  1. Well, I might throw out the idea of using the Owasippe Scout Reservation in Michigan. It is the oldest continuously operating Scout camp in the U.S. It is on a large tract of land. I forget the exact acreage, but it is a big place, and has state forest land continguous to it. The camp is owned by the Chicago Area Council, which is trying to sell the camp because it cannot afford to run it any longer. Making Owasippe the home of Jambo would solve 2 problems. One, it would remove the risk of ever being forced to leave because it is on land owned by BSA. Two, it solves the problem of fundin
  2. From the Muskegon Chronicle, Sept. 28, 2008: Boy Scouts want out of Owasippe land deal Chicago Boy Scouts are trying to get out of a purchase agreement for the Owasippe Scout Reservation that sparked a zoning lawsuit and fears that the pristine property would be turned into residential subdivisions. http://www.mlive.com/news/chronicle/index.ssf?/base/news-15/1222596916279410.xml&coll=8
  3. Thank you SSScout for your question. The 5+ year effort of the Owasippe Outdoor Education Center (OOEC)to preserve the Owasippe property and to assure that Scout camping is preserved on the property would appreciate any financial assistance. The OOEC is a 501©(3) organization with it's Vision for the preservation of the property, including America's oldest Scout Camp, at www.ooec.org. Jim Schlichting Whitehall MI
  4. Lisabob writes: "If I'm wrong about this, I'll be the first to celebrate, mind you." Celebration may be possible but it certainly is too early to buy any champagne concerning the Owasippe property. Some time ago the good people of the State of Michigan were wise enough to establish, through a vote of the people, the Michigan Natural Recources Trust Fund. This is a fund that collects the royalties paid for the extraction of oil, gas and such resources in Michigan. MNRTF funds can only be used for the purchase of property and for improvements to property with natural resource
  5. I can only figure that your are referring to the sale of Owasippe Lake which to my knowledge occurred after the change in tax assessment, and some say as a result of the reassessment. Land adjacent to CAC's as I understand it was NOT reassessed at the higher rate at that time. That is to say all the property in that area of that zoning type was not reassessed at that time. >>The people who want to see the property evolve into a long term viable Scout summer camp/green space/conference center/environment research center/FFA/ 4-H/Campfire/church group facility have been attempting to di
  6. I wish this court case was about saving the camp but it is not. >>Chicago Council is selling the property and this entire trial is centered on the value of the property and a zoning issue. Nothing more. << The fight to preserve the "camp" found little support from the locals when it was determined that associating the Blue Lake Township issues with the governance issues concerning the sale of the camp under any circumstances could jeopardize the "zoning issue" case. The signs are still up "Save Owasippe" but if you read this entire thread you'll see that "Owasippe" no longer
  7. That is exactly what this is about. This Council President has to go. At their last Council meeting they have decided that they have no choice but to close the oldest Scout camp in the USA, Owasippe. Founded in 1911 and encompassing more than 5,000 acres. If you know the facts you will soon see that this council used to be one of the strongest in the nation. Now through shear ignorance they have so few scouting units that they cannot cover the cost of running this camp. The Owasippe web site is desperately trying to raise funds to cover the losses. But any business man knows this will not save
  8. I had perhaps my best week of scout camp camping the one summer my troop went to Owasippe instead of our usual camp. An incredible, amazing place that ran a fantastic program. I'm so glad the CAC figured this out and did the right thing.

  10. For the benefit of folks who are not familiar with this episode, I have been trying to access our history of this sad situation without success. Found this: lots of articles in ChiTrib: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2007-06-14/news/0706131277_1_scouts-plan-boy-scouts-board-members and http://flyingdingbats.wordpress.com/owasippe/ and http://ooec.org/news-info/
  11. Jschlich, My concern is to determine where your priorities lie and why. As for the testimony in court please remember that our SE and Executive board have been saying different things for the last 7 years much of which turned out to be absolutely the opposite of what they actually have done. The firm assurances that neither Hoover or Owasippe were being considered for sale while at that very time Hoover had already been listed and Owasippe was in the process of being surveyed prior to sale, being only one. If the "Council" is forced to accept a 7 million dollar reduction in their proce
  12. Living in Florida and camping every month year around, our troop found it was an adventure for the boys and an experience for adults to go someplace a little cooler. We normally went to NE Georgia or North Carolina, both of which have hills and white water rafting available. They also gave us a chance to interact with leaders and units from other places. We were fortunate to have a troop that was well off enough that money was not a big deal, so that really wasn't a consideration. One of our greatest experiences was a week of summer camp at Owasippe in Michigan. That was really a worthwhile tr
  13. Camp Owasippe (the oldest in the Nation) is still alive and well. http://www.owasippe.com/docs/ldrs_manual.pdf Many programs for all levels. Located in Blue Lake Township (directly accross the road from Camp Gerber) about ten miles east of White Hall LongHaul(This message has been edited by LongHaul)
  14. LongHaul, What a sad saga. I feel sorry for your council and the camp. What a money-grubbing shame. I did notice an ad for Owasippe in the latest issue of Scouting magazine. I wondered what had happened, since I've been following this issue from afar (really, just through this thread). At 1,000 miles, Owasippe is a bit far for us to go. Best wishes for a successful summer or two - maybe a couple of good years will save the camp?
