Training Tips and Enhancements
Eamonn replied to Bob White's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
TIPS: Remember that not everyone drinks coffee or tea. Have someone other then the person who is presenting, keep check on the clock. Give signals when 5 mins. Or so to go. Don't give a handout to everyone and the read it. Wearing you full Wood Badge regalia, does sent a message. Not wearing full uniform sends a message ?? Pick only presenters who care. Even if there is someone better on the topic. The person who cares will do a better job. Eat lunch with the participants, not the staff. VCRs are cheap - Have a spare. (We used to use combos- But the local hospital donated TV's, so we now buy $50.00 VCRs) We have a file with all the handouts in. The person in charge of the course is to make sure that this is refilled. Next person in charge checks again. Remember how you were feeling at the first training, that you attended. The reflection process works really well after the training for the staff. People will pay good money for good training. Make it known, that you know what you are talking about and that you are not going to waste the participants time. If a question is asked and you don't know the answer. Admit it. Try and find the answer or tell them where to look. Don't try and bluff it. -
Just for the heck of it; I did a Google search on myself. I used my full name. While I did find a few sites with me in/on them. There were a lot more with the other guy, with the same name. This could be due to the fact that he is the Archbishop of Dublin, Ireland. Back to the topic. Bob White, has put me in the "Loop". As often is the case, I did not have all the facts. I can now see why he cares. What someone has done is not right. Which makes it wrong. Long before I joined Scouting at age 7, my parents went to great lengths to ensure that I knew the difference between right and wrong. Now that I have aged a little and have been lucky enough to have had other people who have loved and cared for me, as well as done their best to help make me a good person. I do try to live up to the Scout Law and Oath. At times, I fail. It is a very high standard. But I like to think that I'm getting a little better every day. I have pals who are in 12 step programs, and they tell me that they will always be in recovery. Just as they will never be cured, I'm never going to be able to get this down pat. But I will bet that that other Eamonn, who is not me, but the Archbishop is having just as hard a time. Most of us will never meet each other. And I have to admit that I was very tempted to quit this forum, due to all the non-Scout stuff. But like a moth to the flame, I came back. I do think that it is strange that we can get so many postings on Gays and Uniforms, and yet so few on Working with Kids!! I would hope that if you did meet me and were aware that I am who I am, and of course if I knew, you were you, we would be happy to spend some time talking with you face to face. Sad to say, try as I may to be kind, there are some people that I would try and avoid at all costs. The good thing is that even if I met these people, and didn't know who they were or who they were pretending to be. I would pick up on their lack of character, in a heart beat. Then I would make myself scarce. They could use any name that they like. The fact that they are not nice would shine through. So when dealing with people like that, Who really cares? Not I. Eamonn (This is me - I think, therefore I am?)(This message has been edited by Eamonn)

IMOHO. Two deep leadership is Two deep leadership. If a person is over 18 and is not a youth member (Not a crew member.) There ought to be two leaders in the car. As we or at least me, knows this will not always happen. At times the best we can do is go for no one on one. Try and keep two Scouts in the car at all times.Or keep two for as long as you can. I know this is not what the guide says. But .....

There is another thread, where the ID of a person is in question. Many people use a nickname or just a first name. Many of these are very clever, some are very cute. Alas, I am not that clever or that cute. If I say who I am and come from where I say I am from. It would not take that long to find out details about me. Of course, I might not really be me, and be someone else pretending to be me. Even if the details are right I might be someone who knows enough details to pull it off. If there is someone who has nothing better to do then have more then one ID, and wants to disagre with himself. - He may get a role in the remake of Soap; If that ever happens. Or there may be a need for medical attention. But again who cares? At the end of the day what harm can he/they/them do? As of right now.I am me. Happy to be me. And I am far too lazy to be me and someone else at the same time, While there are times when I wish, that I was somewhere else, and times many years ago when I had found myself in hot water that maybe for that very short time, that I wasn't me. For most of the time, being me is all I have to go on. My id, ego and karma are all doing fine. If there is others out there who are not so lucky. I really don't care. Just for the record at this time this is me. Eamonn

Am I right in thinking that all the National High Adventure bases have their own Grace ?

Hey Dave, I too thought of you today. I had a meeting with Sysco, the food company. As is my norm. I started on one of my pet peeves. - American Cheese. The Area Manager, send the Lady who was with him out to the car, she returned with a big box of Wisconsin Cheese. I am now the proud owner of a big box of Italian cheese from your neck of the wood. I will update you - If I ever get Her Who Must Be Obeyed, in the mood for pasta. I wonder if a bottle of chianti would be a big enough hint ?

