  1. Yah, GW, yeh can keep your stinky old socks, but I'll bet you'll be glad of the guarantee when your zipper fails.
  2. pack, ahh - you're right. So much for speed reading
  3. OK, I found it. If you use the post office: Returns BSA National Supply PO BOX 7143 Charlotte NC 28241-7143 If you use any other shipper: Returns BSA National Supply 2109 Westinghouse Blvd Charlotte NC 28273
  4. pack, this is one of those occasions when I'm gonna disagree with you and side with Barry. Your argument is a straw man. No one has ever suggested (officially, AFAIK) that all 12 points carry equal weight in character development. That would be foolishness. In fact, don't we all like to ask candidates the favorite question: "Which point is most important" (to them), thereby implicitly implying that there is some inherent inequality of importance. I do belive that many Scouts and Scouters would honestly say that Reverent is the most important point. That's fine; I disagree (favoring Trustworthy, myself), but it's a subjective question.
  5. Let's see ... I've allowed crayfish, newts, centipedes, tarantulas, junebugs, and probably a few more more unauthorized critters. No one can call me a Mammalian (or Chordate) supremecist! But I sure hope I don't have to track down all those fellows and revoke their Second Class badges!
  6. My dad taught art there but by 1964 he was at LAVC. You really should get out your old stuff. I'll bet you have no idea what a mint Walika flap is worth these days! Have you thought of getting back into Scouting? There are lots of ways for us old guys to help the young fellows. I'll bet your current lodge would give you a warm welcome. WWW
  7. Yeah, at my last CPR recert I heard that this was probably on the way. Research was already showing that breathing was not as helpful as the compressions, but the civilian protocol wasn't ready to switch yet. I also heard this news on NPR this afternoon.
  8. Hello Don! Reseda? No kidding? I also grew up in the Valley and am a brother from old Walika, Ordeal in 68! Our troop also went to Whitsett in 65 and 66. That was great camp! We went to Chawanakee the next several years - also a great camp. Did you go to Reseda HS? My dad taught there in the early 60s. Are you still in Scouting? Welcome to the forums!
  9. I'm taking Wilderness First Aid this week end and I'm curious as to what the trainers will tell us on this issue!
  10. Cartoon bugs are one thing, but this was disturbing. I don't think it would play in the US. Which is strange, because we're so inured to violence on TV and in the movies. Maybe Americans feel it's OK to use sex to sell stuff but not violence. All I can say is I found it jarring.
  11. John, you're right, rudeness has no place in a BoR. A fellow may well use that type of response to probing questions from his peers, but a more appropriate response in an EBoR would be along the lines of, "My religious beliefs are personal and I do not choose to discuss them." Whereupon the questioner should shift tacks as suggested by Ed. The point is that some people welcome the opportunity to share their religious beliefs and others do not. It's a personal preference that has absolutely no bearing on the reverence of the individual.
  12. I dunno ... having someone get killed is kinda disturbing in a commercial.
  13. One mentor is the norm, but I see nothing amiss with this fellow wanting to recognize and thank three.
  14. Yep, that's the main ScoutStuff address, but is it the same one to return merchandise? I seem to remember there being a different address. All info about the BSA lifetime guarantee seems to have been erased.
  15. I can't find the address to send an old worn-out BSA uniform part for a replacement. Does anyone have this? Thanks!
  16. I daresay that the religious conservatism typical of the last several decades was not the context in which Scouting developed. Buddhist scouts were earning their Eagle long before deism became a BSA litmus test. I am not Buddhist, and I welcome further information if I am wrong, but my understanding is that Buddhism is not as monolithic as the western faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam with which most of us are more familiar. Buddhists from different regions of Asia will have different sets of beliefs; some do indeed believe in deities, but one of the defining aspects of Buddhism is that it is more of a life philosophy than a religious theology and that most Buddhists do not believe in any supernatural beings, including God/gods. That said, if a "typical" Buddhist Scout was asked if he believed in "God", he would probably answer "No."
  17. As Beavah might say, "Yah, dat's the 2,000 lb elephant in the room, eh?"
  18. This is one of the hats I am wearing this year. I'm still learning the job, but in addition to what LH says, in our district, responsibilities include coordinating and facilitating the Spring Camporee, Fall Webelos Woods, and Summer Cub Day Camp.
  19. Welcome Brian! Glad you've joined us. Now, Dunwoody GA sure sounds familiar. I'm thinking we already have another furum member from your neck of the woods. ?
  20. Yes, I admit, BW is of course correct. (choke, choke)
  21. Neil, Indeed we have a fellow like this in our troop. He is a fine Scouter but is somewhat myopic when it comes to religion. We have found responsibilities for him that do not involve sitting on Boards of Review.
  22. Well, technically, the FoE markers weren't erected to promote the movie. Rather, they sort of rode on the coattails of the movie's success. Back in the 50s and 60s, few people were objecting to this type of mish-mash of religion and government. It was a different era. Eventually, people started speaking up. One of the chief objections to the BoE markers (other than being on publically owned property) was the florid artwok that mixed together national symbols (flags, eagles, etc) with religious ones (Star of David, Chi-Rho) as contect for the 10, as if there was no real difference. That was the problem - the appearance of official endorsement of the Judeo Christian religion by the Government. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ten_Commandments_Monument.jpg
  23. If you're asking if the EBoR may ask a candidate about his belief concerning the nature of God/god/gods, I would say no. I believe that is personal. It is very similar to asking the candidate about his political views and who he is supporting for President. Both topics are personal matters that are beyond the reach of the EBoR. On the other hand, the Board may (and should) ask the candidate how he fulfills his "Duty to God", and/or his "Duty to Country". It is an important difference.
  24. I concur with packsaddle. ALL aspects of the Eagle rank should be done by the candidate, including filling out the paperwork. "Paperwork" is a distasteful but necessary fact of life in America, and Scouting helps the fellow prepare for life. I have seen a wide variety of Eagle applications and project workbooks. Some have been prepared very nearly professionally while others are more ragged. All according to the abilities of the candidate. The important thing is that he should do his best on all aspects of the project, including the documentation.
