  1. "When they finally realize that an hour a week isn't so much, ask them face to face to become a leader because you need their help." Who are we trying to kid? I only have 1 hour left after scouting. I posted a reply to this on the Cub Scout board. Tim Dyer
  2. In my pack, we had a parent meeting right after a pack meeting that only took about 15-20 minutes. At this meeting, we explained that in order for their boy to have fun, we needed help. Then we passed around a signup sheet for upcoming events. They could be the chair for that event, help plan the event, or help run the event. Some of the parents signed up for one thing while some signed up for all three for an event. We had another signup sheet at our blue and gold banquet for summertime activites. This has worked very well for us. Tim Dyer Pack56
  3. I just got the patch from KoreaScouter. It is pretty cool. I have never traded patches before. I will be sending out mine in a couple of days. Tim Dyer
  4. I understand it to be, anytime a unit goes out on a trip, even to a council owned camp, they are required to have a tour permit. In my council, they also use the permits to keep track of which units are active. Tim Dyer
  5. Do you wear the dangle ribbon with the flap patch? If so, Doesn't that kind of seem redundant? I have even seen a few OA patches the same size as the square knots and worn in the same place. Anyone else seen these? Tim Dyer
  6. I have a question about the dangle ribbons. As scouters, do we wear them? If so, When? and on what part of the shirt, left or right pocket? Tim Dyer
  7. Bob, I am not saying wear it at all times. Only special events such as court of honors. Especially the court of honor in which the tap outs occur. Tim
  8. Let us not forget that you can wear two sashes. The OA sash over the shoulder and the merit badge sash on the belt. But the rule is that they can have the merit badges on the back. Tim Dyer
  9. I believe that while the two should remain seprate, I feel that both boy scouts and girl scouts could benifit if some of the programs were similar. I know some girls that are always wanting to things that the Boy Scouts are doing, and there may be some things the boys could learn from the Girl Scout program. I am not familiar with the Girl Scouting program, so I can't go into depth. Seperate but Equal. Tim Dyer
  10. I have the Chickasawe council patch from West Tennessee. I would like to trade if you are interested. Tim Dyer
  11. I just signed up to be a merit badge counselor for my district. I know that a lot of adults in my area only sign up to do it for thier troop. I feel like I need to be out there for the boys. I only signed up for 8 merit badges. Need time for my own family. Tim Dyer
  12. I have to disagree with your statement that you should only wear patches in association with the level you are with (adlibed). If you were correct in this, you would not be able to wear the Arrow of Light award on the scout uniform because it was earned as a cub. I know that we are talking about the patches that don't go on the uniform, but the principle is the same. Throughout the years I have been in Scouting, I have enjoyed everything I have done. I wear ALL my patches on my jacket...Cub and Boy scouts. The boys in my pack see the things I have done and things they will one day be avle
  13. Well, I must disagree with ya'll. My son is a Tiger. We didn't start selling popcorn until 2 weeks after everyone else. My family bought a little. But my son, decidied he wanted to go door to door. I went with him every step of the way. When we were out, I noticed that no other scouts were out. My son ended up selling over $1700 worth of popcorn. We have people asking for us to come by next time so that they can buy more. As we drive around , my son says "They bought popcorn" and "Hi, Mr. ----". He is normally shy, but with him getting out and going door to door, he has shown that
  14. I have to agree with Bob on this one. Could not have said it any better. Tim Dyer
  15. Our pack is "new" this past year. I say new meaning it dissolved and we got it going as a new pack. All new leadership. I will be the first adult to have a "brag jacket" and hope to encourage others. I know when I wear it to meetings the boys ask me about them. Since getting and wearing mine, and my son his, I have started seeing a few more boys start to wear them. The only problem I will have is that later on, as I get more, is I will soon run out of jacket space.....I know I will them move up to a "brag trechcoat" Ideas? I know I could put them on a blanket. I don't want to pu
  16. How about: What is the outdoor code? How many different covers have been on the Boy Scout Handbook since it's first printing? Tim Dyer
  17. What do ya'll think about putting ranks on the jackets? For example...all of my cub scout ranks and arrow points, the arrow of light and the last rank I earned in boy scouts...Life. I am torn on this, while I would like to have them on there...I think the other patches on the jacket would take away from them. Thoughs? Tim Dyer
  18. But thanks Bob. I was wanting to put them on there. I don't think it should cause too many problems. Tim Dyer
  19. It is not an "offical" jacket. It does however look exactly like the nylon red ones sold through the scout shops. I will mostly be wearing it with my uniform but not as part of it. I will be wearing to and from meeting, outings, etc. I feel that I earned and work hard for them as a boy and now as an adult, I want to "show them off". When I was a cub, I had a brag vest which I have now passed onto my son. I still want to "brag". People do come up and inquire about some of them...especially their boys. Quite a conversation starter that leads to the discussion of getting their boy in
  20. I have a question. I am in the process of putting all of my old scouting patches onto a jacket. I am a member of the OA. My lodge has changed the design and look of the pocket flap patch. I need to find out if it is okay to put old patch on my jacket? Thanks, Tim Dyer
  21. ScouterPaul, I agree. I am registared as the Tiger Den Leader. You are right in saying we all wear different hats. I do the Pack Trainer away from the Den but my main focus is the den. BobWhite, I teach the youth protection, I know that in order to become a leader you have to go through "checks and balances". I also know that sometimes that can also overlook things. I am not saying that the boys safety needs to be compromised. I am a Den leader before all else. The boys don't even see the Pack trainer side. As for next year...aren't we all Asst. Cubmasters when we are a
  22. I am currently the Tiger Cub Den Leader and Pack Trainer. Next Year I will be the Wolf Den Leader, Pack Trainer and Asst. Cubmaster. I know that these are not committe positions, but I am part of the pack committee. I am not sure what the BSA policy is on this matter, but I would think exceptions need to be made to insure the boys get a high quality program. Sometimes people, like myself, fully immerse themselves in scouting, taking on 2,3, or more rolls. When good leaders come along, whyy try to limit their involvement? I agree that no one person should monopolize a unit, but if a
  23. I was wondering if anyone knew if a Cub Scout den could have their own custom-made neckerchief. I know that a lot of Troops have their own. Does this also mean the Cubs MAY be able to do this. I have a den of Tigers that will be moving onto the Wolf Den, I will be as well. I thought it would be great to have them make their neckercheif and slides before the crossover. Any input is appreciated. Tim Dyer Pack56 (This message was not edited by OldGreyEagle)
