  1. Tigers are fully a part of the pack and are expected to sell popcorn! And the parents appreciate the percentage that goes into their Scout account to help offset any scouting related fees. I think we had a few tigers this last year that didn't have to pay dues OR camping fees because of their sales. Of course our popcorn sale is November since our council doesn't seem to do show-n-sell.
  2. To interject my own opinion...I am against ANY organization devoted to removing MY civil liberties. I will fully support someone's right to their opinions and beliefs, but when it treads on mine that's gone too far. I do NOT have to hold someone's beliefs as equally true to mine, and accept them into my life. I only should accept their right to believe them. The ACLU is devoted to making the uncommon normal and the wrong equally right with the truth (as my rights give me to believe and practice them). Should government funds be allowed to go to a religious organization? Or a group that ha
  3. Wow...signing that contract was STUPID. It also forbids discrimination of services based on sex. Which means co-ed Packs & Troops would be required. Which is also against BSA policy. I'm suprised the ACLU missed that one.
  4. I am not sure what is available in your area, but here in Kentucky/Indiana, there are several public and private caves that do what is needed for the Geologist.
  5. Thanks for the responses, they have been really helpful. I don't like leaving things until I have a room full of new leaders in July/August with that "what do I do now" look!
  6. "If you going to be cyanical, EVERY knot or award has a $price. To "buy" the Scoutmaster Key award add up the costs for driving to meetings and campouts, unreimbursed costs for equipment and supplies, training fees, your handbook cost, mileage to Roundtable etc., uniform, the value of your personal time, and dont forget you annual registration fee too. Thats adds up to a lot more than a couple of Philmont trainings ($420 each)." Now who's being cyanical? The real cost of those knots is in volunteer time. Not simply the time of writing a check. I suppose next will be the argument that t
  7. Why does this remind me of the days when you could buy anything in Russia if you had money? A knot is supposed to mean something. An honor or award of significance. I do not like the way this has been going...you now have: The James West Fellowship Award - Cost $1000 Philmont Training Center Knot - Cost $900 + travel for two sessions. National Eagle Scout Association Knot - Cost $180 Are there any others I have missed?
  8. I misunderstood your post John-in-KC. And you actually pretty much echoed mine "If a council has organized a camp so that small units with only a couple of boys going can be covered, then it is not an issue." So it would seem that we are in concensus
  9. How do you preorder this popcorn? Our unit does not even receive order forms until right before the sale kick off; which only lasts two weeks this year.
  10. In spite of continued discussion on this topic, there still seems to be some confusion about "Two deep." Two deep leadership refers to "Two registered adult leaders or one registered leader and a parent of a participant, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, are required on all trips and outings." If a council has organized a camp so that small units with only a couple of boys going can be covered, then it is not an issue. Two deep does not apply to transportation (although it is the prefered method by most including myself). No one-on-one contact is the requirement that applie
  11. First of all, due to reactions to other posts, let me state that this is aimed at no one in particular, any quotes are used for examples. All posts are meant in true Scout spirit. Now that THAT disclaimer is out of the way "I'm reminded that the first point of the Scout Law is "A Scout is Trustworthy". What does such a policy say to Scouts and their parents about being trustworthy if camps aren't willing to trust that Scouts (and their parents) won't bring inappropriate t-shirts to camp unless told not too?" Interesting point and one I almost agreed with before realizing that we d
  12. JBlake, it is very true that the flag code carries no penalty. By the same token, me walking up to you an saying that you are a #@%^@$^ (insert your despised word here) also carries no LEGAL penalty. But we teach our children not to do that, at least I hope that you do, as proper manners and part of being a respectful citizen. Being a Scout is about respect for God, family, country, community, and environment. We teach these things to raise up good citizens, and each part, INCLUDING flag etiquete is part of it. Are they or we penalized for not following the flag code? No. But we s
  13. Has anyone seen the new Cub Scout Leader Specific training that has come into effect this year? How is it different from the one that we've been doing? And does anyone know if National is going to require all leaders be retrained with this to be constidered "trained"?
  14. I believe that this is a general policy for most coundil camps. Not that all councils are so strictly worded, but most do have it. Our own council words it as "If camp t-shirt is not worn, a Scouting related t-shirt should be worn." Our own troop chooses to set a policy of full-uniform or troop t-shirt with with uniform shorts at camps. Our pack is more leanient, using the council guideline that full Uniform, camp, or scouting related (unit, old camp or such) related t-shirt should be worn. Most likely the "National policy" statement comes from someone's interpretation of National's a
  15. Sorry about that Rip Van Scouter...I was having browser issues and it didn't show the post going through... To the best of my knowledge, the Cub Scout uniforms are not planned to change at this point with the exception of Webelos Tans. On the other hand...most of us didn't know much about this change until right before the announcement.
  16. Seems that this post has gotten a little bit off topic. Back on topic, now that the funerals are over did anyone hear if the disrespectful hatemongers of WBC actually showed up at any of them?
  17. Wow....Rip Van Scouter...how long have you been sleeping? Had to se the play on names. The is a new uniform coming out in August replacing the official uniform for Boy Scouts, Leaders, and Webelos who wear tan. It consists of new hat, new shirt, new pants, new belt, and new socks. Here is the link to the brocure. http://kudu.net/uniforms/BSA_newuniform.pdf
  18. At our last campout, we boy break his arm. While there were no issues, it got us to thinking about supplemental insurance. What are opinions on supplemental medical issurance? What about additional liability? Do you use it? Do you need it? Is it worth it?
  19. "OTOH, were I to see a Troop giving service hours laying sod or putting in plants for Extreme Makeover, Home Edition... that would be closer to honoring our Oath and Law. " Interesting that you should say this. When they were in Louisville, one of the coordinators for the builder was the scoutmaster of our Troop. He got the troop to help out there.
  20. While it is true that only BSA can determine their official uniform, a camp uniform is not a BSA uniform. I can go either way with this. My personal feeling is that a salute is only proper in full uniform, however that has been relaxed for Veterans and active duty out of uniform. I can accept either.
  21. With minor variations, uniform is defined as "A dress of a particular style or fashion worn by persons in the same service or order by means of which they have a distinctive appearance; as, the uniform of the artillery, of the police, of the Freemasons, etc." By that definition, "class B", t-shirts, coult be loosly considered a uniform since all members of a troop, pack, crew, wear the same. That said, the strict definition basically applies only to the BSA uniform. What uniform to salute in is very vague and not strictly covered in the flag code, but my personal feeling is that unl
  22. I personally find all this "let them call on a cell" amusing. Part of the camp experience is learning that you can be on your own, relying on yourself and your Patrol. Our Troop does not allow them to bring cell phones, video games, etc. If there is a true emergency or need, a land line is always available. Yes, I know we need to move into the 21st century, but that does not mean that these boys can't learn something from traditional camping? Personally I think that it is a good thing to get that electronic noise out of their head for a little bit.
  23. First, this was rather presumptious of the Cubmaster. Secondly, generally speaking, Cub Resident Camp (Wolves and Bears) require an adult guardian to be with the Cub. Webelos Resident Camp usually requires a 1 to 3 leader/Cub ratio. Since at Webelos Resident Camp, they usually stay in their own tent, you could technically get away with a 1-3 ratio and only one adult, although you should be very careful to maintain no one-on-one. In this situation "two-deep" would only apply to travel with the boys since there would be other adults at camp. A prefered situation would be two leaders fro
  24. I don't know about that, but we have had to put a few Webelos on high calorie diets to stay ahead of the belt loops
  25. That award would be absolutly perfect for these young Scouts! I hope that their unit and council do this.
