Im sorry I didnt see this earlier. I spent 2 weeks Camping in Baton Rouge with my Ambulance Company. We were hosted by a Church/School/Knights of Columbus, and their Boy Scout Troop. My tent was borrowed from the Scout Troop, and while I didnt get much of a chance to interact with the scouts, I just wanted to say Thanks to the unit, and to thank them for being so Helpful, Friendly, and Kind, in helping feed us, as well as letting us use their meeting space for sleeping quarters. Im currently a member of the District Committee, and havent really received any training as an adult. There is also a possibility I will become a scoutmaster in a local troop soon, but that isnt finalized. Im curious as to what training courses I should attend, both ASAP and in the future. Ive started to list a couple of things, and am looking for input, and also trying to find out what Ive got to do to put that pretty trained strip on my uniform. Im a big guy, and looking for scout color pants to wear while camping, etc. I find that the crotch of my pants tends to wear out and I would like to save my expensive scout pants for formal occasions. I know the uniform police will probably shoot me for this post, but what is the 8th point of the scout law? (Thrifty) Does anyone have a suggestion as to brands and colors??? One of my next steps is to call a uniform supply Co. in California, and see what trousers they have in LA County Sheriffs Green (I believe it is the same shade). Any other suggestions??? Jon

I spent some time in a troop like this. My troop loved the idea of a "boy run troop" Until they realized that THEIR boys didn't want to run the troop, and the new SPL did want to run the troop. There was a lot of strife, and my family, and my best friend - the New SPL, and a few other scouts moved on to another troop. Committe Training is needed, as is some beating over the head with hiking staffs. Is it going to kill the troop if THIS YEAR's webelos go somewhere else? I used to own a nice red turtleneck, and my father and brother still wear them. Since I am now a district Committe member, I wear a white turtleneck under my short-sleeve shirt. Another point to make, regarding uniforms. In my council, our summer camp issues the 3" patch with segments, and these can only really be worn on one shirt. It is a matter of pride for scouts to show off how many circles of segments they've earned. The uniforms I currently own are 2 short-sleeve shirts (1 venture, 1 scout) and 1 pair of uniform pants. My family (and ME, at one point) has been the the situation of the special needs scout. My initial, gut reaction is DO NOT KICK HIM OUT. It sounds like the group egged each other on to do something... and the scout gave them the "show" they wanted. I have no doubt that "karate kid" is scared.. but maybe not of the special needs kid, but what the group will pressure him into next? kicking the special needs scout out will not accomplish much... the group of scouts will probably still fight.. the ADHD kid is not "the whole problem" maybe part of the problem... but it takes two to tango.

What is contingent staff vs. service staff??? Where would I find the medical guys? How about the Ham Radio group???

"Can ONLY be an ASM" How can I verify this... can you provide a source?? I'm not new to the orginization, only the adult/leadership side. I've been told its ok, and haven't heard anything bad back.... I want to be SURE on this either way. Thanks, Jon

I'm just about the same size. I'm a little larger than a few years back when I was an active youth memeber, and I've gotten most of my stuff off of ebay. Make sure you verify patches that were on the shirt before.... My dad (smaller) got a scout's shirt with a small tear where an arrow of light was removed. That made it unsuitable for adult wear, but still good for any youth member that could offset their arrow of light to cover the hole. Also--- beware of smoker's uniforms...discolored and smelly, often... Jon

Perhaps the boy in question could be asked to not only be clean for X months before his Eagle BOR, but also "strongly request" that he present a project / discussion on "Why Alcohol is bad for you" Jon
