  1. Pet pevy , we call it a whittling chip. The proper tool for whittling would be a wood carving knife which would normally be a fixed blade. But a lot of councils have outlawed them. Teach them on a real knife.
  2. Looks like about 50% over laps. The new stuff is better than what was replaced. Building - Citizen 1 - 3 2 - 1a, 1b, 8c, 12 (loyalty to the country is missing in the old) 3 - 9 sort of. It is on page 160 and 161 of the old book but it doesn't appear that there was an actual requirement. We discussed it. 4 - 10 5 - not in citizen, sort of in Family member 6 - not in citizen 7 - not in citizen 8 - not in citizen 9 - not in citizen 10 - not in citizen I like building better that citizen. It is less about the flag, pledge, national anthem and more about being a good citi
  3. There is also the religion requirement both years in the new program vs just one for the old.
  4. You are right since I know the current Webelos and AoL it is pretty easy for me to skim the new program and compare in my mind. High level (hope this helps) -cast iron - is most of the old fitness (which was nutrition, drugs, alcohol) with the building a fire and cooking from outdoorsman. The only real addition is food prep saftey. -first responder = readyman -stronger faster higher = athlete -Walkabout = parts of naturalist, outdoorsman and LNT. Althought the wording has changed enough that there quite a few differences it would be harder to line up 1 for 1 - better world = citize
  5. The more I think about it and look at it the less I have an issue with it (disclosure it doesn't impact me or my son. My son will be a Web 2 next year so he will finish under the old program). But if it did impact us I would compare citizen and building a better world I would only do the stuff that was missing in building a better world. I would also either complete readyman their first year or make sure I cover first responder their 2nd. It appears that you can count activities completed under the old program as electives under the new program. (In my mind that could justify marking off
  6. The way I read it. The concept of the current belt loops and pins are going away. The new adventure loops will be belt loops they are replacing the beads at tiger - bear. The new adventure pins are replacing the current webelos activity pins. So yes there will still be belt loops and pins but they are being repurposed.
  7. If the incoming Webelos 1s want to get everything completed in one year , i would schedule a couple webelos camping trips. You can knock out a lot of activities if you are spending Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday morning together.
  8. I like that aquanaut changed from a row boat to a canoe.
  9. They are not going to let the webelos finish under the old program? Page 26 http://www.scouting.org/filestore/program_update/pdf/Appended%20Requirements.pdf If they can't finish under the old program they end up with citizen 2x and skip readyman (first responder). Personally I think readyman 2x would be better than 2x citizen.
  10. How long is the award ceromony? We were in a pack of 150+ scouts (we probably had 15 dens (we had 5 tiger dens). It took awhile to get through the awards and people did not pay attention. Most people don't care that so and so earned a random belt loop. I argued (and lost) that these awards should be moved to the den level and given out at den meetings. If it was something the scout worked on at home they could even say a little bit about what they liked about it and what they did. Rank advancement would still be handled at the pack level.
  11. Rules, rules rules. The box will have basic rules depending on the pack and if you plan to have the winners advance to the council tournement. If you plan on having the winners advance ask council for a copy of theirs and mirror them. If you don't plan on advancing to council you need to determine what you want to allow or not allow. There is a cottage industry of faster wheels and nails. There are also different lubicants that some allow and some do not. does it have to be made out of the block or can you use pre cut blocks. You can also make the car faster my extending the wheel base. You m
  12. The OP implies that this is only an issue during the awards. So the rest of the meeting it is not a problem? It sounds like the difference is when the CM is speaking this is not an issue but when the den leaders speak it is an issue. I would be interested to see what happens if the CM gave the awards one month.
  13. You should be able to find free / inexpensive tournement software online. Don't limit your self to raingutter / pinewood. The backeting should work the same for all sports. The triple ellimination will be the hardest part a lot will only support double. I would think you could also find this for a smart phone.
  14. I would take pack and avg den size into consideration. A pack of 15 with 3 kids to a den is going to be a different experience that a pack of 50 or a pack of 150 (which is going to have multi dens of the same rank).
