  1. Probably not as much. Few things anger liberty-loving Americans as much as taking away their guns. Recall why American militias first gathered to stop the British army from marching on Concord in 1775. The British knew that disarming a population is the first step in subverting the freedom of a people.
  2. It also enrages and fortifies ordinary citizens who love liberty and the Constitution - not just gun nuts.
  3. I did. And thank you for your response. It is interesting to here how other camps do such things. I don't know if it is viable in all cases though. It certainly would not have been at my camp.
  4. I don't know about most camps, but mine certainly did not have the staff over 18 to make that work. But it is great of course if you have the people and the money.
  5. Well if the 1000 sq feet per person in the world takes up only Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, that leaves a whole lot of the world left . . .
  6. Maybe in Southern California. But in most of the US there is tons of open space.
  7. The MBC is supposed to review each scout individually in the camp environment as well. It is impossible to do for some areas that do hundreds of merit badges a week and only have one actual MBC. I don't know the solution. Do you have one John-in-KC? They probably told you somewhere in your military days you should not make a complaint without offering a solution.
  8. In the Book of Exodus, the Pharaoh was haunted by the presence and increase of the people of Israel and one of the oppressions he ordered on them was to kill their male children to stop their population increase. There is so much land in the world. You can give each person 1,000 square feet of space and fit the entire population of the world in Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. People are the world's greatest resource.
  9. Call the base Public Affairs Office. I am sure they have one and their number is probably on the website.
  10. When I was Ecology Director I trained my staff during staff week and checked out their classes as best as I could during the summer. I had a signature stamp that my staff would use on their cards.
  11. So basically any denomination is ok as long as it is not one that believes it is the only true faith? Sounds a bit hypocritical by some out there.
  12. Even at camps which offer blue card, staff under 18 does not counsel the merit badge. The card is always signed by an actual counselor over 18.
  13. What is ironic is the couple started a Muslim American TV channel to fight sterotypes against Muslims. Its almost laughable.
  14. How many of you have heard of the beheading in Orchard Park, NY last week?
  15. Just don't let any more in our country.
  16. This is why the quota acts were good.
  17. Our camp did about 400 in three lines, it wasn't too bad.
  18. Not to get off topic. But are you serious about Lutherans? Seems a bit odd.
  19. Depends how big your camp is and how many serving lines you have . . .
  20. I thought Kudu's comment was funny and perhaps a bit valid. I guess you can't offend the kitchen staff love-fest either. ; )
  21. I assure you I was always there at least as much as they were. The CD and the PD gave the area directors the discretion on how to allow time off. I saw many areas abuse this privilege. If you cultivate in your staff a pride that in their program area and the fact that they are doing things better than the other ones, they do not mind and even brag about it. I do not like the idea of staff swimming and shooting while scouts are in program areas.
  22. When I worked at camp we didn't have a staff rec time. There was a siesta when all the scouts returned to their camps after lunch, but all the staff did too. Staff could get out to other program areas during open program time with the approval of the director. I worked as a young man as you mentioned, three summmers 17-19. I never really participated. Especially not the last two summers when I was the Ecology Director. I had work to do in that area. I didn't let my staff get out much either. Most of them didn't really care too and enjoyed being at Ecology. One would always pester to go s
  23. Never heard of that. As a director I was busy every night during the week! I don't think I would like a night in the kitchen. Also never really liked staff heading out to other program areas to shoot, swim, etc. Some of my young Ecology staffers would want to go away often. I reckon staff should stay in their own areas and provide the best program/services to scouts and scouters.
  24. Thats another thing. Always be on time! And by on time that means at least a couple of minutes early. When I was an Area Director I made all my instructors wear a watch and they were supposed to start all their classes/activities exactly on time. If there were special conditions, such as the first day with many scouts coming in late, there were, at the start time supposed to notify everyone there that they will be starting a few minutes late and give the reason.