There seems to be some misunderstanding about my posting "WAY TO GO GO LAURIE." Mark asked for some advise, as he didn't have access to the guidelines. He said that he wanted it quickly. Laurie, was kind enough to not only find them, she copied them word for word. My meaning of Way To Go, was meant as "GOOD JOB" I do hope that it has not been read in any other way. Eamonn

Training Tips and Enhancements

With so many more Power Point presentations, it is important to try and use the best possible projector. One that can be used with at least some of the lights on. It is also a good idea to have a print out to use as a handout, or copy the presentation to a disc. When we first started to use power point, we had an old projector that was donated. I prepared my presentation at home and in the office. Made all my nice note cards, only to find when it was time to present, I couldn't read them in the dark !! As luck would have it, I had a back up copy of the presentation and another laptop, so all was not lost. It is a good idea to practice your presentation under the conditions that you will be under. Even the colors, that look great on your home computer, seem to change when projected. This can cause problems with text. A pal of mine was using an overhead and thought that he would add a picture of a light bulb. Mike is a real nice guy, but no artist. When the Light bulb came up on the screen it looked like a giant backside. It woke everyone up. -
WAY TO GO LAURIE.

Your Welcome. When you get a minute please explain what a "Dead Beat Troop"is. You never know, there are a lot of people looking in here that might be able give you some tips on how to change the Dead Beat to UPBEAT !!! I do have a very long tale about a young man who enters a town and asks an old about the kind of people who live there. The old man answers, by asking " What were the people like in the town you came from?" The young man says that they were "Rude, lazy and dead beat" The old man says "Yes they are the same here." The young man goes on his way. Then another young man comes along and asks the same question. Again the old man asks "What were the people like in the town you came from?" "Oh, they were great, they helped each other, smiled and worked hard" The old man said yes it is the same here. It is a long tale so I won't tell it now. Eamonn -
I'm having a problem with Totems. As part of the Wood Badge course, the troop guides are to cover "The Art and Skill of Creating a Totem". Eamples of Totem designs and of mementos that can be developed to feature a totem. This is what is says in the Staff Guide. But there is nothing else. We will have a handout with all the Staff Totems. But does anyone know where I would find out more information about "The Art and Skill of Creating a Totem? Thanks Eamonn

Have been kind of busy all night. As a rule I have a TV on, as I read and go over the topics here in the forum. But tonight I played my new CD player and as yet have not seen the news. I did see somewhere that Lance Armstrong has the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. What a guy!!! I have read a little about him and all that he has gone through. I have never read or heard a bad thing. I wonder was he ever a Scout? Spent some time listening to the new 15 track Yellow Submarine CD. I haven't seen that movie in years. Was it 1968? Remember that it was at the time a "Must" and thinking that it wasn't that great at the time. But I was VERY young. Sir Paul Mc Cartney, was a Scout. I am willing to forget his past drug use!!! The things that he is doing to ban land mines is outstanding. Shame that he is so old, I would love to see him play the National Jamboree. Who do you think ought to be the "Big Star?" Must be really hard to find an act that the Scouts would like and who would fit the bill. Please don't tell me about Paul being in jail in Japan. - I know. Before we go there try and remember the concert he put together for Sept. 11th.

Hi Zhogie, Welcome. Howz about trying this : Try doing a search in Google. Type in German Citizenship Laws. It will give you lots and lots sites - Many will be of no help. But half the fun is looking? You might want to look in at: http:/www.usembassy.de/services/dualnationality.htm. Scroll halfway down the page. There have been changes in the German Laws, but this seems to be up to date. Most of the changes had to do with how long you have to live in Germany, before you can apply for citizenship. Best of luck with your Merit Badge. Do come back and let us know how it went, or if you found any real neat sites. Eamonn -
Joe Hardy, is the owner of Nemocolin Woodlands. He is is a big supporter of Westmoreland Fayette Council. We have both a trap shoot and a dinner there every year. Joe, was a Silver Beaver recipient four years ago.

What you really need to be really cool, is a Trained Patch. Super cool would be a Wood Badge?

