  1. That's a 25-28% increase. I wonder how they justify that. Were the initial prices of the centennial uniform set artificially low to lure people in? It didn't work...at least in my council. So far, I have only seen a handful of people wearing the new uniform.
  2. If he's been 11 since November, how did he get re-registered in your Pack for 2009? Doesn't ScoutNet prevent that?
  3. Any BSA temporary patch can be worn on the right pocket. I think the only restriction is not to wear things that are obviously not meant to be temporary patches (e.g., youth rank badges), or patches that have another designated use, e.g. BSA Lifeguard or 50 miler. I sometimes wear the patch from my first year at the council camp, 1966. The choice is yours...choose one, or swap them out at will.
  4. I'm just amazed that there's a PTA out there still chartering BSA units.
  5. Pretty sure this was never a National knot sanctioned by BSA. There is already a Webelos Den Leader's knot that serves a similar purpose. Local councils are not authorized to make up their own knots...that's probably why you can't find it any more.
  6. Trying to light our backsides on fire comes to mind...circa 1967. But that was a gas, not a liquid.
  7. It's also not clear to me if NancyB is talking about her son's Scout Troop (the one he goes to meetings at every week), or the Council Jamboree Troop. THey are not the same troops, although they could be led by the same person. I was going to suggest Beavah's tactic. Write a firm but polite letter to the Council President (he/she is the Chair of the Council Executive Board), with cc to the Scout Executive and COR of your son's unit. Request a response IN WRITING that the Jamboree Leadership consists of adults in good standing who have passed a recent background check and are NOT CURRENTLY listed on any type of "offender" listing. As Beavah advises, do NOT name names or make accusations. There's always a chance you don't have all the facts and stuff like that can come back to bite ya. They may think you are some kinda whack job, but when it comes to the safety of your kids, who cares? The other point made in this thread is that if your son has not already applied and paid a deposit to be in the Council's Jamboree contingent, it may be a moot point (i.e., too late).
  8. The title of the section refers to "Chemical Fuels"...not "Flammable Liquids". And the REST of the section outlines how to use liquid fuels (which, I believe are all "flammable liquids" - by definition)...safely. If the BSA intended to outlaw liquid fuels altogether, they should say something like "ONLY stoves and lanterns using compressed propane may be used." I interpret the part on "lighting fires" to mean campfires...not cooking stoves. And as someone else pointed out...there was "adult" supervision...the 18 year old staff member.
  9. "Boy Scout policies prohibit the use or possession of flammable liquids, and the leader of the local Scout council said two adults are supposed to be present "in all situations."" I must have missed that memo.
  10. Welcome, bksct. I find the easiest thing is to just click on "Today's Active Topics" at the top, and then bookmark it. That gives you the items that were active in the last 24 hours. YOu can go through the old topics at your leisure. Grab a cuppa coffee and join in! The only rule is "be nice" and no advertising! We do get passionate sometimes and have to be reminded on the Scout Law, but it's mostly all fun. The "Issues and Politics" section is for political and controversial things, but you can ignore that if you want.
  11. This could be a sticky (and unfortunate) situation. If the checking account was opened by the individual in their name only, the account belongs to them. You saying that the CO had no knowledge of the account is worrisome. They should have used the CO's EIN (tax ID number) to open the account (establishes ownership). If the ex-COR "hangs up" on you, you might have an embezzlement case. The IH (Institutional Head) should write a strong certified letter to the ex-COR demanding the turn over of the records, funds and signature authority.
  12. I am "east coast" and have also seen my share of hurricanes, starting with Donna in 1960. In 1969 my Explorer Post spent Labor day weekend in the mountains of VA helping with Hurricane Camille relief efforts, being airlifted on Huey helicopters into the field where we would hike the river banks searching for survivors. We found victims, but no survivors. Nothing on the scale of Katrina, or the wildfires of California or Australia, however. HiLo, good luck to ya...If we can do anything from the other side of the planet, let us know. Our Scouts are always looking for ways to "help other people at all times".
  13. Electronics are not the problem...lack of instruction in proper manners is the problem.
  14. Veeerrrrryyyy interesting.
  15. A few years ago, our District tried to convince some of our units that they really didn't need more ASM's than they had boys, and maybe some of them could become Unit Commissioners. That wasn't successful, either.
  16. It's my understanding that if a unit charter lapses, or if there is a gap for any reason, the clock starts over. Many units went into "hibernation" over the years (such as during WWII).

  18. I'm married...what's this "cash" and "checkbook" stuff y'all are talking about? As to panhandlers...just give them a card with the White House phone number on it.(This message has been edited by scoutldr)
  19. After almost 40 years of wearing the uniform, I'm still not sure what a UC is supposed to do. They keep claiming that "we are not spies for the Council". So then they show up with a clipboard and a checklist that they then file with the Council. (DUH...we're not stupid). Any time someone says "I'm from Council and I'm here to help you", I hold on to my wallet and run. No, seriously...I do understand what a UC should do...just never met one who did it. But the above is a WIDELY held perception. And perceptions are reality. When the District Advancement Chair reports to the District Committee..."troop XX has not filed an advancement report in 2 years"...there should be a UC at the next troop committee meeting. And the UC assigned should have enough experience with running units that they can diagnose problems and recommend solutions.
  20. OUR SENIOR EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN SCHOOLED IN THIS NEW PHILOSOPHY WHICH HOLDS THAT AS LONG AS A PERSON IS WELL VERSED IN A FEW SIMPLE RULES OF HOW TO HANDLE PEOPLE AND SITUATIONS, HE NEED NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THE PROGRAMS HE IS MANAGING OR THE INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGIES ON WHICH MANY OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE BASED. THIS HAS ALLOWED THE NON-PROFESSIONAL TO ACHIEVE HIGH STATUS AND HIGH PAY WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT. THESE MANAGERS CAN MOVE EASILY FROM ONE POSITION TO ANOTHER WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST PAUSE. AS LONG AS THEIR AREA DOES NOT BECOME A PUBLIC DISASTER, THEY ARE SAFE. IF TROUBLE ERUPTS, THEY ARE LOST; THEY CAN THEN BLAME THOSE BENEATH THEM OR THOSE WHO PRECEDED THEM. ADM Hyman G. Rickover, 1979 (please forgive the all-caps)
  21. At what point do we say "maybe we can no longer afford an SE who makes 150,000 a year" when membership and donations keep falling. Kinda reminds me of Wall St.
  22. Wherever you go...there you are.
  23. I can quit any time I want to...I've done it hundreds of times.
