Questions concerning Venturers in OA
OldGreyEagle replied to dana_renner's topic in Venturing Program
The official stance on this is that an OA sash is only to be worn at OA activities. Yes, its a cool looking item and looks impressive et al but the rules say not to wear it unless its an OA activity. See, just because a whole bunch of people do something and it becomes accepted practice does not make it right and the rules wrong, it just means a whole bunch of people dont follow the rules. Now, I could make a correlation to another hot topic on the forum right now, but I will leave that up to the reader. -
Questions concerning Venturers in OA
OldGreyEagle replied to dana_renner's topic in Venturing Program
It is my understanding that the OA sash may only be worn at OA activities. So, are you at OA activities when you wear the sash? -
Well Pounder you got your answer and I am not sure I would say anything different
-
I wasnt very clear, male Venture mambers may work on merit badges, but they work on the Boy Scout merit badges, there are no Venture only merit badges. SOrry for the confusion Bob, we will have to just diaagree on this one
-
Sorry Bob, I was being a bit of a smart alec. As I have stated many times I dont get the no camo rule at all. I thinks its absurd to ban camo on the basis it associsates us with paramilitary groups. We also teach back packing, survival skills, pioneering and a whole lot of other things that paramilitary organizations actually do. I would think acting like them is a lot worse that looking like them and no, I dont think the program should be changed just because we use the same skills as a paramilitary organization. Maybe kids like to wear camo becasue they like it and if a uniform is not required why not let them wear what they want.

Ventures dont do merit badges, so its not us

Some people are morons, and I wonder if any of them ever read the books. I know what you are referring to Marty, and I would be just as happy to have Jim referred to as Big Jim or just Jim. The reason I say some people are morons are because if you are familiar with Huckleberry Finn at all you know the charactor "Jim" is one of the bravest, most loyal, hard working, kind, sensitive people in the book. Twain wrote it that way to make a point. The Duke and the King were fine examples of Carpetbaggers. I can see replacing a word that has been downgraded to unaccpetable, but the entirety of the book portrays Jim in the best possible manner(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Hunting is allowed as a Venture activity, I wonder if the crew gets to wear camo?
-
Where and who said Mark Twain is Politically inCorrect?
-
What would you like to do to change the program? Wht are your thoughts?

Can't compare to Jack London's The Call of the WIld

I think for the most part Camo "themed" clothing is perfect for camping. Its usually rugged, durable and it tends to go on sale after hunting season. Whether its military green/brown/black camo or the hunters "real tree" camo its just outdoor clothing. I dont see it meaning anything else. I agree camo doest have a place with the uniform, but for outdoor activities where the field uniform is inappropriate, I see no problem with camo, as long as its not intended to mimic a military uniform.

Holy Mackeral, First a couple of observations, first of all, FOG what are you doing with three insigna guides in your Hotel room? I thought I was a basket case when it came to scuting, but I will print your post to prove to Mrs Eagle that there is at least one scouter who is more gonzo then I. Next, if its such an issue that a Memo is issued on the subject, shouldn't it be in the Boy Scout Handbook, Scoutmaster Handbook, etc or the very least mentioned in the Insginia Guide? Why is the only mention of it (so far) on a NOn-BSA site?

Order of the Arrow Membership for Venturing

Pounder, are you serious? April FOol isnt for a few more weeks, did you get a head start on it? PS I hope you are right! -
Ya guys know, the library is full if stories I don't know anything about, and I guess this is one of them. FOG, do you know where I could find a copy of Mr Williams memo concerning Camo? I use some equipment with camo on it and quite a few scouts in the troop use the field jacket and assorted items for all the reasons already discussed. I know the whole issue of Camo has been a topic here a few times and I have never heard about the Williams memo. Then again, not being omnipotent does have its drawbacks. Note: I am not talking about imatating military uniforms, just use of lawfully obtained and worn camo items.

Where in the BSA rules does it say you cant wear Camo? Of course, I am not talking about imitating armed services uniforms, I know of a troop that uses a camo print on their neckerchief

Stunts, Challeneges, Whatever you call them
OldGreyEagle posted a topic in Open Discussion - Program
Wingnut made reference to an adult going home from Summercamp bald if the troop wins the B.O.S.S. award. I take it to be a clean campsite award or something like that. SO, what kind of stunts do you do in the Troop? I have challenged the patrols that if they come in 1, 2, or 3rd in a Camporee or Klondike overall competition the patrol leader can hit me in the face with a pie, I of course buy the pie. I originally made this challenge 3 ears ago, and have had to psy off just once, although at the last Kondike a sled came in third so I will be pied again. What do or have you done? -
Have you ever seen the movie or play Bang Bang Your Dead? A screening of it might be interesting for your troop, after you have previewed it and obtained parental support of corse
-
Why not have all the scouts who will be attending Summer Camp elect a SPL for the week. Have the election in the next few weeks and then the Summer Camp SPL will have plenty of time to be oriented to the duties he will have. Why have boys who will not be there control who will lead the boys who will be there?

Getting Back On The Trail - Well Maybe??
OldGreyEagle replied to Eamonn's topic in Camping & High Adventure
What about a State Roundup of Crews? MAke it a three day week end, I'd love you meet you and OJ and the gang -
In the abscence of any documentation, I have to say the boy is up against it. If he could prove 40 or 39 merit badges I might, might you understand give him the credit of a doubt on another one, but not on 41 when only three are documented. Such a number must have left him with a myriad of memories of counslors and activities, can he name any? Can any of them verify they know this guy? Can any MB counselor be found that can ID the Scout? Lastly, you can help, but it really up to him.

I never understood that big deal over the stars anyway, those with superior written skills and masterful rhetorical presentation were recognized while base cellar dwelling intellect was soundly rewarded as well.