What is your favorite way to be welcomed home after a week of camping?
Eamonn replied to Laurie's topic in Summer Camp
Isn't Life Good? Glad the little fellow had a good time. -
I was going to send this to Ozemu as a private message. But what the heck. Talking about digereedoos. To be honest it has been a long time since I had a chat about the olde Digereedoo. It is a great sound. Great to sit back with a can of Fosters and listen to the sound track from the Paul Hogen movies.(Not in uniform, not anywhere near youth members or on BSA property) There was an entertainer Rolf Harris, he was big in the UK, had his own show on the BBC. He played the Diggereedoo. Had a couple of hit records with "Two Little Boys" and "Tie me Kangeroo Down" Is he still around ? Many, many years back, when I was a Cub Leader in the UK, we made what we were told was an Austrailian instrument. We got a foot long wooden ruler, drilled a hole at about the three inch mark, threaded a string through the hole and whirrled it over the head. Making sure it wasn't going to hit anyone. This made a real neat sound. Have you ever heard of such a thing. The cubbies just loved it.

What is your favorite way to be welcomed home after a week of camping?
Eamonn replied to Laurie's topic in Summer Camp
OJ, has been started going to camp as a Cub Scout. At that time I was the Cubmaster and later on active with the Webelos Scout Dens. So we were at camp as a father and son team. Homecoming, was him sleeping, me driving. Her That Must Be Obeyed, always seemed overjoyed to have him back in the nest. Making a big fuss of him, and yes she would even cook - She hates to cook. I kind of somehow, someway got involved with both the district and Leader training, and he wanted to have his "Own" troop. So Summer camp, was just him. The camp is 45 minutes from home if Her That Must Be Obeyed is driving (Other members of the family can do it in less time if no one else is in the car!!) We go up for parents night on Wed. Take home mountains of smelly stuff. Depart leaving him with more then enough money to spend and cover any shortfall that there may be in the Council Budget. We used to get a full report of what had gone on. Now we get "Fine" Camp lets out after a light breakfast, so we stop on the way and have brunch (If you are in the area 7 Springs is real good) He is happy to be home Dogs are happy to see him. But he is so darn tired - And being 15 and having to bear the load of being right all the time. He is also like the "Old Man" when he is tired - Snippy!!! So we make sure that he is clean and leave him to do his own thing . Mostly he sleeps. Over the next few days, he opens up and tells us, what he thinks we need to know. Still being the kind, loving, nice dad I wait a day or so and then remind him that the grass needs cut. -
Welcome to the forum. It is a far, far better thing, that you do now.... Going to camp as an adult leader. I hope you have a great time. My understanding is that you may wear your Eagle Scout knot and the religious award on the adult uniform. At our camp there are O.A Reps in camp, they would be willing to take your money and get you signed up back in the Lodge. However, I don't know how it might work with your Lodge. Please don't tell anyone, but if it were me. I would make up my mind that being a part of the Lodge was something that I wanted to do and set this as a goal. Then I would do everything possible to do it. With this in mind I would wear my flap and sash. However, If it was just a "One Time Deal" I would think that is not such a good idea. As to the Camp Patch. There is something about it being a temp patch, that can be worn for six months. They sell a neat plastic holder that comes in all sorts of shapes, it hangs from the button. You could then wear it or not wear it as the mood suits you. Have the best time at camp, enjoy the time with the Scouts and from "ScoutDad" Your son. Enjoy.

Yipes this American is not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Here about 45 miles outside Pittsburgh (Even the people from Pittsburgh are unsure if there ought to be the "H" at the end of Pittsburgh.) We have the ynz. Ynz, is used to ask a group of people anything. For example; "Are ynz, going to camp?" It is similar to the "You all" and can at times be used to replace the " All you all" Which I heard being used by one of them there durned professiomals, who work in dat dare National Office. We also have the "Red" After a meal, Her Who Must Be Obeyed will inform my son that he has to "Red the table and then red up his room. While I have no idea who the esteemed Ole Snuffy Smith is. I do have some cause for concern. my mothers maiden name was Smith. I would not be keen to learn that I was related to the infunnel Snuffy, even if it does turn out that Snuffy was a goog ole boy. I do want to thank you for clearing this up for me. Now usnns can sleep well tonight. Hope ynz do too.

I feel a bit like a lame duck. I ought to be able to cash in on this bird theme. If only to egg it on. The Man Of Steele makes a good point. It does take a whole Council/ District to make an Eagle. However, it takes a lot of hard work and "Stick To It" From the Scout. Congrats to him. And your family. Of course now you can Shell out a few bucks on the court of honor