  15. The software is nice and it will make a faster day. Each scout runs one time on each lane and you go with total time. It is probably the most fair way. For a lar4ge pack I think you need to run it this way or it becomes a all day event. That being said the scouts enjoy the double or triple elimination method where if you come in last place 2 or 3 times in you heat you are eliminated. I don't think it is as acurate but it is easier for the young scouts to understand the process. It saves on the the cost of the track. .
  16. So you will use it for pinewood derby maybe a recruitment night. What else do you use it for?
  17. I notice that the current Tresurer is going to be the new CC. How much was he part of the problem? I think you are going to need a strong CC to get this ship straighten out. Is this person part of the problem or the solution? The other thing is who presents this to the parents? The outgoing CM and CC? Are they just stepping down but still involved with the pack or have their kids crossed over? If they are completely down the presentation might not be received as well from them. They other parents could feel resentful. If the presentation leads to resentfulness it doesn't help the long ter
  18. We have a AL track that we purchased last year to replace an old wooden one. The AL ones are nice with the electronics and projectors and such but it is a big expense for 1 day a year. I would look at something like this (I am not affliated with the seller nor have I ever used the track) http://www.pinewoodderbycars.com/Pinewood-Derby-Track-Kit-p/pd-900.htm http://www.pinewoodderbycars.com/Pinewood-Derby-Drag-Strip-p/pd-902.htm I would not borrower money to pay for a track over 6 to 7 years. That was only used 6 or 7 days. If you look at return on investment based upon the amount
  19. It is interesting that they cancelled the pinewood derby. Was that financial? I assume the pack owns a track and a place to set it up. Assuming the scouts purchase their own cars there really isn't any expense. Trophies? Either get them donated or make them. 3 pieces of wood you can build a little trophy that the car sits on. Paint them for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. For that matter the Webelos could make them as part of craftsman. We actually make a little money on pinewood derby. We sell hotdogs, water and chips (I think the food is donated). The cost of the car are included in the dues (s
  20. This is hard. How many scouts? I often wonder if it is better to disband and to collectively migrate to a healthly pack. You need to evaluate is there the right leadership to make this happen and how long will it take? Balance that with the age of you scout... on a personal level where is your scout going to get a better experience? It maybe great to rebuild this pack but from a selfish standpoint is you son going to get the benefits?
  21. How strong is you committee chair? The reason I ask is it seems like for some packs too much falls on the Cubmaster. In my mind the Cubmaster needs to be someone that can be entertaining and approachable to the boys and the parents. They need to be able to make the pack meeting engaging to the scouts. Therejob should not include all of the back office record keeping and planning thise should be the responsibility of the committee and ultimately the committee chair. In reading some post on this site it seems like some packs have the CM as the end all be all and responsible for everything.
  22. I think splitting the Webelos and Arrow of light into 2 different pieces is a mistake. Like a lot of packs most of our Webelos earned their Webelos rank in Feb at the Blue and Gold. We have continured to work on the AOL requirements March, April and May. We have not had much drop off in participation like I saw with the lower ranks (experienced in 2 different packs). I understand the tradition of haveing rank advancementment in Feb / Mar and I think if you are meeting 2x-3x a month and the scouts participate in either residence camp or summer camp it is easily accomplished but it also lea
  23. So how do they interpret "scout night" with professional sports teams? Alcohol is servered, the scouts are recognized, often involved participation with the National anthem, throwing out the first pitch, riding on the zamboni etc.
  24. We made one at our last pack out of galvanized tubing. It was in 3 pieces and around 20 some feet when put together. It had the pully system to raise and lower the flag. It went to every outdoor activity. We built it when our scouts were (wolfs?) and they had to do outdoor flag ceromonies. We figured if we built one the pack would always have it.
  25. I think that you should be prepared with explaining in your proposal in more detail. It doesn't call for additional training but you are calling for additional testing for the scout to prove that they are responsible. Are you going to have an additional test to prove that they are responsible, they test should be clearily outlined. The 2nd piece is with the knife itself. The only thing that is outlined is 6 inches or less. What other criteria are you going to follow to determine if it is acceptable? Since ytou are requiring the knife to be inspected by you that implies that they already