  15. Well, it's update time again. Is someone doing the outline for a novel yet? The rank and file Plaintiffs won against the Council in Court concerning illegal governance by the Council President and Executive Committee. Council went ahead and filed in Appeals Court. National sent representatives in an effort to "mediate" and to get the parties to make nice with each other. Rank and file Plaintiffs informed National's representatives that it wasn't likely that they would settle anything since they had already gained a decision in their favor. National was sort of "blin
  16. ASM59, Look at what Owasippe Scout Reservation has to offer. It is located in White Hall Michigan which is about 200 miles from Chicago. From the Adventure Patrol for the first year camper (scout or tenderfoot) to the outposts for the senior scouts that are looking for a day or two away from the troop, we offer a good program. 17. Kahuna, Im a little surprised at your post. Being a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor you should know better than to enter a restricted water front area without permission and being a Scout Leader you should know better than to enter a water front without posting buddy tags on the check in board. I worked the water front at Camp Owasippe and at the very beach you were on but when it was Camp Wilderness before it was renamed Camp Blackhawk. Camp Owasippe has been in service since 1911 and we have not had any, not one, water front fatality we are proud of that. If you read a post
  18. Jr56, This has been an ongoing struggle since CAC hired a new SE. In case you dont know the SE has to be selected from a list National provides. The first thing our new SE did was to form a committee to study the "need" for CAC to own real estate for camping purposes. The second thing he did was to re district the entire Council. All the old established district committees and groups were broken up and realigned. While the new districts were shaking hands and getting to know who was who and repopulating all the District committees and Commissioner Staffs our camps were listed for sale.
  19. When fighting an uphill battle, it's always easier to walk away than continue the fight. That's exactly what some would like to have happen. Working from within is difficult, and can be very frustrating. There's no reason that Scouters such as jhk can't come here for some venting and support. A few of us, at least, are probably happy to read what he has to say. If others aren't, just click on to the next topic. BSA does many things very well; they also do a smaller number of things very badly. Internal control appears to be one of those less fortunate items in at least some parts o
  20. PLEASE - refer to my November posting. Owasippe and Chicago Council goverance are two entirely different matters. OldGreyEagle - sorry, splitting hairs about what is a "democracy" in the BSA is exactly what the Chicago Council SE and Board President got into trouble about. It was eleven Chicago Scouters, COR's and Board Members who went to Court to get the matter heard. The Court seems to understand "democracy" while others seem to want to protect the megalomania of BSA Professionals and Officers. Years of operating in the red and the inability of well paid Professionals to a
  21. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year JKHNY, we havent heard from you in awhile and I hoped you were well. I may be wrong, so I will be open to correction but as far as I underatand it, in all the training courses I have had, no one ever said the BSA had "democratic" representation of volunteers. I have been told its the COR's that elect the Board, not the rank and file scouters. Now, About Owasippe and the CAC, I have no idea whether or not what jkhny alleges is true or not. But, lets say that a "new board" is put in place and after about two years the new board goes to the mem
  22. "Because rules are for the guidance of leaders. They may be useful ideals, guides and goals, but they may not be necessary all the time, or there may be exceptions that will benefit the Scouting program. Take the "Counselors in Training" (CIT) program in many Scout Camps. Very likely it is a program that can be used well or poorly. Used well it provides additional manpower at low cost to Scouting that provides useful teaching and leadership experience to Scouts and benefits everyone. Used poorly and it can lead to poor quality experiences for the CITs and for the young Scouts they
  23. Nothing in jkh's mention of Owasippe said anything about the unit volunteer's owning the property or having voting rights on it's sale. In fact, the comment was only using Owasippe as an example of what people can find if they start looking around for BSA-related matters, ie, the comment that nothing is "local" anymore. Anyone who wants to spend the time to look around can find published stories about perceived problems with the attempted sale of the land, and, I would bet, the sale of other camp lands owned by BSA Councils as well. And that hurts BSA visibility, as do any of the stories ab
  24. nld, CAC says that Owasippe is the "oldest continuously operating camp". I guess that the "continuously" is important in the distinction. I don't think that the National office would put any of it's resources behind it, either, but I was just thinking that in the sense that Scouting in the U.S. has a lot of history behind it, some of these kinds of sites might bear some support. So, no, I don't expect BSA to support a camp just because it's "old". There are plenty of things in the U.S. that are "old" that are given support because of their historical significance to some groups. Ow
  25. Bob, no one said anything about the unit volunteers having anything to say about the sale of Owasippe. I said it would have been good to have a consensus before the sale was completed. That isn't required, but at least then there's a better chance that every idea for saving the camp could have been viewed. As far as the vote goes, there are conflicting stories about what actually occurred. It seems that a majority of the voting quorum were in favor of the sale. However, 3 of the approving votes were reportedly made via conference call, and it's unclear whether this is allowed under t
