  1. he can eurn merit badges and learn life lessons at tenderfoot to. sounds like maybe thats where he realy belongs?
  2. I respect the scoutmasters experiance. but if he knows his stuff, then he knows that they are not sugested requierments, they are requierd requierments. as for judgment calls its true we have all probubly made a few. and im sorry if this comes off bad, the board made the wrong desition and you should have held your ground and not been convinced. passing this scout is not helping anyone. all it has done is: -show the spl that he can sign off what ever he wants even if the work is not done. -show the boy that mommy will always be there to protect him. -show mommy that the rules don
  3. its not that big a deal, to me things on the shirt is a big deal, and you wear bsa pants with a bsa shirt. the belt? come on gw if its got somthin bsa on it who has ever made it a big deal. ok ok maybe its not reg. but its better than wearing 2 por patchs. =)
  4. sounds like the SM maybe taking to many libritys with the advancement requierments. seems to me that telling the mom he eather camps or dosent advance would be the quicker way to get the kid in the woods. maybe she should go to, see what its all about, just for the first campout anyways. as far as PL goes that is why he has to be elected. if the patrol would elect him they may have been doomed from the start. the hardest part is reminding them its not a popularity contest and he will actuly need to work for them...owell we let them make there own mistakes and they learn from them.
  5. I cant speak for Gold Winger, but I asked why to try to understand what she was planing on helping with. it sounded to me at the time that she was mostly intersted in camping. which the pack shouldent be doing much of, which lead me to beleve that maybe she wasent the most commited leader.
  6. There is a right way to eat in polite company which isn't taught much anymore. -keep elbows off the table, use your napkin, close your mouth when you chew.... There is a right way to behave in church. -dont fall asleep, lisson revrently There is a right way to dress for a funeral. depends on who it is, but black, conservitivly. There is a right way to wear a uniform, any uniform be it Army, Navy, baseball, basketball, or BSA. -millitary, hats off inside, squared away and probuly a lot more -baseball, uniform tucked in with belt and baseball pants -BSA, thats why we h
  7. Brent, that is amazingly refreshing to hear. I apologize if I came off a bit angry, I have just seen to many troops formed because the parents want to do things there way. then the troop folds when there boy gets his eagle. Im glad to hear that the patrol method is alive and well in your troop, and I would love to see how it all turns out for you. but just remember that all us big troops arnt bad. however it sounds to me as if you made the best choice in not staying with your old troop.
  8. Thats great, More kids in scouting are always a good thing. I come from one of the troops you speak of. We have 53 registered youth, although only about 30 show up to our meetings and campouts. I would love it if all the boys would show up every week, and we do put allot on attendance, but these kids have jobs and school and sports. But it is important to know that they are all advancing at there own pace and its not the same 30 kids every week. It is defiantly a problem we are looking to correct but saying that because 12 of 12 are going to summer camp is not as amazing as it sounds.
  9. ok so take my responce, remove the word "why" and its just an opinion on the question.
  10. I would give the scout credit for the one job he did well, but not give him credit for the other.
  11. in that case yes I am not afraid to tell him no I wont sign it off. however, im going to take into acount how hard he tryed, and if he asked for help. the other thing to consider is that hopefuly we know are boys well enuff to know who can handle two jobs, and who can't. Im not going to tell them you can only do one, but I do love leading questions. Im not saying thet every scout needs two PORs Im just saying that it can be done.
  12. Dont think theres anything wrong with it, but I have to go with Gold Winger on this one. WHY?.... Cub scouts is really more of family affair, and as far as her son goes, I dont know that the current cubs need or want some older kid around telling them what to do. She may also find that if she sticks around to long there will be arguments. packs change and shift with reshem change, and in the long term future Im just not convinced that she would be able to easily fit in. That said, if shes going to stay. I think the idea of having a full time tiger leader is great.
  13. I dont beleve ive ever seen anything from the BSA about this topic, my personal opinion would be that a boy realy should hold only one position at a time. however I dont think that it should apply to DC. to explan in all other positions the boy has dutys to his troop that happen mostly at a troop meeting or in prep for a meeting. in contrast with a DC the boy is going to a sepret meeting and in most cases the den leader has all ready done the work. witch puts the boy just there to support the den. so I think the two actualy go to gether vary well. a patrol leader needs the skills of a DC
  14. I will be mowing a lot of grass. but for a week and a half in july I will be backpacking in yellowstone with the troop.
  15. The assets of a troop or pack are the legal property of the chartered organization. Agene this very state to state, but the majority of the time you would use the CO's number for sales tax exemption. In situations its best to check with the local council, as you may be expected to use theres.
  16. maybe uniforms arent requierd, but if your going to wear it, show it some respect. wear it correctly or dont wear it at all!

    New Uniform?

what I have herd is that the "boy scout action shirt" was a test of how we would respont to that type of shirt. so im thinking its going to be some beefed up version of that. http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=APPAREL&C3=ASHIRTS&C4=&LV=3&item=615AS&prodid=615AS^8^01RTL&
  18. although I can not agree that the 12 points are not taken at an equel importance. A God question is compleatly exeptable. as everyone else has forgoten let me remind you that a scout pledges his honor to do his duty to god. now as for what "god" meens im cathlic so I know what it meens to me, but I think its different to everyone. these days it seems as though the BSA has widend its stance to almost anything as long as the boy has some kind of beleif. remember, its only atheists and sack ticklers that we are suppost to be agenst. watch out for the "known or avoud" cuse
  19. our council protects its self by requiering a "talent release" foarm be filled out, when comeing to resident camp and major council events. so that we can use any and all pictures of the event without legal problems.
  20. true enuff, many councils have there own use policys. the only national policy I know of is that, uniformed scouts are not to be photographed with political candidets. we had a problem in witch a picture of a uniformed eagle scout and John McCane surficed in the local paper after a speach. it went all the way to national. we and the paper were contacted by the national councils legal department.
  21. I cant apoligize for someone I dont know, but I would have your son ask his scoutmaster. hopefuly if I am correct he will consalt the the guide witch will tell him to wear just the pl badge with the dc cord. however it is important that your son do the asking, to help with his growth and independince as a scout. ~thebigguy
  22. thats true pack overnighters are permited, but bear den overnighters are not. Im not saying we all follow the rules all the time, Im just saying, that is the rule. in addition, and please dont think I hate cubs, the BSA is absilutly anti cub camping. the reasoning it that camping is a privlege that the cub can look forward to in boy scouting. this helps with getting boys into boy scouts, and to insure that cubs dont wind up having a bad experiance with camping, that will discurage him from moving on to, boy scouting. dont ask me to give you a sorce for this statment. call it
  23. true it may be be best to defur to your DE on this one. do you concider sleeping in a cabin on boy scout owned property to be camping? you are still in doors, you still have electricity and all amenitys, but I can tell you that atleast in my camp that IS camping. my opinion there is no question that it is camping. witch puts the emphasis on "overnight"
  24. the senior Patrol leader, and patrol leader are youth elected positions. the large group is devided into groups of around 6 to 12 scouts. each of these smaller groups elects a group leader. " patrol leader" in charge of the meeting to meeting oporation of the troop is the senior patrol leader. he is elected by the entire troop, and the patrol leaders report to him.
  25. now we are off topic. In responce to the origanal question. try not to show your aggracation, I would at the next meeting show the boys how it should work. then rather then telling them what they did wrong, ask them what they think they could have done better. chances are they will see there falts and do better next time. we feal your pain... sometimes working with youth can be aggravating, you just have to make sure that the fun you have always outways the aggravation. otherwise you will not give it your all and the program will suffer
