  1. My EagleSon collects vintage BSA items. He recently acquired a pair of BSA oxford shoes in new condition. These were NEVER worn. We cannot find any reference for price or value. He does not want to sell or otherwise get rid of them, he just wants to know what the value is for his records. Thanks for any and all assistance.

  2. In the wake of Little Sioux and the tornado, we have a great opportunity to demonstrate what scouts do! They were tent camping, building football goal posts (great lashing on that one!), and hiking. Use their example for anyone who will listen. We did! We recruited a new troop with one boy age 14, two 12 and two 11 plus more joining soon. You can recruit if you just tell them what you do. Our summer camp will be our troop camping at Little Sioux (hopefully) for a week. They will do T21 stuff and wilderness survival, orientieering, and the like. Who knows if they will finish merit badges, but they will have FUN!!!!!!!!! Isn't that the whole purpose of this?

If the boys are having fun, they will tell their friends who will want to have fun, too. Look at why BP started scouting. It was for "inner city" boys to experience nature and learn real skills. Isn't that what we do still? Most of our boys are "city kids". The original idea of scouting is even more important in our century as it was in the last.

  3. Thank you all for your advice and assistance. Our new Webelo has joined, earned his bobcat and is almost finished with his craftsman pin. He loves this scout stuff! I am discoving I have learned more sign than I thought. The boys are doing well with including him in all conversations. We look forward to camping with him later this summer/fall. Thanks again.

  4. I think it is a chicken and egg kind of argument. Boy Scouts come from Cub Scouts because that is where they are recruited. I have seen many, many, many Cub scout recruitment nights at schools and activities but I have NEVER seen a Boy Scout recruitment drive other than a Webelos cross over.

Our new troop consists of 2/3 new to scouting boys. They were never cubs. We are hoping to add another 5 or 6 boys the same way. The boys are asking their friends or the friends hear about the fun the scouts are having and ask to come.

  5. In reaching out beyond the "core demographic" do you lose the ones who have made it what it is? Will BSA no longer appeal to intact families who are increasingly being made to feel as though they are not "normal".

In another thread, someone said only 7% of children live with their own, married parents. Did I read that wrong?

  6. How about the other side of the coin?

I have had five pregnancies. Three of them were "toxic" in that I had pre-ecclampsia or toximia. In the last pregnancy, my ob suggested an abortion since I would not be able to carry to term and the life of the baby was in danger. I asked her if she was telling me to get an abortion and she said yes.

I calmly finished the appointment, walked out of her office and found a new doctor since I could no longer trust her to work in the best interests of the baby. Just for the record, the pregnancy lasted a total of 29 weeks and our daughter was born weighing a scant 2 lbs. She is now five and doing fine but I knew the odds and made my own decision.

I sought a doctor that would not perform abortions so that I was sure that every effort would be made to save my daughter. Do I not have that right?

If we do not allow doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals a choice in the type of medicine they practice, ie pro-life, we reduce them to indentured servants. I know lawyers who will not do divorces because it is against their beliefs but you are not demanding they lose their licence.

Every law we have is a question of morals. We say it is not moral to murder, to steal, to batter. Why are these morals acceptable?

  7. I don't mind the training that is required for positions. I mind the amount of money needed. Commissioner college, University of Scouting, Baloo training, WoodBadge, OLS, Scoutmaster fundementals, Cub Scout fundementals, uniforms, plus all the expenses just camping with the boys, the cost of the boys themselves, and then multiply it by two for both parents involved and it adds up to a lot of money. My husband has had to put of WB about 4 years now because of money. The choice is either WB or summer camp for our son or daughters.

For a lot of potential leaders, the cost is the main reason why they do not attend. I do understand that training costs money to put on.

  8. Specifics, eh?

    1) How many healthy units are in the district? Percentage

    2) If units are lost, what is the reason?

    3) How many units (or percentage, thereof) are camping/day camps?

    4) How well attended are roundtables? Percentage of units

    5) How many "roundups" or recruiting nights are held in district?

    6) How well attended are the camporees? first aid meets? NYLT? commission college? university of scouting?

    7) Percentage of trained leadership.

  9. I find it interesting that no one considers all of the other issues that will arise from this, i.e. "the law of unintended consequences". My best friend is in Child Support Recovery here in Iowa. She is bracing for a nightmare in custody and support reviews. How do you do a paternity test on two women? If they adopted the child before they "married", how do you hand child support afterward? Trust me, this is a big problem. There is no case law or precedent for this. There are other unintended but real issues that will arise.

I find the comparison to segregation odd. I can tell by looking at a person what race or gender they are. I cannot tell what orientation you are unless you tell me. I might wonder, but I cannot know. Thus, I cannot discriminate against you unless you bring it up as an issue.

I have heard all about the tyranny of the majority. What about the tyranny of the minority? Should the values of the majority be sacrificed for the wishes of minority? I am for equal rights but whose rights are more equal? I am told I cannot discuss or show my religion in the workplace, the school, or in the public square because I might offend but if I am offended, I am told to change the channel, find a new job, or go somewhere else.
