  1. I agree that you should have met with the SE.   No exchange of thoughts is not going to resolve anything.  Scout Executives have almost unlimited power over their councils.   If you try to appeal to Regional or National,  about the only way you can get the issue resolved in your favor, is if you can prove that the SE violated national BSA policy in rendering their decision.   I agree that unless you can resolve this issue through constructive dialog with the scout executive, enjoy your time off until an new one comes along.

  2. Interesting,  the number on knots somebody wears has nothing to do with how good a leader they are.  So many people downgrade scouters who wear their awards.  Why does the BSA create all these things if it is a big no no to wear them?

I have also encountered scouters who try to wear as little has possible on their uniforms, but make sure they wear their multiple wood badge beads, and look down upon others who do not have mutliple beads.

I abide by the uniform guide, and whatever other scouters want to wear is fine, as long as it is within the guidlines.

I will not lower myself to call other scouters names, based on what BSA sanctioned items they chose to wear on their uniforms.

  3. In the ideal world, the District would provide a list of MB counselors, but unusual MB's sometimes don't have registered counselors.

In this case, Welding, does the scout know a relative, or a teacher in the community that is a welder?   Have the scout ask that person to fill out an application as a MB counselor, and you are good to go.

  4. I have worked with scouts on a similar requirement for Enviornmental Science MB.  Usually the kids are unaware of the details until I add a few pointers?

    What did you see?  Grass

What kind of Grass was it?

Why is that kind of grass growing there, and not another?

What kinds of animals would eat that grass?

    A great teaching experience.

  5. My son did the Bronze Medal.  Took him 4 years to do the projects, plus another year or 2 of merit badge work.  He used the county Forest Preserve head ranger as his advisor.  Never got the troop award, the troop could have earned it by getting 2/3 of the boys to help on one of his projects.  He was never able to generate that kind of attendance.

  6. The job description of a Commitee chairman are written in numerous BSA publications.   I'm sure readers will be onboard shortly with exact page #'s and exact quotations, but in general, no a Commitee chairman runs the troop committee and has no duties interacting with the boys at all.

  7. I knew several kids in a previous troop who's parents did the "no drivers license until Eagle" route.  Some of them did it, but the ones that did, they only reason they did it was to get Mom and Dad off their back.  They wern't even interested in a ceremony to recieve the rank.  The desire to earn Eagle really has to come from within.

  8. I have to admit to some possible bias due to the blurring of memories with the passing of time.  But, no, I have witnessed the reading of scripts from the table holding the candles.   Can't shoot the arrow between the feet anymore (never saw anybody get shot in the foot).

The boys have to spend the night all together (youth protection).  All of the special effects are gone (too risky).   In general, a whole bunch of bland.
