Mr. Boyce
I think this is a big gap in the lineup. I'm tempted to have my tailor knock off the collar. Really makes the neckerchief work well.
desertrat77
Mr. B, I'm with you! Collarless shirt with an old-school, full size neckerchief...that's a uniform! In my closet I have a brand new early '70s shirt, with no collar. If I can ever find the matching era pants or shorts, you can bet I'll wear it! JoeBob
I liked the way the collarless short looked with a neckerchief. But I never liked wearing it under a pack. I think that BSA is trying to promote uniform wear in more environments the we did in the old days, and a collared shirt might get worn more often under pack straps. But the necker looks silly on top a collar.
Reasonable Rascal
As someone who was a Scout when the BSA introduced the collar-less uniform shirt in the "70's I have to say I much prefer the current collared style. RR
desertrat77
RR, I came from the same era...I had one of each as a scout. I think I wore the collarless more in town, and during hot weather. The collared, mostly in cold weather. If wearing a neckerchief (which was more often in town), the collarless worked best.
fireeagle29
I had one when I was in Cub Scouts!
perdidochas
If boys of the 70s hated the collarless (and I did), I can't imagine the boys of the 2010s going for it. I think they are ridiculous and impractical.
jrush
I think they won't and I think Joebob hit on why. It looks like the BSA is trying to promote full uniform wear in more environments for more activities, where the necker would likely get ditched and a collared shirt is more practical. Besides, if the troop likes the collarless look they can tuck the collar under when wearing the necker.
Mr. Boyce
Why not have or allow both? That's how they used to do it. Might even sell more shirts that way.
desertrat77
Exactly Mr. B. Both versions have their place.
Jeffrey H
I wore the olive green collarless shirt when I was a Scout in the 70's. The shirt looked good only when you wore the neckerchief with it because it was made to accomodate the neckerchief. However, the shirt did not look good without it. If I had to choose one, I would take collared shirt over the collarless one.
jrush
You guys really think parents (and scouts, if the lads are encouraged to work off the price of their uniform themselves) are going to be real giggled up at the prospect of buying another shirt and the sew-on accoutrements that go with it? desertrat77
If it is optional, well made, and reasonably priced, I don't see any problems.
John-in-KC
As someone who wore the 1960s/70s SS shirt, the collarless shirt needs a neckerchief. That's all I'm going to say about that.
