From the guide to safe scouting, and its in bold print which means its a polic/rule Constructive discipline. Discipline used in Scouting should be constructive and reflect Scouting's values. Corporal punishment is never permitted. End of story, giving out push-ups is wrong, against the rules of scouting and has no place in scouting. If you have a disruptive scout, you remove him from the merit badge class, you may call his parents to take him home, you may not mete out corporal punishment. There are more ways to teach that actions have consequences that making somebody do pushups. Just a questions, when is this Troops next snipe hunt?

How about having the Lodge/Chapter Chief come to a campout or special outdoor meeting? If Mohammed cant come to the mountain, maybe the mountain, well you know.
