Vermont Scouts denied July 4th vendor permit and withdraw

CNN May 15, 2013 I mean I thought I knew what was being said. All this hand-wringing and it turned out it was all a mirage? I really do care about the truth. I have Merit Badge candidates to deal with and an obligation to guide them to accurate facts. Here I am between the Scylla of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN and the Charybdus of Fox and the radio ranters, and you tell me what was said about the IRS scandal is not true ? Where do I go now? -
Sloppy langauge on my part. I was atttempting to distinguish between the paid people and the volunteers. Unless it's changed since I last looked, the CSE is not a voting member of the National Executive Board. But he is the Secretray to the Board, and his office responds to questions from voting Board members, prepares the briefing papers for the Board, and prepares the agendas for Board meetings. So yes, he controls the flow of information to the Board. Can Board members try on their own to gather facts? I guess so. Do they? If so, it would be a surprise. Even President

OT, but I wondered about that myself. So NPR and the IRS agents who testified in 2014 were incorrect. Facts are facts. Lets hear your facts and sources. -
It has often been observed that the actual, working purpose of an organization may be to maintain the officers in office. As with for-profits, non-profits are typically controlled in reality by their officers, who manage information-flow to the board. Boards typically only become active when disaster looms. This activity often follows discussions with personal counsel, who mention fiducuiary duty and potential for personal liability. Speaking only from experience.

Or but them tomorrow. ^___^ A BSA store manager dislikes me intensely. I could express an opinion one way or the other and she would set me straight, citing chapter and verse. -
I do not think he is trying to convince you of anything. One contends for those not committed to the other side. KDD, your question assumes that correct behavior is a matter of contemporary consensus - at least in some relevant group. History is full of behavior that a majority supported, that we now find appalling, and that we assert was wrong when it took place. I need not give examples; they will occur to the reader.

False dichotomy. Assume what you will. There are other possibilities.

At least as late as 1981, BSA strongly discouraged use of chemical stoves.

Right you are. It was Philadelphia. Hyperbole can be entertaining or amusing. It rarely convinces the unconvinced. In my youth, at least, it was the right-wing way to attempt to stifle opinion not favored by them: "No freedom of speech for Communists." -
A troop may design its own neckerchief and, with Council approval, even wear it as part of the Uniform A troop does not need Council approval to select an official neckerchief and wear it. Rules and Regulations of the Boy Scout of America, Special Regulations, The Necherchief (B.S.A. 2014)

It is not always clear in the U.S.A. that government cannot impose the beliefs of a minority, or temporary majority, on persons who hold other beliefs. Our record is mixed. But at least we have a consitutition and, so, a hope that government will not be the only arbiter of acceptable belief. This has, over the years, produced examples where government has been forced to stand down the thought police.

Totally separate from the issue of the wisdom or justice of B.S.A.'s policy, I wonder about the legality of government discriminating against an organization solely on the basis of the group's adoption of a Constitutionally-protected policy of which that the government does not approve. Didn't the City of SanDiego already lose that case? -

Speaking of rules, there are two others that seem to apply: The Rule of Holes. The Rule of Bridges. -

In my limited experience, a rational discussion with people concerned with "a matter of principle" are difficult. They want a trial and victory, not settlement - except one where thet get all they want and you get zilch. -

Boy Scout dies of self-inflicted gunshot at San Diego scout camp

Not 11. 12-year-old child Not shot in the head. Latest police report is that fatal shot was to torso. Not a Boy Scout camp but Boy Scouts camping at a city park.. Not officially ruled a suicide at this point. -
Training is basic, advanced, and "other." U of Scouting, Powderhorn, and Baden Powell Institute are examples of "other." Wood Badge is "advanced." If it were up to me, Wood Badge would more than suffice.

This came up here years ago. Charter and Bylaws and Ruiles and Regulations of the Boy Scouts of America, Article x, Section 4, Clause 9: Mike Walton, whom a number of you know, related witnessing the recall of B.S.A. badges and insignia from a pedophile: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474977728933 He also reports:

Again, a reqiurement is that he live according to the Scout Oath and Law. He swears to do his best to do so as a Scout, regardless of advancement considerations. He clearly fails that requirement. I sit on a Council Appeal Board. He can appeal. The overwhelming odds are that he loses the appeal. We have had such cases. If we are actually interested in character development, he needs to recognize that he did wrong and show that he is capable of living according to the Oath and Law. Saying that violating the law and trying to hook others is is not a major issue is a disservice to the S
