  1. This is a sad thing indeed. I have come to rely on this forum for the good advice and insight found here. I stay away from the Issues and Politics board. I am here for scouting. Eamonn and Bob White you both will be missed. Eamonn I do enjoy reading your posts, especially the ones concerning your relationship with OJ and your scouting experiences. Bob White your knowledge of the BSA program is spot on and is something a new Den Leader like myself needs from time to time. Let us know if you find another forum you will visit regularly. In the meantime please try to maintain a cheerful spi
  2. I remember when the notice came home from school to join cub scouts. I asked my best friend if he was going to join. He said no. I caved to peer pressure and did not join. I always regretted it. The next year when the notice came, again my best friend said no. This time I joined anyhow. Back then we used to wear our uniforms to school and meet after school at our Den Mothers house. I remember making Christmas ornaments at our den meetings. They still hang from my parents tree.A few years later I remember my first camping trip, the Webelos Dad overnight. We camped in lean-tos. I rem
  3. Its seems this topic has come full circle. I agree with Bobs statement Start early, Cubs in a complete uniform become scouts in complete uniform. Hence my chagrin with my experiences with the scout shops. Another thing, especially in cubs, is emulation of others. When a Tiger no one in my sons den wore the proper belt. I bought the tiger belt for my son. Low and behold one by one the other boys had their parents buy them tiger belt. Come the fall, I hope when the boys see my son and I in full uniform they will want to do the same.
  4. Kittatinny Mountain Scout Reservation Branchville NJ. I have not camped at KMSR in over 20 years but my son and I are attending a Cub/Parent weekend tomorrow! I think I am more excited then he is!
  5. Okay..... We have conflicting replies. Can someone please help me sort this out? Thanks!
  6. Laurie no one in our pack wears a full uniform besides the unit commissioner. I am planning on leading by example. I was able to find everything I need, including knee socks, to be fully uniformed. I will find everything I need for my son to have a complete uniform. There are several places nearby. I was hoping to do so before we went to camping this weekend. I am not worried about myself but for other parents who will not make the effort especially seeing the example in our pack being reinforced at the stores.
  7. You are all missing the point. Why would parent purchase or order or obtain an experienced uniform, for when they inquire about purchasing these items they are told no one wears them! The first lady made it sound as if wearing a complete uniform was a quaint tradition that almost no one follows! For a bit of clarification, the first place is a hobby shop selling scouting supplies. The second place is a satellite location for a neighboring council. Our council scout shop is very well supplied. However, its over an hours drive each way.
  8. We wonder why we see scouts without the uniform pants or socks. I recently went to purchase my son a new uniform. He just graduated from Tigers. The lady at the scout shop stated wolfs only wear the belt up. I stated I wanted the complete official uniform. She stated she heard of a couple of packs trying to start that tradition. When I asked again for the pants, she said she would have to order them since they did not stock them. Since there is a council scout near my office I told her no thanks I will obtain them elsewhere. So I go to the scout shop and they do have the pants, gre
  9. I am going to be a Wolf Den Leader next year. What are my hat options? As my username describes, more of my pate is becoming more exposed and I need protection from the sun
  10. Welcome back brother! I am in the same situation as you, only my Ordeal was over 20 years ago. I contacted my lodge and got my dues paid up. You may want to visit the National Order of the Arrow website http://www.oa-bsa.org/ and review the jumpstart area.
  11. Getting back to the original question... I made the change last week. I have returned to uniformed participation with my Tiger, soon to be Wolf, son. I have not worn a uniform since the spring of 1984. I was home from college and attended a troop meeting. Sad thing is, that was one of the last meetings for the troop. It folded a few months later. My old uniform is like a museum. The troop no longer exists, the council no longer exists and the OA lodge no longer exists. I hope I exist for a little while longer. 12. Thanks for the replies everyone. We blew our Blue & Gold budget and had to do some late fund raising resulting in a balance to be carried over to next year. The scouts who raised this money will be returning next year so the money will be spent on them.
  13. Is there a limit on the dollar amount a pack can carry over into the next year? I was speaking to someone who thought there was. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks!
  14. Ooooppsss!!! I stand corrected. Although I did have a hard time tuning it in. Well I'm going back to scouting topics. C'ya!
  15. They were actually buying the airtime, like a commercial. Then they didn't pay their bills. Now its gone.............
  16. Thanks for all of your replies. The boys will receive their bobcat badges at the June pack meeting. As far as working on the Wolf badge, my intention was to have them work on it, not complete it. I am planning of giving a little pep talk at the last Den meeting and mention some of things they could do over the summer including belt loops and pack activities. My goal is retention. I want to keep t
  17. Thanks FOG Most of my message got through and you answered my questions!
  18. I will be a Wolf Den Leader next year and have a few questions: 1) Can the boys work on achievements over the summer? 2) Can the boys work on electives before earning their Wolf badges? If so, can these also be completed over the summer? 3) Is it preferable that all the boys earn their Wolf badges at the same time or should I encourage them to proceed at their own pace (provided they complete their achievements by the end of(This message has been edited by Tiger_Dad)

  20. Back in the day I earned two NRA medals at summer camp and wore them on my uniform. I also have the West Point patch and neckerchief for that matter . I know the neckerchief has camporee on it and if I remember correctly the patch does too. Ill have to check my old offical BSA red jacket with patches on it *GASP* tonight when I get home.
  21. Although I would love to see every Scout fully uniformed, FOG I have to agree with you. I would rather have a boy involved in scouting out of uniform then not involved in scouting at all.
  22. If a CO can restrict an ASM can they also require uniforms???
